POW/MIA Recognition Day Post commemorates national day at Memorial Circle Friday By Wendy Brown Fort Bliss Bugle Editor U.S. military and civilian personnel who travel to remote parts of the world accounting for our nation s missing service members work under conditions that have broken their bones, given them diseases and tested their endurance levels. They don t complain though. We all knew why we were there, said Belinda Mollard, who worked with the former Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command for two years, as she spoke at the 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony at Memorial Circle Friday. We understood the importance of our mission and the promise made to our Soldiers, said Mollard, who now works as an installation senior archaeologist here. We knew at the end of our 60 days, we were going home to our families, a privilege denied for our brothers for so many years. JPAC is now the Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, and so far this year, the agency has accounted for 45 missing service members, according to the agency s website. The ceremony also included the recognition of four men, who not only survived the Bataan Death March, but Camp Mukden, Manchuria, during World War II. inside this issue Gate closure scheduled Wendy Brown / Fort Bliss Bugle Editor Carl Robinson, center, El Paso city representative and Vietnam veteran, stands with, from left, Erwin Johnson, Robert Rosendahl, Ralph Griffith and Randall Edwards, who survived the Bataan Death March, and Camp Mukden, Manchuria, during World War II. Marcus Fichtl 24th Press Camp Headquarters Maria Contreras-Sweet, the administrator of the Small Business Association conducted a roundtable discussion here Sept. 16. The roundtable brought small business leaders from El Paso and post military leaders to discuss their experiences building business and working together in the greater El Paso area. Established in 1953, the SBA is an independent agency of the federal government to aid, counsel, assist and protect the interests of small business. Assistance includes counseling programs, help with contracts procurement and easing access to capital. While the timing for the visit coincided with the 2015 Women s Business Center National Conference held in El Paso, Sweet said the reason for choosing to visit El Paso and Fort Bliss was because the area represents the United States as a whole. This city is a microcosm of what s going on around the country, Sweet said. El Paso has so many enriching things that are really representative of the rest of the country. The diversity of the population, the growing opportunities in terms of federal procurement, as well as the businesses we can contract with. The SBA El Paso district office was pleased the Washington, D.C. administrator visited. For people here it s a thrill, said Phillip C. Silva, director, SBA See SBA Page 2A

SBA Continued from Page 1A POW/MIA Continued from Page 1A on the back of a motorcycle driven by Joseph Hudson, a former POW in Iraq, said he hopes ceremonies such as Friday s help remind us of the atrocities Japanese forces committed during the war. Hudson said he enjoyed giving Edwards a ride. I asked him if he wanted to ride on a trike or if he wanted to ride on two wheels, and his exact words were, Ah, you only live once. I ll ride on two wheels, Hudson said. In addition to the WWII veterans, former Iraq POWs Shoshana Johnson, Hudson and David Williams all of whom live locally attended. The three former members of the 507th Maintenance Company, were taken as prisoners of war in Iraq in 2003, and they keep in touch, Johnson said. Once one of us knew the other was coming, we definitely wanted to be here together and meet these outstanding gentlemen, said Johnson, referring to the WWII veterans. Johnson said ceremonies like the one Friday are a reminder of the sacrifices people have made and the fact people are still sacrificing. For those who didn t come home, their families are still going through a lot, wondering what happened to them, Johnson said. Ceremonies like this remind us that although we re doing OK, there are still people suffering and waiting for a final answer. Edwards, Griffith, Erwin Johnson and Rosendahl were in El Paso attending the 32nd annual reunion of Camp Mukden POWs. The group went on a driving tour of the post, ate lunch at the Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division, dining facility, attended a memorial service at Center Dusty Bayley / Rolling Thunder New Mexico Joe Hudson, left, a former member of the 507th Maintenance Company, and prisoner of war in Iraq, prepares to give Randall Edwards, right, a survivor of the Bataan Death March and Camp Mukden, Manchuria, during World War II, a ride to the National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony Friday. Chapel One and visited the Old Fort Bliss Replica and the Fort Bliss and Old Ironsides Museums. Mollard thanked the four men for their sacrifices. As I walked with my hat, my sturdy boots and a Camelback full of water, I tried to imagine the horrors faced by those who endured this, by you all sitting here today, Mollard said. There s no way to ever repay that debt, but in a small way I hope that I have been able to bring closure to grieving families, and bring home some of your fallen brothers to finally rest. The Department of Defense and small business relationship is what really stands out for Sweet. We just had record contracting across the country, and it was the DoD that led the way and we wanted to come here to thank everyone for doing a good job, Sweet said. Part of the DoD and the surrounding communities way of reaching its goals, Sweet said, is to help Soldiers become entrepreneurs. We at SBA have such tremendous respect for our veterans and we want to help them on their journey of continuing to serve our nation as small business owners and entrepreneurs, she said. Sweet spoke of the Boots to Business and Reboot to Business programs that give service members transitioning and transitioned out of the military counseling on a business plan, a capital plan and a marketing plan. SBA s then assist service members banks by zeroing