1 Wisconsin DNR Wildland Fire Academy Feb 10-14, 17-21, 2014 Location The 2014 WI DNR Wildland Fire Academy will be held at the Stoney Creek Inn, 1100 Imperial Avenue in Rothschild, WI. Tuition/Registration Registration fees for classes vary according to length of class and material costs. Tuition includes lunches for the students for everyday they are in class. Check the registration form for fees by class selection. Registrations must be received by Jan 27, DNR employees are registered by supervisors using the Forestry Training Registration System. Partners please complete the attached registration form and return to Tammy Sykes at or mail to 107 Sutliff Ave, Rhinelander, WI Prerequisites Several courses require prerequisite course work or experience. Partners please send proof of prerequisites with your registration form. Acceptable documentation includes: IQS and IQCS records or course certificates and Incident Qualification Cards. Confirmation Confirmations will be ed as registrations are received and approved. Course announcements and prework will be included, please read carefully. If you have not received a confirmation by February 1st please contact or Lodging Students need to make their own lodging reservations and payment arrangements. 2 WISCONSIN WILDLAND FIRE ACADEMY February 2014 Course Selections S-131 Advanced Firefighter Training Start: Tuesday, February 11, 2014, 8:00 am End: Tuesday, February 11, 2014, 5:00 pm Prerequisites: Qualified as Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2), S-130 Basic Firefighter and S-190 Introduction to Fire Behavior, Course Description: Advanced Firefighter Training is an 8-hour course designed to meet the training needs of both advanced firefighter/squad boss (FFT1) and incident commander type 5 (ICT5). The course is interactive, and contains several tactical exercises that encourage group and class discussion. Individual instructional units cover fireline reference materials, documenting materials, documenting activities, fireline communications, tactics and safety. Class size: 30 (IRPG); will be available at class if you do not have one. Course Fee: $50.00 S-133 Look Up, Look Down, Look Around Start: Monday, February 10, 2014, 12:30 pm End: Monday, February 10, 2014, 4:30 pm Prerequisites: None Course Description: This course examines the wildland fire environment and the factors firefighters should observe on the fire line in order to anticipate fire behavior. Class Size: 30 Students should bring: Fireline Handbook and Incident Response Pocket Guide Course Fee: $35.00 S-200 Initial Attack Incident Commander Start: Tuesday, February 11, 2014, 8:00 am End: Friday, February 14, 2014, 4:30 pm Prerequisites: Qualified as any single resource boss (CRWB, ENGB, TRPB, FIRB, etc.) and satisfactory completion of pre-course work. Course Description: This course is designed to meet the training needs of the Initial Attack Incident Commander (ICT4). It is presented in a lecture/discussion format and supplemented with group exercises. The six instructional units include: Foundation Skills; Intelligence Gathering and Documentation; Size up the Incident; Develop a Plan of Action; Post Fire Activities; Evaluating Incident Objectives and Manage the Incident. Evaluation of the trainee is by unit tests and performance based evaluations. Class size: 15 Course Fee: $ S-215 Fire Operations in the Urban Interface Start: Wednesday February 12, :00 am End: Friday February 14, 2014, 4:30 pm Prerequisites: Wildland fire students must be qualified as an Advanced Firefighter FFT1. Course Description: This course is designed to assist structure and wildland firefighters who will be making tactical decisions when confronting wildland fire that threatens life, property, and improvements in the wildland/urban interface. Instructional units include: interface awareness, size-up, initial strategy and incident action plan, structure triage, structure protection tactics, incident action plan assessment and update, follow-up and public relations, and firefighter safety in the interface. 3 S-230 Single Resource Boss Crew Boss Start: Monday February 10, 2014, 8:00 am End: Wednesday February 13, 2014, 4:30 pm Prerequisites: Qualified as advanced firefighter/squad boss (FFT1), successful completion of Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290) and pre-course work. Course Description: Crew boss (Single Resource) is a classroom skill course to produce student proficiency in the performance of all duties associated with the single resource crew boss, from initial dispatch through demobilization to home unit. Topics include: operational leadership; preparation and mobilization; assignment preparation; risk management, entrapment avoidance; safety and tactics; off-line duties; demobilization; and post-incident activities. This course is designed for use throughout the United States, and includes examples from all geographic areas. Course Fee: $ S-231 Single Resource Boss Engine Boss Start: Thursday February 13, 2014, 8:00 am End: Friday February 14, 2014, 4:30 pm Prerequisites: Qualified as advanced firefighter/squad boss (FFT1), and successful completion of Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior, S-290 and Crew Boss (Single Resource), S-230. Course Description: Engine Boss (Single Resource) is a skill course to produce student proficiency in the performance of all duties associated with the engine boss, single resource (ENGB). Topics include engine and crew capabilities and limitations, information sources, fire size up considerations, tactics and Wildland/urban interface. S-236 Single Resource Boss Heavy Equipment Boss Start: Monday February 17, 2014, 8:00 am End: Tuesday February 18, 2014, 4:30 pm Prerequisites: Qualified as advanced firefighter/squad boss (FFT1), and successful completion of pre-course work. Course Description: This course is designed to be interactive in nature. It contains exercises designed to facilitate group and class discussion. Flexibility is built into the class so instructors can customize lessons to address specific local needs. S-234 Ignition Operations Start: Wednesday February 19, 2014, 8:00 am End: Friday February 21, 2014, 4:30 pm Prerequisites: S-290 Intermediate Fire Behavior and satisfactory completion of pre-course work. Course Description: This course introduces the roles and responsibilities of a firing boss (FIRB), common firing devices, and general fire operations and techniques. It provides students with important information concerning general tasks required to be successful. Course fee: $200.00

4 S-270 Basic Air Operations Start: Monday February 10, 2014, 8:00 am End: Tuesday February 11, 2014, 4:30 pm Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of pre-course work. Course Description: This course covers aircraft types and capabilities, aviation management and safety for flying in and working with agency aircraft, tactical and logistical uses of aircraft, and requirements for helicopter take-off and landing areas. Class size: 40 Students Should Bring: Fireline Handbook FI-110 Wildland Fire Observations and Origin Scene Protection for First Responders Start: Monday February 10, 2014, 10:30 am End: Monday February 10, 2014, 4:30 pm Prerequisites: None Course Description: The primary emphasis of this course is to teach sound Wildland fire observations and origin scene protection practices that enable first responders to a wildland fire scene to perform proper origin scene protection procedures. The course includes short lectures, electronic presentations, exercises, and class discussion. Class size: 30 Course Fee: $50.00
