Not only did the cadre at the U.S. Air Force Pararescue School here employ a dynamic exercise regimen for students here Jan. 4 through Saturday, the 3rd Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment, Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division, created the fog of war for them. The 10-day final evaluation phase was designed to test students comprehensively before they earn the right to wear the maroon beret of the PJs, as they re called, at the end of this month, according to 351st Battlefield Airman Training Squadron (PJ School) commander, Lt. Col. Joe Lopez. This is a sequence of missions that we provide these students full mission profiles and we drop several missions per day on them through the course of 10 days, Lopez A mass casualty scenario the morning of Jan. 6 demonstrated the rigor and complexity of a full mission profile, he explained. Incorporating more than 100 Airmen and Soldiers, the scenario included downed helicopters and a convoying response force that came under attack while trying to help. At that point, the PJ and Combat Rescue Officer students were inserted via UH- 60 Black Hawks from the 3rd Bn., 501st Aviation Regt. Students have been given the mission, have planned for the mission and are preparing to arrive on station to render aide to the folks that need it, Lopez said, as small arms fire rang out and Black Hawk rotors began slashing through the sky above the training area. The students were inserted on a hilltop while taking fire, and managed to triage, treat and transport all wounded over the course of the inside this issue 1st AD Sust. As the Black Hawks returned to the forward operating base, Black Hawk pilot and Albuquerque native Army Capt. Chloe Flores said the exercise was a great opportunity for the Army contingent. Things went really well today. This (joint training) provides a good opportunity for us to train with actual Pararescuemen, the dynamic mission set that they face really gives us an opportunity to practice how to react to that mission set and support them, said Flores, commander of Company C, 3rd Bn., 501st Aviation Regt. It was very hasty. We had to move really fast, and aircraft had to split up to support forces (under attack) on the ground. In support of ongoing efforts to make command posts more resilient, mobile and survivable, the Army is pushing to get secure Wi-Fi to the field to help gain an operational edge against potential peer and near-peer adversaries. Following the relocation of a command post on the battlefield, referred to as a jump, secure Wi-Fi enables critical network and mission command systems to come up online in minutes, versus waiting many hours for Soldiers to wire a command post for network connectivity. The 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division successfully piloted this secure Wi-Fi capability for a second time during decisive action training at the National Training Center, or NTC, on Fort Irwin, California, which concluded in November During this realistic combat training event, the unit fought against a capable adversary and used secure Wi-Fi extensively throughout its brigade command post to speed maneuver, provide continuity of mission command and remain a step ahead of enemy forces. The key benefit provided by secure Wi-Fi is the velocity that it brings to (the set up of) my mission command systems, said Col. Michael Adams, commander of 1st ABCT, 3rd ID. Near-peer adversaries are much more capable than enemies we trained against previously. In a decisive action training environment, (armed with secure Wi-Fi), we are much faster and more mobile, and that equates to survivability. The unit successfully used secure Wi-Fi to provide untethered network connections to enable secure wireless voice, video and data exchange on more than 60 unclassified computers and 100 classified computers and mission command systems, such as Command Post of the Future. At any given point during this event, there were at least 60 active secure Wi-Fi users inside the brigade main command post, known as the Tactical Operations Center, or TOC, Adams The only wired systems that were not allowed to be wired were those Army mission command systems that were waiting to receive Army authority to operate on secure Wi-Fi. The win was that once the Wi-Fi system was up, I could get everyone up at the same time across the entire staff, Adams It s a colloquialism; many hands make light work, but it s also an ability to fuse the actions of the entire brigade combat team across all warfighting functions. Similar to the Wi-Fi used in most homes, the Army s National Security Agency-accredited solution provides wireless network connectivity inside the command post, with added layers of security. Secure Wi-Fi is managed by the Army s Product Manager Network Modernization, assigned to Project Manager Tactical Network. Without wireless capability, establishing a network in a typical brigade command post takes many hours and See WI-FI Page 2A

