Jimmie Lackey Newsletter Fall, 2012 From the Executive Director: Vicki Olson As we near the end of 2012, we do so with sadness at the passing on November 25th of HAMS Trustee Emeritus, COL David M. Peters, USA, Retired. COL Peters remarkable contributions to his country and to his community are touched upon In Memoriam on page 2. COL Peters will be greatly missed by his fellow members and friends. Our Society has been very active in support of the US Army Museum of Hawaii having supported Living History Day in May, sponsoring the Annual Golf Tournament in June, and organizing the Community Day so generously supported by Lend Lease. Lend Lease brought nearly 50 of their employees and subcontractors who donated their expertise, materials and in kind services conservatively valued at over $50,000. The entire exterior of the Museum was painted, a gallery floor was painted, old carpeting was removed, walls were removed to improve the new general purpose room and expand a room that will eventually become a gallery, and electrical outlets were installed as part of the project. We deeply appreciate Lend Lease s enormous generosity! (See p. 3) With the opening of the general purpose room HAMS has also reached out to the Warrior Transition Brigade and to JROTC for the development of an education program. Our Trustee Frank Boas is leading this effort. With the generous bequest of our late President, MG Herbert E. Wolff, the new lobby exhibit was completed. It has already become the place for tourists to pose for pictures! A special thank you to Trustees COL (Ret.) Walter Ozawa and COL (Ret.) Gerry Silva for making the Ihe Award Breakfast in honor of Karl Kiyokawa the event to get out of bed early for! Also, a big Mahalo to COL (Ret.) Jimmie Lackey for taking the wonderful photos included in this newsletter. (See p. 5 7) On Dec 10, HAMS treated Museum volunteers to a wonderful Holiday luncheon at the Hale Koa. Mahalo to Mike Egami and Marie Ea for organizing the event and the recognition of our dedicated family of volunteers. Also, a special Mahalo to Fran Kramer whose efforts continue to raise the standard of each newsletter publication. Jimmie Lackey On November 25 th, HAMS lost a Trustee Emeritus with the death of David M. Peters. David lived a very full and caring life marked by his long and notable military career, his many contributions in the public sector after retirement, and his warm and giving role as a family man. David M. Peters David entered the world on August 6, 1923 on Nu uanu Street, Honolulu, the Territory of Hawaii. His ancestry is Norwegian, Chinese and Hawaiian. His early years were spent on Maui where his father was the island s first mortician and his mother later opened a beauty shop. Upon graduation from Maui High School at Hamakuapoko he became the first person from the Island of Maui to be appointed to the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, New York. Graduating in 1946 from USMA with a bachelor s degree in engineering, COL. Peters commenced his military career as an Infantry 2 nd LT. at Fort Benning, Georgia. For the next 30 years he served his country as an Infantryman, commanding at all tactical levels, to include two combat commands in Vietnam -- a "C" Detachment of Special Forces and subsequently as a Battalion Commander with the 4th Infantry Division. He later commanded the 1 st Brigade of the 3 rd Infantry Division in the 1970 s in West Germany. His years of service also included -- to list only a few -- an early tour in Japan as a platoon leader with the 11th Airborne Division, command of three companies and a mortar battery at Fort Campbell with the 101 st Airborne Division, a combat tour in Korea with the 187 th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, as a Plans and Policy Officer in Italy with Southern Command, and in Belgium as the senior assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. He culminated his illustrious career in Hawaii as the Professor of Military Science at the University of Hawaii. Peters, Ms. Vicki Olson, Ambassador James Moriarty In 1978 he became a Trustee of the Queen Lili uokalani Trust, where he served for 29 years including 10 years as Chairman; has served as the President of the Hawaii State Society while living in Washington, D.C.; was the first Treasurer and Director of Alu Like; and was the Treasurer of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs Education Foundation. He is past president of the Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club; a member of Mamaka Ai alo, the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce; and an Ali'i of the Royal Order of Kamehameha. David was married in Tokyo to the former Miss Joan Sabin in They were married for 33 years until Joan s death in In 1989 David wed Mary Melekahana Awai Kapaona in Honolulu, Hawaii. David was the proud father of a son David Jr. (now deceased) and two daughters, Lauren Moriarty and Diane Peters-Nguyen. Mele and David had eighteen grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all.

3 HAWAII ARMY MUSEUM SOCIETY Page 3 House Cleaning and Fix Up: Lend Lease and Companies Help Big Time Text & Photos by Fran Kramer On September 20 th, Lend Lease observed their Community Day by giving a facelift, both inside and out, to the US Army Museum of Hawaii. Veterans Days 2012: A Book Signing and Special Visitors Text & Photos by Fran Kramer On Veterans Day, November 12th, a book signing of the manga 100th/442nd written by Stacey Hayahashi (pictured at right in white hat) and illustrated by Damon Wong was held at the museum to honor veterans of the two famous units. Museum visitors and veterans alike perused the 30 page comic book which documents the 70 year journey of the soldiers before, during and after World War II. At far lower right in the white shirt, George Nakasato, former President of the 442nd Veterans Club, shares a story with author Pierre Moulin. Copies of the manga can be purchased at the Museum Gift Shop. During the week of October 1 6, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society held its annual convention at the Hale Koa Hotel. Many of the Medal of Honor recipients took the opportunity to visit your museum, including recipient George Sakato pictured in the blue shirt in this photo. HAMS Executive Director, Vicki Olson, served as the Education Chair for the convention and with the assistance and support of President, GEN (Ret) David A. Bramlett and COL (Ret) Walter Ozawa, organized the visit by fifteen Medal of Honor recipients to six local schools as part of the Medal of Honor Society Foundation s Character Development Program. It was a remarkable day, and a once in a lifetime experience, for the students and the faculty of each participating school.

4 HAWAII ARMY MUSEUM SOCIETY Page 4 Recognizing Our Volunteers: A Christmas Luncheon at the Hale Koa Text & Photo by Fran Kramer On December 10 th, HAMS and Museum Curator, Mike Egami, hosted a Christmas Luncheon to recognize outstanding volunteers and show appreciation for the work that all the volunteers have done. Besides the good food and excellent music performed by Art Kalahiki, presents and raffle prizes were distributed. A World War II veteran with over 30 years of service in the Army, Burl clocks in at the front desk each week to welcome our visitors.
