1 TUCSAR BUGLE March 2017 The TUCSAR Bugle is a monthly publication (except during the months of June, July, and August when there will only be a special summer edition published sometime after the National Congress) of the Tucson Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. It is published at the first of the month and will be distributed by the 7 th of each month by for those members with and USPS for those without. Articles, suggestions, and ideas are solicited and welcome please sent them to the editor, Bill Aurand, E Rainbow Meadow Dr, Tucson, AZ or wraurand1@cox.net Visit our Tucson SAR Chapter Website at: A Message from the President Rick Collins Compatriots, This organization reaches so many people. Much of that is behind the scenes or without fanfare. Last Saturday the Chapter received very public recognition when it dedicated a flag pole at our spiritual and color guard headquarters, the Tucson Presidio. Sidney Brinckerhoff was eulogized Saturday. Sid had been a Son, though he was no longer current, and he was considering enlisting his grandson in our organization. He was director of the Arizona Historical Society and ran it in years that are remembered as the golden years. He was a recognized historian and veteran. He supported and invested in many charitable organizations. Jewish Rabbi; Lt George Fox, Methodist Minister; Lt Clark Poling, Dutch Reformed Minister and Lt John Washington, Roman Catholic Priest. The Torpedoed ship was the U.S.A.T. Dorchester which sank on February 3, The 4th Cavalry Regimental Band provided appropriate music and Taps; a Rifle Salute was given by the Tucson Detachment 007 Marine Corps League. Our organization honors so many worthy people, and it is what drives our service. Whether it is JROTC or veterans or law enforcement, we demonstrate a real commitment to our community. It is a legacy we can be proud of. I urge all of you to become part of this service, to step up as your ancestor did. Be counted and be a part of a truly proud tradition. The Law Enforcement Ceremony is April 15. Please show these law enforcement awardees that we have their backs. Demonstrate our support of the dangerous and unappreciated work they do. Rick Collins (The SAR Contingent, Right to Left. Gerry Lawford, Tom Sorenson. Christopher Francis, Sandy Lawford, John Bird, Marcia Aurand, Al Niemeyer, & Bill Aurand) The Immortal Four Chaplains Memorial in Tucson A ceremony honoring four chaplains, who gave up their lives in a torpedoed WWII ship so that others might live, was held in Kino Veterans Park, Tucson on Sunday, 6 February The Tucson Color Guard, consisting of William Aurand, John Bird, Christopher Francis, Gerard Lawford, John Lyons, Albert Niemeyer and Tom Sorensen and DAR members Marcia Aurand and Sandra Lawford, had the honor of placing a Wreath at the Four Chaplains Memorial Wall. The four Chaplains remembered were: Lt Alexander Goode, (The Color Guard group photo) TUCSAR BUGLE 1
2 February State Meeting Recap By Al Niemeyer An AZ SAR Board meeting/luncheon and Installation of Officers was held on February 11th, 2017 in Casa Grande which was well attended by Tucson Chapter members. Tom Sorensen, who was not in attendance, was designated the Compliance Officer at the installation ceremony. The State President's gavel was passed on from Steve Miller to Steve Monez. (The DAR Marker on Sentinel Peak (George Lipphardt receives Tucson Chapter Streamer from Warren Alter) A Special DAR Historic Marker By Max (Kachina Society) Did you know that Sentinel Peak in Tucson was named because Indians and early settlers used the peak as a signal station to alert others of approaching enemies? In 1775 when the Presidio San Agustin del Tucson was being built, sentinels were stationed on the peak to watch for raiding Apaches. The Daughters of the American Revolution placed an historic marker on the peak in 1933 to commemorate the significance of the peak s signal station. In 1910 a 160-foot-tall block A was built by students from the University of Arizona on the east face of the mountain. This led to Sentinel s Peak s other name, A Mountain. (Warren Alter receives Certificate of Appreciation from Robert Rearley of Barry M. Goldwater Chapter) (Bill Aurand receives Patriot Medal and Certificate from Steve Miller) TUCSAR BUGLE 2
3 Tucson Chapter Color Guard fires Salute for the El Presidio DAR Flag Retirement Ceremony El Presidio Chapter DAR Regent Sandra Lawford and chapter members performed a Flag Retirement ceremony at the Marana Library Park on Thursday, 9 February Assisting were members of the Tucson Chapter Color Guard who also fired a flintlock salute to cap off the ceremony. Firing the flintlocks were Rick Collins, Gerry Lawford and Al Niemeyer. The Need At this present time there are no monuments or museums in the Tucson representative of contributions Black Americans made in settling Southern Arizona and the West. The Purpose To preserve and recognize the important contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers who were stationed in Arizona. Raise awareness of the contributions that the Buffalo Soldiers made in settling the Southwest, Arizona and their connection to Tucson, AZ. To recognize the contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers in protecting the nation in a time of war. Establish a suitable memorial to honor the Buffalo Soldiers, and showcase their exploits in the Southwest and war campaigns. (Informal picture of DAR Member Penny Brown and Color Guard Members Gerry Lawford and Rick Collins) (The proposed Memorial for Tucson) (Group photo of DAR El Presidio Chapter attendees together with Tucson Chapter Color Guard members) February Tucson Chapter Meeting The Era of the Buffalo Soldier An excellent meeting occurred this February 25 th when author John Langellier gave a talk about the Buffalo Soldiers which was interesting, engaging, and presented with his unique wry humor which enhanced the enjoyment of it all. These professional fighters were an important part of our American heritage with eighteen earning the Medal of Honor during the Indian Wars. Afterwards Trooper Jon Covington of the GSAAC in Tucson talked briefly about the Tucson Buffalo Soldier Memorial being planned and asked for support on acknowledging their sacrifice. Consider helping out their fund raising for this overdue memorial. See this URL for more information. Focus on Local History In 1848 Tucson was home to 509 citizens. After the Confederates fled in 1862 the southern Arizona population dropped by a third as sympathizers retreated with the troops or moved to Sonora. In southern Arizona, until the 1880s, it was expected that half of all children would die before the age of five. By 1804 soap was an item had in surplus. The clean community sold soap around the region. From 1779 to 1781, a wet period, small pox ravaged the frontier. It was actually better to be on the edge of civilization during the epidemic. Until the 1820s it was illegal in New Spain to own English ceramics. In % of Tucson s population died by gunshot. Very metropolitan! In 1906 Arizonans voted on joint statehood with New Mexico. The measure was defeated 16,265 to 3,141. TUCSAR BUGLE 3
