2 2 APG News October 27, 2011 OPINION Keepig relatioships healthy If you could have the ideal lovig relatioship, what would that look like? For some couples, it would ivolve a lot of time together ad shared iterests, ad for others, it may iclude more space ad time spet separately. There are may ways to be a lovig parter, ad the key is discoverig what your parter eeds from you, rather tha what they are t givig to you. Ofte, lovig your parter meas puttig yourself i their place ad imagiig what would brig them happiess. Military couples face icredibly challegig stressors together. Those couples who remai resiliet ofte fid themselves with stroger relatioships whe the dust settles. However, may of the uique stressors imposed o military couples may chip away at the fabric of safety ad peace withi the relatioship. What ca you ad your parter do to help protect your relatioship from the stress of military life? Here are some ideas to erich your relatioship so it serves as a vessel of comfort for both of you: Ask your parter what he (or she) eeds. Also, you should be able to idetify what you eed ad how your eeds ca be met. If you both develop empa- Elimiate all sarcasm, ame callig, belittlig or other types of verbal ad emotioal abuse, ad make a pact ot to tolerate displays of temper. thy for each other s eeds, tha you both will be satisfied with what you ca create together i your relatioship. Elimiate all sarcasm, ame callig, belittlig or other types of verbal ad emotioal abuse, ad make a pact ot to tolerate displays of temper such as slammig objects or doors. These behaviors cause sigificat damage to the trust ad safety betwee you ad may lead to physical abuse. If you re able to say at least five positive commets to every egative commet, your relatioship will feel much more lovig ad supportive. Nurture the bod betwee you. Oe way is to foster ad keep ope, regular commuicatio about the importat thigs i your life, as well as the small daily matters. Develop a homecomig ritual upo your parter s retur from deploymet. This ritual ca serve as a lie of demarcatio a dividig poit from their beig away at war, to beig here, at peace. Ofte service members returig from deploymet eed a period of readjustmet to their old lifestyle ad familiar surroudigs. They may wat to talk but are uable to fid words to express their experieces or feeligs about what they ve bee through. They may eed time to themselves, which you should respect. Nomilitary parters also ca play a importat role i the relatioship s stress maagemet by lovigly ecouragig their military loved oe to seek help for severe post-deploymet problems. Service members should remember that their parters wat to help ad recoect with them, ad should have compassio for the stresses their parters experieced durig their time away. It s OK to share your feeligs about your deploymet experieces without sharig details about what you saw or did. I this way you ca recoect emotioally, lea o your parter for support, ad feel less isolated while protectig them from the harsh realities of what you experieced. Be alert for sigs of traumatic brai ijury or post-traumatic stress disorder. If you fid yourself uable to cope, talk to your parter about it ad seek professioal help. If you have suicidal thoughts, always seek professioal help, as you may be experiecig depressio, which resolves with proper treatmet. I the ed, our relatioships reflect the amout of eergy ad devotio we put ito them. If you give your relatioship the gifts of compassio ad empathy, regardless of what the exteral world heaps upo you, you will reap the rewards of cotetmet ad love withi your relatioship. Are you familiar with some of the risk factors for suicide, which iclude relatioship issues? Fid out more about suicide prevetio iformatio ad resources o the DCoE website. What a woderful career I have had as a result of workig here, said Lez, i a farewell to coworkers. This is a istitutio filled with people with small egos ad people with big compassio ad cocer for each other, truly watig to work together for the success of the missio, cotiued Lez. It has bee my good fortue to beefit from that atmosphere. I have leared much from everyoe I worked with ad that has eriched my scietific life as well as my persoal life. Lez, a research chemist, came to work for the U.S. Army Biomedical Laboratory, as MRICD used to be called, i November I the succeedig years, he made a idelible mark o the medical chemical defese research program through his iovative thikig, diplomacy, leadership, ad maagemet capabilities. I recogitio of his achievemets