out fees on SBA loans up to 50,000 and halving fees on up to a million dollar loan. Sweet said the SBA also certifies vets to give them consideration for government contracts. Sweet said the SBA has just launched a program for women veterans called VWISE, where female veterans can discuss with one another about becoming an entrepreneur. While the boom in contracts has slowed because the installation is nearing its Base Realignment and Closure goals, Silva said, the contracts have become more robust transitioning from 300,000 contracts to millions of dollars. Now, with years of experience, local small businesses are better equipped to handle bigger contracts and can compete with larger corporations. I think I continue to see the growth, but I see a lot of that going to small business, Silva said. The end result is they will have opportunities to grow. Sweet shared Silva s opinion. Where better than to be at bliss, (than) at Fort Bliss, Sweet said. The relationship between Bliss and El Paso is really symbolic of what we want to see across the nation. The weight gym was setup to reduce recovery time needed to get back in shape once the Soldiers return from field training. Iron Thunder commander, Lt. Col. Brandon C. Nirenberg established ITTA prior to Network >> Sgt. Kelby J.D. Integration Exercise 15.2, McKinney a five-week field training exercise. Not everyone works at the same time during the field exercise and that makes it difficult to come up with physical training schedules, and the Soldiers are on their own when it comes to exercise, Nirenberg said. He also said to motivate the Soldiers and reduce recovery time needed to get back in shape he set up a weight gym in the field. There isn t any recovery for our bodies once we get back from the field, said Sgt. Kelby J.D. McKinney, command driver, 4th Bn., 27th FA Regt., DIVARTY, 1st AD. We have to maintain our physical fitness the same way we maintain our equipment. Due to the success of the weight gym, Nirenberg looked for other ways to promote and encourage his unit s Soldiers to remain Iron Thunder ready outside of the field. In August, about 30 officers and enlisted Soldiers competed to test their strengths. The officers lead the way and were able to outperform the enlisted Soldiers, said 1st Lt. Travis P. David, executive officer, Btry. B, 4th Bn., 27th FA Regt., DIVARTY, 1st AD, and winner of the pushup competition. It s a competition, and you are in it to win it, said Pfc. Kelly T. McDuffie, cannon crewmember, 4th Bn., 27th FA Regt., DIVARTY, 1st AD. If you don t win, there isn t anything wrong with that. You just know you have to workout more so you can win the next time. Soldiers such as McDuffie have started preparing for next month s competition. Not only do they work hard during physical training, but they also workout on their own, McDuffie said. He also said he does at least 100 situps at night before bed and feels confident he will be able to knock the officers out of the leading positions. Even though there is a rivalry growing between officers and enlisted, David said it brings everyone together and builds morale because everyone cheers and encourages those who compete, especially when it is someone from their battery. It s that esprit-de-corps, David said. It builds up morale to push others to try and beat my score, but I can t allow that to happen. Next month I m going to do even more so that I can stay on top.

Topics included hunting and household safety, field training exercise safety, motorcycle and personally owned vehicle safety. All of the ADA batteries participated and had their own certified instructors to teach the classes. Sgt. Andrew Funicella, Patriot system repairer, Battery B, and Cpl. Joshua Kent, wheeled vehicle mechanic, Battery E, briefed motorcycle safety and the proper wear of protective equipment. Funicella and Kent covered T-CLOCS (tires and wheels, controls, lights and electrics, oil and other fluids, and the chassis). Every year the deaths seem to be increasing from motorcycle accidents and we want everyone to understand the severity of it and train them to be safe and responsible riders, Funicella said. They also covered the proper way to wear motorcycle protective equipment. The Fort Bliss standard for motorcycle riders gear are the wear of a long sleeve or jacket trousers, boots or over the ankle shoes, (a) Department of Transportation approved helmet that is properly fastened to the chin, full finger gloves and shatter proof eye wear, Kent said. While the use of a reflective vest is not mandatory, Kent said, A reflective vest should be worn, because it is your responsibility as a rider to be seen. Kent also emphasized the training needs to be nonstop and everyone needs to be aware of the hazards motorcycle riders face. Soldiers are required to follow defined steps before they receive approval to ride a motorcycle. First, their commander must approve the Soldier to take an approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. Upon completion, they will receive an MSF card that must be carried at all times. Some states will accept the MSF card and transfer that into a motorcycle driver s license. They will also need to continue taking mandatory training such as the Experienced Rider s course, Military Sport Rider course and motorcycle refresher training. A unit-level motorcycle mentorship program must be established in accordance with Army Regulation , The Warrant Officer John C. Roeder /1st Bn., 43rd ADA, 11th ADA Bde. Sgt. Andrew Funicella, center, Patriot system repairer, Battery B, 1st Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, explains T-CLOCS (tires and wheels, controls, lights and electrics, oil and other fluids, and the chassis) to fellow Cobra Strike air defenders. Funicella also discussed the importance of motorcycle inspection. Army Safety Program, which includes activities that reinforce positive training, mentoring and riding. Soldiers receive counseling on the policy letters the command has established and they will execute a motorcycle safety contract with their commander. Riding is no joke; the proper wear of their (Soldiers ) riding >> Sgt. Andrew Funicella gear needs to be taken seriously, Kent said. Every year the deaths seem to be increasing from motorcycle accidents and we want everyone to understand the severity of it and train them to be safe and responsible riders. 