1 TUCSAR BUGLE May 2017 The TUCSAR Bugle is a monthly publication (except during the months of June, July, and August when there will only be a special summer edition published sometime after the National Congress) of the Tucson Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. It is published at the first of the month and will be distributed by the 7 th of each month by for those members with and USPS for those without. Articles, suggestions, and ideas are solicited and welcome please sent them to the future editor, when announced. Visit our Tucson SAR Chapter Website at: Compatriots, A Message from the Editor The temperature today hit 100F in the Old Pueblo. The Tucson summer is officially here and the snowbirds are flying away until late fall. As you prepare for your summer, remember that we still have delegate openings at the SAR National Congress this year. I hope that you can attend and if so, please contact the state secretary and register (free) as a delegate to help give us our full share of weight for any voting. The Congress will be in Knoxville, Tennessee from July 7 July 13 th. One outcome we are hoping for is that our own Warren Alter will be elected into the Secretary General office. Warren is currently the Treasurer General for SAR. Arizona SAR BOM and Meeting The April State meeting was at Casa Grande on April 29 th. Membership dues collections will now be made by the Chapter. It was noted that National is requesting Patriot bios from members, but be sure to include the patriot number when submitting. If attending this year s Congress, please contact the State Secretary to register at a delegate. We have open delegate slots to fill. The President General, Larry Guzy will be in Prescott Arizona on November 11 and 12 th and will march in the Prescott Veterans Day Parade on the 11 th. Later that evening there will be a dinner and ball. Please plan on attending! If you can participate in the Memorial Day Event at East Lawn Cemetery, please contact Rick Collins. We need your support if you are around. For those of you staying closer to home. We will again be in the Summerhaven July 4 th parade. Plan to be a part (uniforms or period clothes are not requirements). Contact Rick Collins for more details. It s delightful to be in the cool pines in July. Finally, we have word that the President General will be in Prescott, AZ. For any non-natives, that s pronounced Preskitt. First join us in the Prescott Veterans Day Parade, then later on November 11 th is a ball. We haven t done that in a few years so let your significant other drag you out on the dance floor and enjoy the evening. Stay for the State Meeting on November 12. I wish for you all a safe and enjoyable summertime. See you in September, if not before. Bugle Editor, Bill Aurand (Have a ball in Prescott for Veterans Day) GEORGE WASHINGTON TIDBITS George never had wooden teeth. His various dentures were made of human, cow or horse teeth, ivory with lead, copper and tin alloys. George did not wear a white wig. He powdered his hair George never lived in the White House George lost more battles than he won in the Revolutionary War. He was however a capable and resilient leader. George belonged to no political party. In fact, he warned against them in his farewell address. George and Martha had no children together. They did raise two of Martha s children from a previous marriage TUCSAR BUGLE 1

2 Children of the American Revolution Kachina Society Report May 2017 The National Children of the American Revolution s Annual Convention was held April in Arlington, Virginia. Members of the Kachina Society were not able to attend this year but received national recognition for the National Merit Award and the Kids Helping Kids and Mountain Schools contests. This year the Kachina Society won a blue ribbon for their National Merit Award work. We took second place nationally in the Kids Helping Kids Contest for our volunteer work and/or donations to Davidson Elementary School, Military Liaison Office (MLO) at the Tucson Airport, Casa de los Ninos, Lions Eye Bank, Ronald McDonald House, Tucson Community Food Bank, Fisher House, JROTC Program at Cienega High School and the Crazy Sock Drive. We also placed second in the Mountain Schools contest for our local and statewide Crazy Sock collections. The Kachina Society collected 406 pairs of socks that were sent to the Tamassee DAR School in South Carolina and the Crossnore Children s Home in North Carolina. (The DAR just recently took on the responsibility of a foster care for the Children Home.) The Kachina kids would like to thank all those people that supported us during the past year and those that donated socks to our drive. On April 27 the Kachina Society and the Tucson Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution co-sponsored the Awards Ceremony at the Cienega High School s NJROTC Program. We helped set up, serve and clean up the light refreshments and snacks for the ceremony. There were 50 senior cadets that were honored. The Kachina Society made a patriotic banner wishing the seniors good luck. Frank Pierce President Kachina Society Beverly Giordano Senior President Kachina Society (The Kachina C.A.R. Crazy Sock Drive Program) YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING AZ SAR EDUCATION AND OUTREACH NEEDS YOU All Compatriots who represent SAR and interface with persons under the age of 18 should complete the Youth Protection Training (YPT) program and printout the certificate. Attendees then helped themselves to an excellent buffet breakfast. S. Drug Enforcement Administration Intelligence Research Specialist Rachel S. Heinrich, U. S. 6 (Eagle Scout Sebatian Rahmer with Color Guard Member Bill Aurand) EAGLE Scout Sebastian Rahmer (Compatriot Robert Irwin and Past President Gerry Lawford) Robert Irwin inducted into the Tucson Chapter, SAR At the February Chapter Meeting, Robert Irwin was inducted into the Chapter and already has been actively supporting our efforts and attended the Law Enforcement Celebration this year. Welcome to Tucson Chapter, SAR. Eagle Scout Sebastian Rahmer had his Court of Honor at St. Cyril Church on April 28 th. Color Guard Members Rudy Byrd and Bill Aurand attended and presented the new Eagle Scout with the SAR Eagle Certificate. It needs to be noted that his mother remembers that the Tucson Chapter, SAR Color Guard attended her naturalization ceremony several years earlier. The family, originally from Chile, is a true American success story. We look forward to Sebastian s bright future. John Irwin Virginia Militia Patriot By Compatriot Robert Irwin Robert's patriot ancestor is his 3x Great Grandfather, John Irwin, who served for three years in the Virginia Line of the Continental Army. A record copy from the DAR also indicates that the same John Irwin served in Col. William Linn's militia regiment under the command of Gen. George Rogers Clark on a successful retaliatory expedition against the Shawnee Indians in the summer of John received a bounty land warrant of 100 acres on 20 June John was born about 1736 in Augusta County, Virginia. About 1767, he was united in marriage with Margaret McFarlane in Augusta County. This marriage produced 10 children. John died in January 1826 in Nelson County, Kentucky. Several of John's descendants (with the Irwin surname) took up arms to preserve the Union in the Civil War; two grandsons served in Indiana regiments; one grandson (Solomon) fought in a Kentucky Union regiment and three great grandsons enlisted in Indiana units. As an item of interest, grandson Solomon Irwin was a childhood playmate of Abraham Lincoln. No May Chapter Meeting this Year There will be no May Chapter meeting this year. Enjoy the summer break. (Compatriot Rudy Byrd protecting the Eagle Court of Honor) My Last Issue of the TUCSAR Bugle This is my last TUCSAR Bugle as editor. Thank you for all the articles, photos and suggestions over the years. I have truly enjoyed serving in this position and I want to thank Warren Alter for the chance to take over what he had been doing for so long in his tenure. I believe I started this gig with the November 2010 newsletter. I hope that the Bugle won t go into a hiatus mode, but so far no one has come forward to take and run with the baton. If you have a couple hours free near the end of the month, won t you give it a go? Thank you for considering the opportunity. - Compatriot and Editor, Bill Aurand TUCSAR BUGLE 6
