Summer, Year Celebration PRESIDENT S REPORT In June I was in Albuquerque, NM to honor our Father of the Arizona Society SAR, Herbert Fulwiler Robinson, by placing a grave marker where he was laid to rest. Several others from Arizona were there and the musket salute by the color guard capped off the wonderful event. July 4 th marked the 240 th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. I hope you flew your flag on this day also. Compatriots All; First, I want to thank all that attended the Arizona SAR BOM meeting on 23 April 16. I hope everyone enjoyed the special presentations of Steve Monez, Rudy Byrd, Jan Huber, Allen Nash and Matt Scott to the school age children who were our special guests. I had a very positive responses from both Tami Turner and Leslie Alexander (CAR Seniors) thanking us for including the young people. I had the pleasure of attending the Arizona State DAR Gala Banquet along with posting the colors for them. Thanks to Matt Scott, Bill Hearter, Jan Huber, Jerry Davis, Loren Littlefield, and Keith Hugus for coming to post colors. We as a Society continue to support our sisters of the DAR whenever and wherever we can. April and May are the months that our chapters were busy presenting the SAR ROTC medals to high school and college cadets in our communities. This is a very worthwhile endeavor. I encourage all members to participate in these presentations. It means a lot to the recipients when we are there in person to do it. The SAR Congress was held 8 to 13 July in Boston. We had eight in attendance. All who attended were treated to a wonderful Memorial Service in the Old South Church as well as two banquets. I want to personally congratulate Warren Alter, our newly elected National Treasurer General. I had the honor of accepting several awards on behalf of our state society. These included both awards given by the George Washington Endowment Fund. All who made this happen should be commended. We are adding several streamers to our flag. Future meetings include the fall BOM which may now be held on 12 Nov at a place to be decided. We are working with the scheduler for President General J. Michael Tomme, Sr.for his potential visit to Arizona that weekend. I know it is Veteran s Day week, so we will try to avoid parades and other services as much as possible. In fact, I have chosen the theme, Supporting Our Nations Veterans for this meeting. More on this later this summer. Lastly, I am pleased to see more new members becoming active. Let s keep up our good work. Thank you for your support and enjoy the rest of your summer. Stephen Miller President In the month of May I met with members of the Palo Verde, Barry Goldwater and Tucson chapters before they went dark for the summer months. May also ends with Memorial Day. I know that several members were able to attend a parade, memorial ceremony or other patriotic event and properly flew their flag (half staff until 12 pm, then raise to full staff). Speaking of flags, I commend all chapters for presenting at least one Flag Certificate before 15 April. Now it is a new year for this so let s do it again.

Breaking News President General J. Michael Tomme May Visit AZ Thanks to the efforts of our VPG Walter Seaton and President Stephen Miller, there is a good possibility that the President General may visit AZ again this year. Although the dates and plans are not firm yet, it appears we will have to move our November Board of Managers Meeting from the 5 th of Nov to the 12 th of Nov to accommodate the visit. Location is being worked on, but it will likely be in the Phoenix area, so mark the date and try to keep your calendars clear. More details will be shared as we learn more. Mexico and joined the New Mexico SAR shortly after its formation in Compatriot Robinson was the Adjutant General of the National Guard in the territory of Arizona from 1898 to 1902 and at the time of his death in New Mexico on May 17, 1956, was the longest living territorial Adjutant General in the U.S. Chaplain Jones gave a blessing for those assembled followed by the Gravestone Placement by cemetery staff which was closely supervised by Compatriot Swanson. A benediction was given by New Mexico Society Chaplain John Thomas followed by the retirement of colors by the color guard. The day was capped off with a reception by the New Mexico Society at Veteran's Park, Albuquerque. In closing - Happy 120th Anniversary Arizona Society!! A Day for Herbert Fulwiler Robinson The Father of the Arizona SAR By Al Niemeyer David Swanson realized a dream when the Arizona and New Mexico Societies jointly held a Gravestone Laying Ceremony for Compatriot Herbert Fulwiler Robinson on June 13th, 2016 at Sunset Memorial Park, Albuquerque, NM. Compatriot Swanson put considerable time and resources into proving that Compatriot Robinson was officially the "Father of the Arizona Society, Sons of the American Resolution (1896.)" It should be noted that the ceremony also celebrates the 120th Anniversary of the Arizona Society. An informal dinner was held the day before the ceremony (June 12th) at El Pinto Restaurant. The dinner was well attended. As for the ceremony itself, a warm welcome was given by Historian Swanson to the attendees followed by the AZ & NM Color Guard members presenting the colors. Arizona Society Chaplain J. Michael Jones gave the Invocation. Introduction of guests were then made, each of which made brief comments: VPG, Rocky Mountain District Michael E. Barger; Arizona Society President Stephen J. Miller and New Mexico Society President Andrew S. Lyngar, Jr. A brief talk of the life of Herbert F. Robinson was then given by Historian Swanson. Herbert Fulwiler Robinson was proclaimed the Father of the Arizona Society Sons of the American Revolution during the state s annual meeting on February 20, 2016, and on April 28, 2016, the Arizona SAR received an official Commendation from Arizona Governor Doug Ducey which commemorated our 120th Anniversary and the actions of Compatriot Robinson in it organization. Robinson officially organized the Arizona SAR on June 13, 1896, and was its president for three terms. Soon after the turn of the century he moved to Albuquerque, New (The dedication Gravestone of Herbert F. Robinson) (David Swanson, State Historian at the ceremony) (Color Guard fires a salute) 2