7 FORT BLISS BUGLE September 24, A DIVARTY leadership outlines fires plan Staff Sgt. Corey Baltos / 16th MPAD Col. Andrew Rendon, commander, Division Artillery, 1st Armored Division, outlines his unit s plan to shape the division s operational environment during a fires seminar here Thursday. The seminar focused on the future of fires missions and battles. By Staff Sgt. Corey Baltos 16th MPAD Col. Andrew Rendon, commander, Division Artillery, 1st Armored Division, outlined his unit s plan to help shape the division s operational environment to win the fight during a fires seminar here Thursday. We want to set up the division for success. The brigades are no longer on their own, Rendon said. Rendon said the brigade would meet their mission of enabling the brigade combat teams to close in on the fight by fostering relationships with both the command and subordinate units, and by identifying battlefield and fire support challenges. As the fight progresses we need to have a two-way conversation with the battalions, said Chief Warrant Officer 2 James Flint, counterfire officer, Division Artillery, 1st Armored Division. One of the challenges identified was the need for precision guided munitions. Precision munitions reduce the risk of collateral damage, said John Aslanian, product manager for guided precision munitions and mortar systems, Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. They reduce the risk of fratricide, turn suppression into lethality and reduce the logistical burden. The next bi-annual fires seminar, scheduled for spring 2016, will focus on air ground integration and airspace management. DONATE A donation to Animal Rescue League makes you the cat s meow! AL UDEID AIR BASE, Qatar Soldiers assigned to Battery C, Crusaders, 2nd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, can look back on their time in Qatar with pride knowing they have performed their mission. The last 10 months have provided the unit with first hand Even with the experience of the importance of air defense in the eyes of a Soldier; something that is not always fully comprehended at rigorous mission home station. Even without firing a single missile, air defense artillery requirements, the performs its mission of deterrence every day, said Sgt. 1st Crusaders had Class Jacob Dorner, fire control platoon sergeant. This means that the very presence of air defense artillery in the region ensures that potential antagonist countries will think twice about to participate in the opportunity firing against U.S. and allied forces. The unit focused on various training exercises throughout unique training last year in preparation of this deployment with real world that conveyed scenarios, but the importance of how air defense fit into the bigger picture did not resonate with the Soldiers until this deployment. interlocks into how air defense Taking over the mission in Qatar meant carrying out the commander s intent every day as air defenders. Soldiers had the overall defensive structure. to comprehend how to operate and maintain their fighting systems while understanding their responsibilities for the mission. It was an eye-opening experience, learning that what we do at our level is seen by commanding generals, said Spc. Daniel Leffew, tactical planning workstation operator. It really makes you understand the importance of our job. Even with the rigorous mission requirements, the Crusaders had the opportunity to participate in unique training that conveyed how air defense interlocks into the overall defensive structure. During the semi-annual Joint Air Defense Exercise, the unit had the opportunity to participate in integrated training with Air Force and Navy assets. These inimitable events provided Btry. C Soldiers with first hand experience how other branches of the military rely upon air defense artillery. In May, Btry. C had the opportunity to conduct a full mobility exercise to validate a future Patriot site. The unit march ordered from their existing site, emplaced onto a new location and validated the site all within the span of a day. This training exercise required every Soldier to perform his or her best and understand their individual battle drills whether emplacing launching stations down-range, running cables or preparing up-range equipment for immediate operation. While there was the opportunity for training, this event had real-world implications. Certifying this site ensured future Patriot units will successfully take on their mission when the time comes to move. Training cannot be more tough and realistic than in the deployed environment, said Sgt. 1st Class Jason Rayburn, trainer and master gunner, Btry. C. That s why it has been imperative to utilize every opportunity out here to train our Soldiers. Eventually, after 2nd Bn., 43rd ADA, is successfully deployed back to Fort Bliss, its parent unit, 11th ADA Imperial Brigade, will have all four of its battalions at home station. This unique situation will present opportunities to collaborate between sister units and conduct constructive roundtable discussions between the ADA leadership. Upon redeployment, Soldiers who were once inexperienced crewmembers can now train their comrades because they have become subject matter experts. While in theater, 2nd Bn., 43rd ADA, had the opportunity to train up sister units while also learning from the experiences of fellow air defenders. Crews from 1st Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery, also from the 11th ADA Bde., shadowed 2nd Bn., 43rd ADA Reg., crews in theater for two weeks of training on tactical operations and learned from crews who were performing their daily mission. The Crusaders of C Battery have overcome many challenges throughout their time in theater, but we look forward to bringing our hard-earned knowledge and first hand experience back to Fort Bliss, Texas, to assist our sister units with tough and realistic training, said Capt. Mison Kang, commander, C Btry., 2nd Bn., 43rd ADA, 11th ADA Bde.