ad dedicatio to the atio, upo his retiremet Lez received the DA Superior Civilia Service Award ad the Departmet of the Army Decoratio for Exceptioal Civilia Service; the latter is the highest hoorary award that ca be give to civilias by, or o behalf of the Secretary of the Army. Dr. Lez s cotributios are immeasurable, remarked Maj. Lee Lefkowitz, who util recetly was Lez s divisio chief ad ow serves as MRICD s executive officer. He is oe of the most educated, itelliget, outstadig scietists I kow, ad he is meticulous i applyig scietific rigor to the research process. Arrivig at the lab with a backgroud i the ezyme acetylcholiesterase, a primary target of chemical warfare erve agets, Lez evetually expaded his kowledge o iducig atibodies specific for erve agets. Accordig to Dr. Joh Petrali, of MRICD, Lez s positiveess that atibodies to these chemicals could be developed ispired their team to pursue the research, ad i the early 1980s, Lez s collaborative efforts with Dr. K. W. Huter Jr. of the Uiformed Services Uiversity of the Health MRICD archive photos Dr. David Lez was always a supportive metor to studets i his lab. For may years at the MRICD he maaged the summer high school studet appretice program ad the Oak Ridge Istitute Sciece ad Egieerig iter program, which he itroduced to MRICD. Scieces led to the developmet of the first moocloal atibodies to the erve agets soma. From the early 1990s oward, Lez spet much of his career workig o a iovative prophylactic approach to protectio agaist the lethality of chemical warfare erve agets: the use of ezymes that occur aturally i the huma body to scavege the aget. These bioscavegers attach to the erve agets, prevetig their toxicity ad providig exteded protectio without causig side effects, behavioral effects, or the eed for extesive therapy. The big picture was always Lez s focus whe lookig at a problem ad how to solve it, explais istitute researcher Doald Maxwell. Dave always said, Do t work o little thigs, recalled Maxwell, Work o the big problems ad the little oes will come alog. Maxwell also described Lez as havig a kack for workig with groups of people. This kack, ad Lez s iheret diplomacy, was evidet i the developmet of the bioscaveger program. Lez, alog with coworkers at MRICD ad colleagues at other govermet ad private orgaizatios, bega explorig the use of stoichiometric bioscavegers, i which oe molecule of ezyme bids oe molecule of erve aget. The result was the developmet of a first-geeratio bioscaveger called butyrylcholiesterase, a protei that was isolated from expired huma blood. This was followed by a secod geeratio recombiat form, expressed i the milk of trasgeic goats. Both the plasma-derived ad recombiat forms of huma butyrylcholiesterase were selected for advaced developmet ad trasitioed to cliical trials. However, because the stoichiometric bioscaveger approach requires a large amout of ezyme to be effective, Lez ad his team bega explorig the developmet of catalytic bioscavegers i which the ezyme ca cotiuously destroy the erve aget. Iitially, the research was fuded predomiatly by the Departmet of Defese. The i 2006, the expertise of Lez ad his team at MRICD, as well as that of a team of collaborators at iteratioal ad academic orgaizatios, was recogized with the award of a fiveyear Ceter of Excellece grat, worth $14,400,000, from the Natioal Istitutes of Health CouterACT program. The grat to develop ovel bioscavegers cosisted of six projects ad two core fuctios. The parter orgaizatios iclude the Huma Biomolecular Research Istitute, Sa Diego; The Weizma Istitute i Israel; the Departmet of Plat, Cellular, ad Molecular Biology, The Ohio State Uiversity; The Biodesig Istitute at Arizoa State Uiversity; ad the Departmet of Chemistry, The Ohio State Uiversity. Lez s deft maagemet skills ad diplomacy i leadig this broad, highly coordiated iteratioal effort resulted i several sigificat achievemets: the developmet of a ew class of surrogate erve aget compouds, the first example of a catalytic scaveger capable of affordig protectio agaist a broad spectrum of erve agets, ad the uique expressio of recombiat proteis i plats. Lez also served as a permaet member, as well as study director, of the pyridostigmie bromide (PB) itegrated product team (IPT). The team s purpose was to orgaize research projects to support the submissio of post-marketig studies to the Food ad Drug Admiistratio i cojuctio with a New Drug Applicatio (NDA) authorizig the use of PB as a pretreatmet i cojuctio with curretly fielded therapy for poisoig by the erve aget soma. This effort over