From the Desk of Treasurer General Warren Alter (VPG Michael Barger Speaking) First, and foremost I wish to thank the many friends, Compatriots, Chapters and the AZ SAR for having supported, encouraged, and endorsed me in my campaign for Treasurer General. Thanks to you, your letters and s of support, and lots of work I got the National Nominating Endorsement in February which was critical to the success of my campaign. Your encouragement and wishes helped Nancy and I get through a long year of travel. At Congress, the election for Treasurer General was the only contested General Officer race. The election was held on Tuesday at Congress. Thanks to the delegates from AZ, as well as delegates who voted for me from around the country, I was elected as Treasurer General for I was sworn in and installed at the Wednesday night Banquet along with the other General Officers, including our very own Walter Seaton, former AZ SAR President who was sworn in as Vice President General Rocky Mountain District. Congratulations to him. The General Officers elected and installed for were: (NM SAR President Andrew Lyngar, Jr speaks) (AZ SAR President Stephen J. Miller speaks) (View of the Gravestone Ceremony) President General J. Michael Tomme (GA) Secretary General Larry T. Guzy (GA) Treasurer General Warren M Alter (AZ) Chancellor General Davis L. Wright (DE) Genealogist General John D. Sinks (DC) Registrar General Russel F. Devenney, Jr (MO) Historian General John (Jack) T. Manning (NH) Librarian General C. Bruce Pickett (AL) (dual member AZ) Surgeon General Dr. Larry M Leslie (KY) Chaplain General Rt. Rev. Louis V. Carlson Jr (CA) As Treasurer General, I am in charge of the maintenance of financial records; advice and action on financial issues; Headquarters merchandise operation; and dues. As part of my office, I am a member of the Executive Committee and the SAR Foundation Board. Additionally, PG Tomme has assigned committees to each General Officer to serve as a liaison and an ex-officio member: The Treasurer General is assigned eight of these committees: Budget Committee, Finance Committee, GWEF Fund Board, GWEF Distribution Committee, GWEF Fund Raising Committee, Investment Committee, Merchandise Committee, and Premium Member Medals Committee. Yes, I hit the ground running with my first Executive Committee meeting on Thursday morning at 6:30 am and SAR Foundation Meeting at 8:00 am. My computer and phone have been keeping busy, but I am having FUN. Yes, Dr. Byrd may be referring me for a psych evaluation one of these days. What is the old saying, you don t have to be crazy to work here, but it sure helps! By the way, speaking of Dr. Abraham Ruddell Byrd, III MD CONGRATULATIONS. I had the honor of escorting him at the Minuteman Ceremony on Monday night and he received his Minuteman Award. For those that don t know, this is the Society s highest award and is limited to no more than 6 new medals a year. Arizona now has three active Minuteman Awardees: J. Michael Jones, Warren Alter, and A. Ruddell Byrd. Mike set the standard and mentored us both. 3

Congratulations Rudy, this is well deserved and we are AZ Proud! So what does the future hold, besides a lot of work as Treasurer General. Well I am pleased to announce that Nancy and I decided we hadn t done enough traveling and campaigning so I have formally announced I am a candidate for Secretary General Yes, we will be traveling around the states and districts again, but this time, I will be in a dual role: Treasurer General and candidate for Secretary General. believe it is critical that General Officers be seen and get to meet as many compatriots as possible. Our organization is large, and unfortunately many cannot or may not choose to attend National events and meetings such as Leadership meetings in Louisville or Congress wherever it may be held. Therefore, the only way some of these members will meet or get to know our leaders is for them to travel to the various states and districts. Frankly, this is the fun part of the job, and allows Nancy and I to meet and get to know many new people. By listening, I also learn what is important to these members and what they want our society to do. You will see my campaign flyer elsewhere in this newsletter. I am once again asking for the support and endorsement of AZ SAR, our chapters, and members. I hope you will continue to allow me to represent AZ on a National level so that I may continue to support and assist this wonderful organization. Congress Award News Warren Alter Our State President was kept quite busy collecting and representing our state and chapters in receiving many awards. He turned them all over to me as State Secretary, so here is the list. For those belonging to chapters, we will get them to you at the next BOM meeting. For those individuals, we will get them to the Committee Chair or Chapter President to present to you. Please note, these are the awards I noted and/or have certificates for. There were other compatriots and spouses recognized for individual awards, accomplishments, and financial support of the many youth groups, CAAH, and SAR Foundation for which I don t have a list. But our thanks go out to those who have supported and continue to support SAR and its many projects. 