Every time a command post is jumped, the cables have to be cut, laid out, configured and plugged in, and often replaced because of damage and continual wear and tear. Protective flooring has to be laid over the wiring, making it difficult to troubleshoot network issues. Secure Wi-Fi can eliminate these hurdles since its small remote access points provide quick and easy network connections throughout the entire command post within minutes. Secure Wi-Fi also speeds our mission military decision making process, Adams If I know that something is going on and I can get ahead of the enemy commander, then The Fort Bliss Bugle is an unofficial publication authorized by AR and printed each Thursday in the interest of the Fort Bliss and El Paso, Texas, communities. Steve Murphy I can set the conditions so that he is fighting from a position of disadvantage. With secure Wi-Fi, I gain an exponential increase in velocity, and the deeper the Wi-Fi capabilities in the formation, the more we are able to do. To outmaneuver its near-peer adversary at the NTC, 1st ABCT, 3rd ID had to jump its brigade TOC several times during the realistic field exercise. These massive relocation efforts in the harsh terrain of the Mojave Desert were sometimes conducted in the dark of night, and because of mock threats of chemical and biological warfare, Soldiers were required to wear protective gear, making it more difficult to set up and wire a large brigade command post. Secure Wi-Fi made it much easier and faster to set up the network (from hours to minutes) under these extreme conditions, and users were able to connect to the network and use their mission command systems earlier and stay connected longer prior to the next jump, Adams Without Wi-Fi, users were often waiting (depending on position or rank) for wire to be run, said Maj. Michael Donegan, 1st ABCT, 3rd ID communications officer (S6). This proves wildly inefficient, as everyone on a TOC floor has an immediate and uniquely important job to accomplish. The ability to rapidly collaborate in planning is critical in order to defeat a near-peer threat. With the introduction of Wi-Fi, you don t have to choose or prioritize which users get access first. Cranial helmets are sometimes required when an infant s head is squeezed during the birth process. Although it is a medical diagnosis, Tricare will only cover the expensive helmets if there is surgery involved (a very small percentage of cases). Believing that no Soldier and family should have to make a decision as to pay their bills or take care of their baby, AER approved cranial helmets as a specific category of assistance. Michael Williamson relinquished responsibility of 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division to Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Oliver at the brigade s headquarters here Jan. 11. Williamson will retire May 1 after 28 years of honorable service to the Army. Starting as a cavalry scout and retiring as a brigade combat team command sergeant major, Williamson did not expect his life to take the path it did. He is pleased he fulfilled his childhood dream of being a Soldier, he I have never wanted to be anything but a Soldier since I was a small boy, and I have been lucky enough to do just that for almost three decades, Williamson His years of service have not only impacted Williamson s own life, but also the many Soldiers he has led throughout his career. He and his bride, Tonna, have faithfully served the Soldiers of the brigade as mentors, friends and sounding boards, said Maj. Claude E. Hoffman, chaplain, 3rd BCT, 1st AD. Our lives are much richer today by the journey alongside these great Americans. Mike Williamson was the backbone, the voice of reason and, on occasion, the iron fist that enforced standards throughout this brigade, said Col. Lee Magee, commander, 3rd BCT, 1st AD. As the senior enlisted advisor for the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team and my right-hand man, I cannot thank him enough for the counsel, wisdom and experience. Command sergeant major definitely doesn t look at Soldiers as a number, said Pfc. Mitchell Duncan, the command sergeant major s driver. He s very hands on with his people, and I appreciate that. Before Williamson s change of responsibility ceremony, he addressed the formation saying, I don t have anything bad to say over the last two years since I ve been here. What I can say is that you have my deepest appreciation and admiration for the work you put into this formation no matter what the mission was. You are what makes the brigade go, and I ll miss you. Williamson also gives credit to his spouse, Tonna, who is an essential part of his life. She is well known throughout the brigade and the installation and received the Commander s Award for Public Service before the ceremony. Cody Chester was not always worthy to wear the rank of staff sergeant. However, on Jan. 11, he earned the traditional promotion. Chester, an American bulldog, is the mascot for 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. He needed to make an improvement in behavior and physical fitness before his leaders would consider him for promotion. It s been a tradition for the brigade (command sergeant major), once they leave, to promote Sgt. Chester to the next rank, said Staff Sgt. Cody Chester Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Williamson, the brigade s outgoing senior enlisted adviser. Starting out, Chester had some difficulties a couple years ago. He was a specialist and then finally made sergeant. We had to get him trimmed down. He actually earned the next rank after passing his (physical training) test, which was the division run. Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Williamson, left, outgoing senior enlisted adviser for 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, promotes Sgt. Cody Chester, the brigade s mascot, to staff sergeant at the brigade headquarters here Jan. 11. Pfc. Mitchell Duncan, center, the brigade command sergeant major s driver, has trained Chester for the last four months and makes sure Chester sits still. His official dog handler, Pfc. Mitchell Duncan, the brigade command sergeant major s driver, had a difficult feat ahead of him when first taking on the mission as Chester s trainer. When I took him over, he was unruly, Duncan He was biting, running around and pulling people. When I took him over, I focused all my energy on training him and making him disciplined. Duncan trained Chester using Vienna sausages and now he loves them. I have to put a bunch of them in my pocket and wait until it s soaking wet, Duncan Then, I just point to (the place we re running) and run (with Chester). This may or may not be the reason Chester was able to pass his Army Physical Fitness Test, hinted Duncan. Chester is unique because he is the only canine who is a mascot on the property books in the entire Army, Duncan As a mascot, he doesn t only attend all official functions, he also participates in battalion safety briefs and makes appearances at behavioral health to bring patients a smile, Duncan Chester represents the Bulldog Soldiers tenacity and resilience, Duncan Now, Chester will have even more responsibilities as the brigade s newest staff sergeant. As Williamson departs 3rd BCT, he has no doubt Chester will fulfill those responsibilities. He s come a long way, Williamson Photos by Staff Sgt. Felicia Jagdatt / 3rd BCT, 1st AD Public Affairs

4 4A January 18, 2018 FORT BLISS BUGLE 1st AD Sust. Bde. returns home, uncases colors By Sgt. Christopher Schmiett 1st AD Sust. Bde. Public Affairs Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion; the 142nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, and the 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade uncased their colors during a triple uncasing ceremony at the 1st AD headquarters building on Fort Bliss Dec. 8, The ceremony marked the official return for the sustainment brigade to Fort Bliss after a six-month deployment to Afghanistan in support of Resolute Support and Operation Freedom s Sentinel. For all the Muleskinners here, it s my honor to serve with and lead you, said Col. Michael Lalor, commander of the 1st AD Sust. Bde. The sun truly never sets on this great unit. The 1st AD Sust. Bde. oversaw all logistical operations throughout Afghanistan, including coordination of water, food, fuel, air operations and supplies across the Combined Joint Operation Area- Afghanistan. Logistics is a team sport. It s a contact sport. It s rarely pretty but it s the foundation for all missions. It s the bedrock of operations, and it s what we do every day, Lalor The brigade was deployed from May to November During the ceremony, Lalor had a few comments for the Soldiers who served with him while deployed. During this deployment, you nailed it, Lalor You brought an aggressive, problem-solving tenacity to a daunting distribution fight. I cannot say enough of how proud I am of this group and all we have accomplished as a team. Your accomplishments were tremendous. From our advising teams in Kabul, to our sustainers across the country at 15 different outposts, and all those who enabled an increase in force strength as part of the new U.S. policy in South Asia, you made the engine go. Lalor explained that this was the second tour to Afghanistan for the brigade in 18 months, and the third time in four years. Sgt. Christopher Schmiett / 1st AD Sust. Bde. Public Affairs Col. Michael Lalor, left, and Command Sgt. Maj. Sean Howard, right, the command team for the 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade, render honors after uncasing their colors during a ceremony at the 1st AD headquarters building on Fort Bliss Dec. 8, Lalor said that upon their return, the entire brigade was on Fort Bliss for the first time in two and a half years only for 20 days before the 47th Composite Transportation Company, 142nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 1st AD Sust. Bde., deployed to Poland in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve. To our families on the home front, who always sacrifice so much for us and our Soldiers, thank you for what you did during this deployment, for what you always do, keeping our unit strong, Lalor Those working in the theater of operation felt and saw the Soldiers hard work during this deployment. You brought an aggressive, problem-solving tenacity to a daunting distribution fight. I cannot say enough of how proud I am of this group and all we have accomplished as a team. Your accomplishments were tremendous. >> Col. Michael Lalor We are extremely proud of all the work that the Soldiers put in everyday in Afghanistan, said Maj. Jimmy Chang, the executive officer of the 1st AD Sust. Bde. They should know that the 1st AD Sust. Bde. had a true impact across all of Afghanistan. They might have not seen it or felt it in within their foxhole, but we at the brigade-level and higher echelons know the hard work our Soldiers did, so we are proud. I know I am proud of them, Col. Lalor is proud of them (and) I know Fort Bliss is proud of them as well. They accomplished a lot in a small period of time, so they should be proud. I am proud of their work and all their dedication and all the hours they put in every single day. As this chapter ends for the sustainment brigade, another one is soon to begin. I m not sure what the future will hold, and whatever it is, is mildly interesting to me, Lalor No matter what the task in front of us, we will attack it and demonstrate the disciplined, lethal and flexible unit that we truly are, supported at our core by strong Soldiers and families. Now that the colors have been uncased, the Soldiers of the sustainment brigade are ready to sustain the 1st AD, subordinate units and Fort Bliss.