the last 3 years, said Capt. Robert Brodick, chief of MRICD s Physiology ad Immuology Brach, represets the first Good Laboratory Practices study successfully completed at MRICD, ad Dr. Lez s ivaluable experiece ad oversight of the study resulted i the retetio of PB as a drug for military use. From late 2001, i additio to his Dr. David Lez (right) discusses a molecular model of the bioscaveger cadidate huma paraoxoase 1 with a erve aget docked i the active site with co-ivestigator Dr. Douglas Cerasoli ad Col. Bria Lukey, who was the commader of MRICD i 2006 whe Lez s research team received the Ceter of Excellece grat from the Natioa; Istitute of Health. research efforts ad oversight of the NIH grat, Lez served as the cotractig officer s techical represetative o a cotract with Battelle Memorial Istitute etitled A Medical Research ad Evaluatio Facility ad Studies Supportig the Medical Chemical Defese Program. The cotract, with a curret value of approximately $36 millio, icludes 33 active research tasks, addressig studies to provide eeded data for a FDA ew drug submissio for midazolam, the developmet of sythesis strategies for makig curret ad ew oximes, the evaluatio of bioscavegers as a defese agaist ihalatio exposure to erve agets, the testig of ew treatmets of sulfur mustard burs, ad late stage developmet testig of a ew oxime. Throughout his career, Lez metored high school ad college studets ad post-doctoral fellows. He employed six Natioal Research Coucil postdoctoral fellows i his lab, icludig Dr. Douglas Cerasoli, who trasitioed to a civilia positio ad became his co-ivestigator o the NIH Couter- ACT Ceter of Excellece grat. Lez was also MRICD s coordiator for the George Washigto Uiversity Summer Sciece ad Egieerig Appretice Program, from , uder which he oversaw the placemet of more tha 130 high school studets i the istitute. Additioally, Lez iitiated MRICD s participatio i the Oak Ridge Istitute of Sciece ad Egieerig iter program ad served as the program coordiator at the istitute. Lez authored or coauthored over 90 ope literature publicatios, 150 presetatios, ad 6 patets. He is a member of umerous atioal scietific professioal societies to iclude the America Chemical Society (ACS), Sigma Xi (The Scietific Research Society), ad the America Society of Biological Chemistry ad Molecular Biology. Additioally, Lez served o the editorial boards of the jourals Biochemical Pharmacology, Toxicology ad Applied Pharmacology, Aalytical Biochemistry, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, Life Scieces, Joural of Agricultural ad Food Chemistry, Archives of Toxicology, ad Joural of Pharmacology ad Experimetal Therapeutics. While she was servig as lieuteat coloel for the U.S. Army Medical Research Istitute for Chemical Defese, ad previously, the Army Public Health Commad. Durig this time, she also voluteered at the APG Vet Cliic for about for about six years. I would take leave to voluteer at the cliic so that I could keep my skills curret ad sped time with the aimals, Bossoe said. I am glad that it is ow my primary job. I always wated to be able work with aimals every day. Eve i Bossoe s spare time, she is surrouded by aimals. She likes to relax by spedig time with her four horses, three cats, two birds ad dog her costat compaios at her farm i Plyseville, Md. Cliic services With Bossoe o staff, APG s vet cliic is ope for appoitmets for the first time (cosistetly) sice Jauary. This is a boo for patros sice, accordig to Bossoe, cliic prices for vacciatios ad other services are ofte cheaper tha off post facilities. Beig able to use the vet cliic is a beefit, like the usig the commissary, she said. For istace, we oly charge $25 to microchip a pet which icludes registratio with the compay. Off post, that service ca cost $65 or more. Microchippig a pet is madatory for APG residets, ad if doe o post, the family iformatio o the microchip is updated aually, free of charge, ad for the life of the pet, so whe a pet ower chages their address, there is o additioal cost to update the system. They just eed to otify the compay, Home Agai, of their address chage. Bossoe said aother requiremet for pet owers livig o post is that pets rabies vaccies must be updated every three years ad pets must wear a curret APG rabies tag at all times. Also, pets are to be kept o leash, uder the ower s supervisio ad i cotrol at all times whe outside of the home or yard. For questios about o-post pet regulatios, residets should cotact Picere Housig at or obtai a copy of the Picere Residet Resposibility Guide for the full list of