5 Congratulations AZ SAR By Steve Monez The George Washington Endowment Fund Board was established by the Executive Committee and approved by the trustees during the meeting of February 27, This action followed two years of work by a special task force that had been asked to evaluate and propose a plan for the SAR to provide for the following: Establish a permanent restricted fund, the income of which would provide annual funding for support of the SAR unfunded and underfunded committees and special projects. Two SAR awards associated with the George Washington Endowment Fund are presented annually at the SAR Congress. The term of each award is from April 1 to the following March 31. The Howard F. Horne, Jr. Award goes to the SAR state-level society with the largest increase in new George Washington Endowment Fund fellows as a percentage of the society s membership. This award includes a $ stipend partially funded by the Delaware Fund, a flag streamer, and a certificate. The Walter Buchanan Buck Meek Award goes to the SAR state-level society with the largest numerical increase in new George Washington Endowment Fund fellows. 6 Warren Alter Endorsed by the Arizona SAR For Secretary General in The Arizona Society Board of Managers has voted to endorse Treasurer General Warren Alter in his campaign for Secretary General Compatriot J. Michael Jones announced this on July 30 th. Congratulations again Warren. Thank You to Our SAR Congress Arizona Delegation! write and/or maintain a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual for the conduct of his office. One and the same officer may hold the office of the Secretary and the Treasurer. This is a very important job for our Society, one that can t be left unfilled. Fortunately, Warren was able to find someone to step up and take over the Treasurer position (Ed Steinback) a while ago. This makes the Secretary job that much easier. This is an excellent time for someone to step up and volunteer to be our next Secretary, so that Warren can have time to help you learn what the job entails, through the rest of the year. Please give this some thought, and let both myself and your Chapter President know of your decision. Thank you, George Lipphardt Chairmen of the 2017 Nominating Committee 2016 Nominating Committee Modification: Gentlemen; (The 2016 SAR Congress, Arizona SAR delegation) State Secretary Position is now Open OTJ training cheerfully provided! Arizona Compatriots; As most of you are probably aware due to communications from your Chapter President, our State Secretary, Warren Alter will be concluding his position as Secretary at the end of this year. We have been extremely fortunate to have had Warren Chairing this job for quite a few years. Now, due to his expected move up in a National Officer position, as well as other commitments, he no longer will have the time to continue as our Secretary. This opens up a desirable State Officer position. So you won t have to find your copy of our Bylaws, I will post the information here so you will be familiar with what the job requirements are: The Secretary, at the direction of the President, shall call meeting of the Society and of the Board. He shall keep a fair and accurate record of all proceedings of all meetings of the Society and the Board, and shall turn over such records to his successor when he for any reason shall leave office. When he is absent from a meeting the President shall appoint an Acting Secretary to perform his duties for such meeting. Under the direction of the President the Secretary shall conduct the necessary correspondence of the Society and the Board. All such correspondence shall be available to all members of the Board upon request. He shall make such routine and special reports to the NSSAR as may be required by NSSAR. He shall It s getting close to the time when our organization needs to think about and come up with names for our State Officer positions for next year (2017), most importantly, our next Vice President. Our By-Laws state that, the Nominating Committee shall be composed of one member from each chapter, plus a chairman who shall vote only in case of a tie. Although this being the case, for the past few years (or longer) our Nominating Committee has consisted of just one person, that being the immediate, past president. Now that I m the, Immediate Past President, I feel that our organization needs more input into the selection for these very important positions. As such, I m asking for input from each of our eight chapters, as our Bylaws require. I ve asked each Chapter President to provide a name from his chapter, to be part of this committee. If for whatever reason he is unable to find a volunteer, then I m requesting that the Chapter President fill that position. I will be the Chairman of this committee. According to our State President s Timeline, the Nominating Committee needs to have the full list of State Officers to him by our next meeting, which will be in November. Not knowing how long it will take us to accomplish this task, I m asking that we get this committee established by the end of July. By the end of July I would like to have each selected committee member (or the Chapter President) if that be the case), send me an so that I ll know who are members of this committee. 1. Our 1 st assignment will be to select members for the position of Vice President (unless President Steve Miller wishes to continue for a second year). Please give this some thought, and be prepared to submit a name to the committee by the end of July. Preferably, your choice for VP would be someone who has been a chapter president or other officer. Also, pay 6

