1 Cincinnati Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Cincinnati PATRIOT Volume 31, Issue 11, CCSAR Color Guard Attends George Vest Memorial Everyone was all smiles during the George Vest Celebration October 1 at Verona Vineyards, which is situated on the once-larger Vest farm. SAR President General Larry Guzy, Secretary General Warren Alter, Ohio Society President Donald McGraw and SAR Color Guard Commander Mark C. Anthony joined Cincinnati Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Cincinnati SAR Commander Paul M. Wilke, President Jack Bredenfoerder and Color Guardsmen Ken Carpenter, Bradley Jarard, Lee Wilkerson and Michael Gunn plus a dozen more Kentucky and National SAR members at Verona Vineyards. Patriot George Vest was born about 1760 in Virginia. He served as a private with the Virginia Militia. He began his military career as a youngster during Lord Dumore s War, serving under Capt. Thomas Dillard and Col. Andrew Lewis in a militia from Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He was in Middlesex on the Pasquotank River when Dunmore was driven away. In 1776, he marched with William Christian against the Cherokee Indians in Tennessee, serving nearly eight months. He returned to Tennessee in 1777 as a private commanded by Capt. James Dickson and Col. Evan Shelby for treaty talks with the Cherokee on the Holston River. In 1778 he served again under Capt. Dillard, guarding the frontier, but this time with General George Rogers Clark. For his service, Vest received a land grant in Shelby County, Kentucky. He eventually settled near Verona in Boone County Kentucky and sired four sons. Many descendant members of his family joined other well wishers including CCSAR in the crowd of about 200 at the ceremony last Sunday. This year has been an amazing year of activities and accomplishments for the Cincinnati SAR. The last ten issues of the Cincinnati Patriot are a testament to your great work! You may want to review those past issues and take some time to reflect on how truly blessed we are as a chapter, a society and a nation. We are ultimately blessed by the gift of freedom and our Constitution from our patriot ancestors. We have also received the blessings of each other s friendship and camaraderie. It is through these bonds with each other, and our mutual cooperation, that we are able to accomplish so much good for our community. This is the major key to keeping patriotism alive: we work together; respect each other s talents and opinions; we share our work with the community; and we always honor the wisdom and accomplishments of our patriot ancestors. In December, we will all gather for our annual meeting. As we prepare our annual officer and committee reports, let us make sure we document all of our great work, but also offer areas where we can grow in Thank you gentlemen for your continuing dedication. 3 C Battle Days Parade and Memorial, Point Pleasant, WV Story and photos contributed by John Franklin (Western Reserve Society) On Saturday, October 7th, 2017, the SAR Color Guard once again led the Battle Days Parade in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Battle Days is an annual commemorative event of the Battle of Point Pleasant, which occurred October 10, 1774 at the point where the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers meet. This year, SAR compatriots from West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Virginia participated in the parade through the heart of this Ohio River community of 4,500 residents. The parade concluded at the Tu- Endie-Wie State Park where members gathered for a group photo in front of the Point Pleasant Battlefield Monument. NSSAR President General Larry Guzy (center in a blue and white uniform) proudly served as Battle Days Colonial Governor. The following day, the Point Pleasant Chapter of the West Virginia Society SAR hosted the Battle of Point Pleasant Memorial Service on the site of the battle between the Virginia Militia and the Indians from the Shawnee and Mingo tribes. This year the program for the Memorial Service was changed because of rainy weather. There was a tent for the speakers, presenters of wreaths, and guests. There were also tents for members of the color guard and for the wreaths. 4 The Making of the Cincinnati Chapter, Ohio Society, Sons of the American Revolution George Stewart, Chapter Historian On Saturday evening, February 22, 1930 members of the Ohio Society, Sons of the Revolution (founded in 1883) and the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution held a joint dinner meeting at the University Club in Cincinnati, Ohio. There were twelve members of the Cincinnati Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution present, sixty-eight members of the Sons of the Revolution, and six guests. At this meeting the two united as the Ohio Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. The President elected that night was Harry Walter Hutchins, who had been President of the Sons of the Revolution in The speaker of the evening, Rev. Walter A. Hopkins, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Covington, Kentucky, delivered a inspiring address, The Spirit of America. The union of these two societies gave this area a much more influential organization and a much stronger and better-coordinated program. 5 Help needed to preserve historic Princeton Battlefield Contributed By: MICHAEL GUNN CCSAR The Trustees of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution announced their support of the efforts of the Princeton Battlefield Society and the Civil War Trust battlefield preservation group to purchase 15 acres of a part of the Revolutionary War Princeton Battlefield from the Institute for Advancing Study in New Jersey. Adding the land to the New Jersey Park System's trust will increase the size of the Princeton Battlefield State Park by 16 percent. The Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (CCSAR) supports this initiative to protect this important legacy for America. The Institute and the Civil War Trust have reached an agreement for the sale of this land in order to preserve the site of George Washington's famous counterattack, but financial support is urgently needed. CCSAR Leads Circleville Pumpkin Festival Parade Led by acting State Color Guard Commander, Steve Frash of the Marietta Chapter, members of the Cincinnati Chapter as well as the Camp Charlotte Chapter were the honored color guard and highlight of the Circleville, Ohio Pumpkin Festival. The four-day event was capped-off by the Queen s Parade in which more than 50 festival queens and courts from around the state are showcased in one grand parade. 6 Naturalization Ceremony Cincinnati SAR President Bredenfoerder and Past President Gunn welcomed 65 new citizens at a naturalization ceremony held on October 6th at the Potter Stewart US District Courthouse. The Honorable Stephanie K. Bowman officiated. This was an extra special naturalization for President Bredenfoerder because he was able to witness his neighbors Gautam and Ulka Sardar take the Oath of Citizenship. The Sardar's received an extra special surprise on their front porch when they returned home - a new US flag set. We're sure they will fly it proudly! President Jack Bredenfoerder and Compatriots Ken Carpenter and Dan Schmitz welcomed 72 new citizens at a naturalization ceremony held at Cincinnati Summit Country Day School on Friday, October 27th. The Honorable Stephanie K. Bowman officiated. Welcome! 7 Flag Certificate Presented The Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution presented a Flag Certificate to the Shiloh United Methodist Church in Delhi Township, Hamilton County, Ohio for the manner by which they fly the 50 Star Flag of the United States of America. Pictured here is the flag as it located next to their chapel and complex on 5261 Foley Rd, Cincinnati, OH Their all weather flag uses proper flag flying etiquette for the United States including flying the flag in approved lighting and at the specified height. The Church Colors are presented below the National Colors as shown here in the photo and lighted from two beacons from both the east and west sides.
