A sigificat portio of its grat programmig icludes the career developmet of youg scietists. The existig Postdoctoral Erichmet Program Award (PDEP) was established to address the cotiuig lag i the advacemet of uderrepreseted scietists ad to positio awardees to be more competitive i their pursuit of securig academic ad research positios. Erichmet support for uderrepreseted postdocs has prove to be effective i their career progressio. More tha 49 awards have bee made to early career scietists sice the establishmet of the Postdoctoral Erichmet Program Award i To date, five PDEP awardees have secured faculty positios. Despite several decades of federally supported programs, racial ad ethic miority Americas cotiue to be uderrepreseted amog Ph.D. recipiets ad i the sciece ad egieerig workforce. I biomedical scieces, graduate erollmet is 68% white, 12.9% Asia, 5.4% black, 5.9% Hispaic, 7% ukow ad less tha.5% America Idia. Studets with strog SAT scores, high grades ad success i high school hoors math ad sciece courses ofte leave the udergraduate college STEM pipelie, ad the loss is disproportioately amog uderrepreseted studets. BWF seeks to support those uderrepreseted studets who go o to become graduate doctoral studets i the biomedical scieces ad thus icrease the diversity of idividuals completig degree requiremets ad eterig postdoctoral programs. Graduate Diversity Erichmet Program (GDEP) To address access to erichmet opportuities ad supportig resources, the Burroughs Wellcome Fud is pilotig the Graduate Diversity Erichmet Program i BWF is committed to fudig the ext geeratio of scietists ad researchers ad seeks to support Ph.D. studets i icreasig the diversity i sciece. The primary goal of the Graduate Diversity Erichmet Program (GDEP) is to ehace the graduate studet experiece ad provide early exposure to various professioal eviromets ad etworks for which future research ad/or professoriate opportuities might maifest. Fuds will support the followig: 1. Activities for the graduate studet to travel ad participate i or preset at cofereces, workshops, courses ad traiig. 2. Costs associated with the purchase of equipmet, materials ad supplies related to their research, presetatio, short course erollmet, workshops ad traiig. 3. Participatio i peer etwork system of diversity ad/ or uderrepreseted graduate studets. REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS 3

4 GRADUATE DIVERSITY ENRICHMENT AWARD The Graduate Diversity Erichmet Program (GDEP) provides a total of $5,000 over two years to provide uderrepreseted Ph.D. studets (erolled i NC Istitutios of Higher Educatio) with opportuities for greater sciece ad research erichmet experieces. Te awards will be grated for the period. Cotiuatio of the GDEP award will be based o the impact ad success of the iitial te awards. The program provides a total of $5,000 ($2,500 per year) over two years. The GDEP award caot be used to support idirect costs. (Refer to Terms of Grat for iformatio o idirect costs ad use of fuds.) ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Applicats for the Graduate Diversity Erichmet Program Award: Must be a graduate Ph.D. studet erolled at a North Carolia Istitutio of Higher Educatio (public or private) ad withi their 2d to 5th year of studies at the time of applicatio. Must be post prelimiary/qualifyig exams at the time of applicatio Must be omiated by a graduate advisor at the omiatig istitutio. Applicatios must be approved by a official resposible for sposored programs (geerally from the grats office, office of research, or office of sposored programs) at the degree-gratig istitutio. Must be uderrepreseted miority (i.e. America Idia or Alaska Native, Black or Africa America, Hispaic, or Native Hawaiia or other Pacific Islader) Must be citize of the Uited States or Caada (at the time of applicatio) Must be full time graduate studet ad actively coductig biomedical ad medical research Idividual uderrepreseted miority graduate studets coductig biomedical or related medical research are eligible to apply. The program targets Ph.D. cadidates who are coductig biomedical or related medical sciece research. IMPORTANT NOTES The GDEP award ca oly be made to degree-gratig istitutios i North Carolia. Istitutioal Iteral Reveue Service determiatio letter of o-profit status may be requested by BWF staff if said letter is ot o file i our database. A advisor s support letter is required for GDEP. Advisors of GDEP awardees may be requested to atted ad/or participate i webiars ad workshops related to diversity. The advisor must explicitly state how the grat award would support erichmet for the graduate studet. SELECTION PROCESS Selectio of award recipiets will be made by a admiistrative ad scietific advisory committee with fial approval by the Burroughs Wellcome Fud Board of Directors. 5 INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO PREPARE AND SUBMIT A COMPLETE PROPOSAL Applicatio Process Iterested cadidates who meet the eligibility criteria will eed to submit oe olie proposal through BWF s Iteret Grat Applicatio Module (IGAM) by May 30th, 2017 at 4:00 pm ET. The proposal submissio site or grat applicatio portal will be available by March 30th, The Proposal icludes: (see Proposal Elemets for descriptios of each item below) Applicat Iformatio Persoal statemet ad a CV from the applicat Project Pla Letter of omiatio by a graduate advisor Budget (template provided) Sigature Page (template provided) All commuicatios will be made through . Proposal Elemets A complete proposal cosists of fields submitted through the olie IGAM applicatio plus requested attachmets uploaded as PDFs ito the grat applicatio system. I additio, a omiatio letter is requested from the doctoral studet s advisor. The detailed compoets of the complete proposal are show below. Note that it is the resposibility of the applicat to esure that the omiatio letter is submitted by the deadlie due date. A applicatio will ot be cosidered complete without the letter from the advisor. The pla should describe: Overview of plaed expeditures related to coferece attedace, short courses, preparatio of presetatio materials, workshop attedace ad ay other professioal activities i support of stated goals. Ay formal traiig activities related to career goals Leveragig Capacity: How the award grat might be leveraged with other activities ad support provided by the degree-seekig istitutio. Budget ad Budget Justificatio (oe page for the budget ad oe page for the budget justificatio): The budget should cover expeditures plaed for each year of the two-year award. The justificatio should also iclude ay purchases of materials ad/or equipmet. It is the resposibility of the cadidate to esure the letter is submitted o time. Applicat istructios to obtai cofidetial advisor letter: 1. Sed a to your advisor from withi the olie system (Recommeder tab) requestig this letter. Note that although this tab says recommeder, the letter is from your advisor. No additioal letters from other supporters are required. 