preference to those members that have been attending our National events. 2. I m well aware that there are many well qualified members for the position of State President (where our VP will hopefully move up to); but please narrow your considerations to members that will be willing (and can) attend our three state meetings. Also, this person needs to commit that he will be willing and able to attend our annual, National Congress and both Leadership Meetings. This expectation is from tradition, not a Bylaw requirement. Our state president needs to not only show presence at these functions, but also to bring home the information learned while there at the National level, to Arizona, to share with the rest of us. *The Vice President does not need to attend these three National functions, although it would be great if he would. 3. The committee member can select/submit anyone for these positions (including themselves), but the goal of having a representative from each chapter is because you know your chapter best and would hopefully submit from within your own chapter. 4. We also will need to know which state officers do not wish to continue another year in that position. Once we know that, we will need to find replacements for those positions becoming vacant. Past President, George Lipphardt New SARizona Editor Requested Please consider nominating yourself as the new editor of the Arizona SAR, SARizona Editor. The postion takes little time for most of the year as the newsletter is published only four times (January, April, Summer, and October). You get to see what all the chapters are doing and how vibrant our State Society really is! Microsoft WORD is the only program needed Training is provided. The current editor has been in the position for three years now. Contact George Lippphardt or the editor for more information or to volunteer. For more information or programs about C.A.R, send an to: ascarsrpres@gmail.com or ascarsrcorrsec@gmail.com. Dear Compatriot, Warren Alter to Run for Secretary General I am excited to announce my candidacy for Secretary General The Society showed its confidence in me this year by electing me Treasurer General. I would be honored to continue my service and leadership in the SAR as your next Secretary General. The Secretary General maintains the records of the activities of the executive committee, trustees, and national SAR Congresses; coordinates the SAR Headquarters staff operations; compiles officer and committee reports for distribution at meetings; and oversees meeting registration. As State Secretary of the Arizona SAR for the last nine years, I have done these duties and others on a state level. As Secretary/Scribe for eight years on the George Washington Endowment Board I did similar tasks for that respected group. I have always been a detail, systems oriented person; which will serve us well. However, the office of Secretary General is far more than just administrative. It is a leadership position, second only to the President General. The Secretary General has to support, assist, and be a valuable aid to the President General. I have been honored to work closely over the years with our President Generals in my role as Inspector General and now Treasurer General. I have held leadership positions at all levels of this organization; Chapter, State, District and National. My formal education includes a Master s Degree in Organizational Management. My career, 39 years in Law Enforcement, included over 22 years in command and management positions of a 1500-member department. I have prepared and accepted leadership positions my entire life; in youth organizations, government employment, non-profit groups, criminal justice task forces and initiatives, and especially in SAR. I have never served in any capacity where I didn t step forward, volunteer, and often take on additional tasks in order to serve better. I always made it a point to learn my job, as well as learn other positions that would support the organization as a whole. I have continued that practice in SAR. Take time to read my flier, look at my qualifications, and consider what you know about me. I value my reputation of being a hard worker, honest, and a man with integrity. I am committed to continuing to make this organization the best it can be. I have always devoted my time, resources and support to further our goals and mission. Just as we did last year, my wife Nancy and I will be visiting many of your states, districts and national meetings. I look forward to getting to know more of you personally, and for you to get to know me. Individual Compatriots, State Societies, Chapters and Districts may endorse candidates for General Office. Endorsements may be mailed by postal or electronic means to the Chairman of the 7

Nominating Committee PG Thomas Lawrence; provided that such endorsements are postmarked (or ed) no later than February 1, Assist me in continuing my service and leadership in SAR as Secretary General by providing your support, endorsement, and if a delegate at the 2017 Knoxville Congress, your subsequent vote.