regulatios. Bossoe said that pet owers have a resposibility to take get their pets checked up oce a year ad to stay curret with all shots. Some vacciatios eed to be give aually, some every three years. This is a big area for pets as well as people to cotract Lyme disease, she said. Ad if the pet speds a sigificat amout of time outdoors, i the woods, they eed to get a Lyme disease shot more frequetly. I additio to givig vacciatios, the cliic sells heartworm ad flea ad tick prevetio. I order to purchase the medicatio, pet owers must take their pet i for their aual checkup. Pet owers should also keep i mid that some services are ot offered at the cliic, to iclude surgeries, detal work ad give emergecy care. We have iformatio ad refer people to local vets that do these services. For more iformatio o services or to make a appoitmet, call The cliic is located o APG North across the street from Kirk U.S. Army Health Cliic at Bldg o Oakigto Street. There are three rules for studets at Carlisle (the Army War College), Jussel stressed. Oe -- theater plaig requires logistics. Two -- persoalities matter. Ad three -- words have meaig. He used examples from Gettysburg to illustrate. Begiig o the oe-hour bus ride, Jussel talked about the ru up to the battle ad the politics occurrig at the helm of leadership. Ge. George Meade had bee i commad of the Army of the Potomac for oly a few days. Lee, give his past successes, most recetly i the battle of Chacellorsville, was thought to be ivicible. Some called it the imperial hubris of Geeral Lee, Jussel said. He passed aroud pieces of ammuitio to demostrate the techology employed 148 years ago, ad talked about the types of ijuries each could iflict. The caister rouds, while heavier, could t really stop a regimet, Jussel said. But they did raise the leadership questio of, How do you lead me where they would t ormally go? To may of them, hoor was more importat tha life, he added. At every stop, Jussel ivoked isight beyod a typical battlefield tour, leadig the APG Cohort through the battlefield ad framig it i strategic leadership, decisio makig ad plaig. He really brought the battlefield to life, said Todd Roseberger, U.S. Army Research Laboratory. This is the first time the APG Cohort has worked with the Army War College, the ceter of excellece for strategic leadership ad the framework for Army leaders to act ad thik strategically, said Paul debeedictis, Cohort program coordiator. Our itet is to get subjectmatter experts for each of the subjects i the Cohort curriculum. Army War College educators provided their kee isight for two Cohort sessios (Oct. 18 ad 19). The first was the Gettysburg tour. The secod was whe War College faculty came to APG to teach strategic leadership. Army Col. Stephe C. Sobotta, Director, Public Admiistratio Studies, Departmet of Commad, Leadership ad Maagemet, ad U.S. Navy Cmdr. Traci Keega, also from the Departmet of Commad, Leadership ad Maagemet, took the Cohort o a examiatio of themselves, ad placed them i a strategic thikig framework. Begiig with self awareess that icludes egocetric tedecies, assumptios ad biases, the Army War College educators delivered a eight-week course of istructio i oe day. They facilitated a awareess of cultural iflueces, a cosideratio of ethics ad values, ad a opeess to both discourse ad reflectio. Accordig to Cythia Dewey, program maager, Wester Maagemet Developmet Ceter, Office of Persoel Maagemet, the APG Cohort program is developig ito a viable leadership traiig model. Three years ago there was a outreach from APG to say we eeded to develop some sort of leadership program that would help break dow some of the silos ad build a sese of commuity withi Aberdee, especially with the BRAC issues that were loomig at that poit i time. Dewey said. [APG] was takig i a lot of folks ad is so large that you have orgaizatios doig differet thigs ad ot ecessarily always collaboratig with each other. I took the program over i the secod year, but from what I uderstad, Mr. Joe Weiad, techical director for Edgewood Chemical Biological Ceter, approached the Office of Persoel Maagemet, ad from that they started havig discussios about creatig a program [for] leadership level at a higher level. It s based o the Actio Sciece - Actio Learig cocept that people will do, step back, reflect, thik, ad do. What you hear all the time is leaders do t have time to step back ad really thik about thigs. The reality is that they have to take the time to do that, Dewey said. She explaied the eed for strategic thikig is critical. Folks have gotte to where they