2. To sed the , click o the Recommeders tab ad eter the advisor s ame ad . Be certai the sed check box is clicked ext to the ame. Click sed. 3. A will pop-up with stadard laguage. It is recommeded by BWF that you chage the laguage to reflect that this is ot a stadard recommedatio letter, but rather a letter of omiatio from the advisor. Oce the advisor logs ito the system, they will see istructios o what to iclude i the letter. 4. 7 7. Letters are cofidetial ad should ot be viewed by the applicat. You will oly be able to see that the letter has or has ot bee uploaded to your applicatio. Note: Advisor letters set separately or after the applicatio due date will ot be accepted. Advisor istructios to submit cofidetial letter: Complete your letter offlie usig ay stadard wordprocessig software. The letter should describe the impact that the GDEP award would have o the studet ad the iteded support to the applicat i determiig appropriate erichmet activities ad evets. The advisor must iclude how the studet s goals will be supported. The letter is limited to two pages. Please iclude the letter o official uiversity letterhead, icludig a sigature block. Covert the documet to a PDF file. Save the letter as a.pdf o your system. Retur to the applicat s request ad click o the web lik which will take you to a log-i page o BWF s grat applicatio system. Log i usig the same address at which you received the request from the applicat. Retai this log-i iformatio i the evet you wish to reload a revised letter at a later date. Select the Title: Letters from Advisor from the drop dow list provided o the page. Browse to select the letter from your system which will populate the File Name field. Click the Upload butto. Click the Fiished butto. View the ackowledgmet thakig you for your submissio. If you have problems with the lik, copy ad paste the etire lik ito your web browser. Be certai you are eterig the correct address to log i to the site. Oce your letter has bee uploaded, the applicat will be able to see whether or ot your letter has bee submitted, but caot view the cotet of the letter. A applicatio CANNOT BE SUBMITTED util the advisor letter has bee uploaded ad attached to the applicatio by the grat deadlie. Submissio Process Upload the requested files o the Attachmets tab of the olie applicatio. Click the Review Your Applicatio o the Attachmets tab to see if ay errors are idetified i your applicatio. All iformatio must be provided before the SUBMIT butto is available. Click the SUBMIT butto to trasmit the applicatio. A automated message will cofirm that the applicatio was successfully submitted. Proposals will ot be accepted after 4 pm EDT o May 30, The olie applicatio system shuts dow automatically at the deadlie ad the SUBMIT butto will o loger be available. Pla to submit your applicatio well i advace of the grat deadlie to allow adequate time to troubleshoot ay issues. NO EXCEPTIONS OR EXTENSIONS WILL BE GRANTED. After the deadlie, applicats with icomplete proposals ad those ot adherig to istructios will be disqualified without prior otice. 8 TERMS OF THE GRANT/USE OF FUNDS Awards are made to the degree-gratig istitutios o behalf of the award recipiets. The Graduate Diversity Erichmet Program (GDEP) award provides a total of $5,000 over two years as outlied below to support the developmet of a GDEP awardee at a North Carolia degreegratig istitutio. Idividual GDEP awardees coductig biomedical or medical research are eligible to apply. The istitutios are resposible for disbursig the fuds ad for maitaiig adequate supportig records ad receipts of expeditures. Idirect costs may ot be charged agaist the awards. Award recipiets must provide BWF with a aual progress report detailig their progress. Istitutios must provide a aual fiacial report. Both reports must be submitted (o forms that will be provided) by November of each award year. Cotiued fudig will deped o both the timely submissio of these reports ad their favorable review by BWF ad its program advisory committee. Award recipiets may obtai fuds from other sources for research i the same or similar areas as coducted uder these grats, so log as there is ot coflict with meetig the terms of BWF s award. The award is uder the cotrol of the award recipiet ad may be used flexibly for developmet activities as outlied below. BWF expects the appropriate federal, state ad local guidelies with regard to scietific miscoduct are i place ad eforced at all istitutios with which BWF awardees are affiliated. Awardees should share scietific fidigs i a timely maer via the stadard meas of scietific commuicatio, icludig publicatios ad /or presetatios i scietific forums. No. BWF requires that all applicatios for this program be submitted electroically by the applicatio deadlie. Paper applicatios will ot be accepted. Ca I chage my applicatio oce submitted? No. Oce your applicatio has bee submitted, it caot be chaged. To whom should my advisor letter be addressed? The letter from the advisor should be addressed to the GDEP Review ad Selectio Committee. The letter must be submitted by the metor prior to the applicatio deadlie. Faxed letters will ot be accepted. Are there format requiremets for the project pla? Yes. Use stadard 11- or 12- poit type for the text. Text must be sigle-spaced with oe-ich or larger margis o all sides. The fot-size requiremet is strictly eforced. What is the Sigature Page Form? How do I submit it? The Sigature Page Form provides sigature lies for the applicat, the advisor, ad the istitutio s sigig official at the degree-gratig istitutio.