6 6A January 18, 2018 FORT BLISS BUGLE Top Notch builds relationships, leaders By Staff Sgt. Johnathan Hoover 11th ADA Bde. Public Affairs AL UDEID AIR BASE, Qatar The Top Notch 11th Air Defense Artillery Imperial Brigade is spread throughout five geographical locations, thousands of miles apart, and that presents a unique challenge to cohesion and communication. In an effort to improve cohesion, relationships and provide professional development to the field-grade officers, organizers invited all majors throughout Top Notch to take part in a Majors Forum. I think it was a great opportunity to bring together the air defense, specifically the fieldgrade officers, to the Top Notch brigade headquarters so they can see for themselves how the brigade supports them and how important their mission is to the overall strategic mission here in theater, said Col. Issac Gipson, commander of Top Notch. According to Maj. Peter Lawall, the operations officer in charge of Top Notch, the intent had a dual purpose: to create an opportunity for information and knowledge sharing and to provide the ability to meet with their counterparts. It s a challenge for us to personally know each other, as well as professionally know each other, through the work we do together, Lawall Col. Gipson has always had the intent that it s not just about operational processes or the mechanical processes of production, it s about the intangible processes of building a team that has refined the fundamental relationships which make an organization more than the sum of its parts. Organizers realized the intent through the Deputy Commanding Officer of Top Notch Maj. Matthew Inglis s lens of building an event that supports the commander s intent. Although maybe not new to the Army as a whole, this was the first Majors Forum conducted by Top Notch. This was the first time that a brigade has provided the forum, space and time to bring together field-grade officers across the formation, said Maj. Catalina Rosales, executive officer of 1st Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, Staff Sgt. Johnathan Hoover / 11th ADA Bde. Public Affairs Majors throughout the Top Notch 11th Air Defense Artillery Imperial Brigade conduct an open discussion with Col. Issac Gipson, center, commander of Top Notch, during a Majors Forum at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, Dec. 29, Organizers designed the forum to build cohesion, establish relationships and provide professional development to the field-grade officers. from Fort Hood, Texas. This forum came about as an opportunity to build not just a planning event, but an intangible event which supports building a team and not just a collection of individuals, Lawall I think it s important to bring everyone together so they can understand that we do truly appreciate their efforts on what they do on a day-to-day basis, Gipson Organizers changed the timeline for the events the brigade had planned due to the unique opportunity for valuable conversation in some of the higher priority activities, Lawall The discussion, information sharing and relationship building were truly invaluable, Rosales This opportunity to network and build personal and professional relationships is a combat multiplier in support of the organization s mission readiness. Building relationships and not just building processes are important, Lawall This provided the opportunity to build those relationships while we worked on refining our plans and refining our coordinated actions. In this particular iteration, the field grades worked on the analysis of emerging changes to operational plans in the area of responsibility. Because the movement and flow of forces is fluid and ever-changing, operational plans should be updated on a periodic basis. Doing forums such as these in tandem with the changes will maintain the relevance and operationalization of theater operation plans, Rosales The event also provided insight to planning, to include smaller things people sometimes discount. It provided invaluable insight, for us at brigade, into things we might have overlooked in coordinating and enabling those subordinate unit plans, Lawall All of us came away from this with a better understanding of our individual roles within a greater plan, but we also came away with a better understanding of the individuals who play important roles in the realization and development of the plan, Lawall See TOP NOTCH Page 10A