are today based o the thigs that they ve doe tactically ad operatioally. What we eeded to do is move their thikig up more to strategic level, to have visio ad be able to commuicate that, ad to grow this group of future leaders to where they eed to be for the Army. Aberdee is uique, Dewey cotiued. There are a lot of Army orgaizatios ad a lot of other federal orgaizatios that have leadership traiig, but ot ecessarily of the scope which Aberdee has take this. The cocept that was built here at Aberdee, based off the leadership iput, is uique to what we re doig across govermet. We have agecies just dow the road sayig, What s goig o at Aberdee? Tell me more about that. They re likig the cocept, she said. This is a great foudatioal piece, Dewey cotiued. Whe it was desiged they wated to focus it o How do I look at myself ad have self awareess as a leader? Hoestly, at the strategic level, you have to be able to look at yourself i order to look out. So we started with that cocept, the we moved them to the teamig ad to the orgaizatio, ad the big picture thikig. This is the phase these people are goig through at this poit, she said, oddig at the third-year APG Cohort. APG Cohort participats (Orgaizatios ): Nickee Abbott (JPEO Itegratio), Dave Amaral (ARL), Adrea Britto (ATEC), Erest Chi (ARL), Deborah Crate Dawso (CMA), Carl Eisser (AMSAA), Gary Goldsmith (JPEO-CBD), Frak Hoffma (CMA), Christopher Hoppel (ARL), Georgia Magioe (DTC), Nick Mastromaolis (ATEC), Mike McCarthy (AMSAA), Todd Morris (RDECOM), Mark Mossa (AMSAA), Susa Nappi (CECOM), Bria O Doell (CMA), Jeifer Reed (CECOM), Marc Rose (CECOM), Todd Roseberger (ARL), Thomas Rosso (ECBC), Joh Ruyeo (ARL), Pamela Savage-Kepshield (ARL), Waye Schooveld (CERDEC), Garrett Shoemaker (CECOM), Steve Slae (CER- DEC), Douglas Soliva (CECOM), Debra Thedford (ECBC), Eugee Vickers, Sr. (ECBC), ad Christopher Wilcox (AEC). Participatig Alumi: (Gettysburg tour) Robert Durgi, Bill Klei, Colee Dzik, Mitchell Mayer, Joel Selzer, Cathy Pritts, Rady Laye, Do Matts ad Michael Zoltoski. (Classroom) -- Do Matts, Patrick Thompso, Jeff Harris, Cathy Pritts, Lawrece Burto ad Ricky Grote. Burger Kig reopes i November with hi-tech upgrades Cotiued from Page 1 accets ad other artistic iterpretatios of the compay s grill-cetric brad. The materials used are higher quality. For istace, we used real stucco brick for the walls ad the ceramic tile for the floors that looks like rustic wood ad cocrete, ad Coria for the coutertops, said Nick Patazis, a private cotractor who is workig o the reovatios. This gives the restaurat a more adult, upscale feel. This shift i desig focuses o the food itself, promotig that Burger Kig uses a flame broiler, Turer said. Burger Kig has moved away from usig the Kig as a mascot. They are cocetratig more o the product istead of the image. I fact, the 20/20 restaurat features the revolutioary Duke Flexible Batch Broiler, which maximizes cookig flexibility ad facilitates a broader meu selectio while reducig operatioal ad eergy costs. Other kitche improvemets iclude the Kitche Mider, which moitors time ad temperature i the cabiets ad otifies staff ad maagers whe to prepare more food ad discard older products. This is equipmet is really importat esures that customers receive fresh food, said Kahaliah McRaey, seior maager. Turer said that other equipmet has bee replaced or added to the kitche area, like the additio of a soft serve ice cream machie ad a real fruit smoothie maker. These are excitig additios ad I believe they will be big sellers, Turer said. Other ew food items iclude ew healthier optios like oatmeal with fruit ad made to order salads. Addig aother level of freshess, BK will ow cut their vegetables for salads ad sadwiches, as opposed to gettig prepackaged vegetables, accordig to McRaey. Turer said 10 ew employees have bee hired i additio to the five employees that worked at the restaurat before reovatios. Turer, who recetly trasferred to the APG Burger Kig from a AAFES Burger Kig i Japa, said that more employees will work the luch shift to speed up service. The ew heated sadwich board area will assist by allowig maagemet to delegate employees to either the diig room or drive thru area. Our goal is to have customers i ad out of the drive through i two miutes ad 30 secods, ad i our diig room be served i three miutes. That is from the time they stad i lie to the time they get their food, Turer said. Turer added that he ecourages feedback from customers. The Burger Kig is tetatively set to ope the secod week of November. For more iformatio, call Turer at
