1 June, 2017 Volume 18, Issue 6 G.W.R.R.A., REGION H, TEXAS DISTRICT, CHAPTER W Chapter TX-W Director Cindy Harris Howdy All, Somehow June crept up on me and summer is here. The heat is on and the afternoon showers have begun. I don t know about you but how do we get so busy. Of course Lynn and my problem is we somehow don t know how to say No. I guess that when it comes to GWRRA and the Safety Programs we do enjoy teaching them. Both of us have been working on getting up-to-date on some of our classes to teach in Texas and so it is keeping us going in all different directions. We are now Certified Instructors for the Trike Class so I m hoping that the Chapter s will take advantage of us and schedule some classes. I had never ridden a Trike before and I learned so much doing the class and I had a really good instructor (Rodd Polk) giving me great tips on how to ride one. I had so much fun that I told Lynn that one might be in our future LOL. This weekend I head over to Louisiana to get my Recertification for the ARC class. They always treat you like royalty and I am looking forward to the class. I see they have had a lot of rain but it looks like we might have a weekend without some. Every time Lynn and I teach one of the GWRRA classes we always learn something new or a new technique on how to ride an exercise. It is just amazing to watch the rider s at the beginning of the class and how much they have progressed through the course. If it has been a while since you have taken any of the classes offered by GWRRA, whether it be a range class or a classroom class, it always gives you more insight into riding. I know our Chapter has not been on a group ride in a while. I believe every time we set one up it either rains or most of us are unable to attend. I was pondering about meeting up and maybe go bowling some afternoon. I know it is not a motorcycle ride but it gets us out and together. We might have to challenge the women against the men. My other idea was to go play miniature golf and then go to dinner somewhere. Any suggestions would help. If you would like to post a ride just send it out to the GWR- RA Chapter W Group. Steve Wilkening, our newsletter editor, would like you to take pictures and send them in if you are on a group ride with the Chapter or any other Chapter s. You can look up the other Chapter s in the area and if there is a ride that would interest you I know they would be happy to have you join them. After all we are all part of GWRRA. Hope you all have sent in your registration forms for the Wing Ding this year. It doesn t get any closer to us than having it this year in Dallas. Lynn and I will be attending and hope to go on some of the rides in that area. They also are going to offer lots of classes so check it out and if something interests you sign up early. I know some of them fill up fast. If you have any suggestions for restaurants for our Planning Meetings during the month I would be very appreciative for a new restaurant to try out. The first currently at Rudy s BBQ, Katy Freeway, Katy, TX (I-10 just east of Mason Rd.). The second will move month to month so see our calendar. The first is our regular chapter meeting while the second meeting is an informal planning meeting/social gathering. Meetings are held at 7:00 P.M. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. 8 VOLUME 18 ISSUE 6 JUNE, 2017 PAGE 8 FLEXING OUR WINGS A LITTLE TEXAS HISTORY Some June Texas Events June 7th, 1876 On this day in 1876, construction began on what was to become a permanent major military installation in northeast San Antonio. Citizens had long desired to secure a permanent military post. Over the years the army had leased many small areas of the city, most notably the Alamo and a plot where the Gunter Hotel now stands. A formal proposal made in 1870 was met with political opposition from Secretary of War Belknap. After his resignation in 1876 a contract for construction was let to the Edward Braden Construction Company. The quadrangular fort with only one entry gate was completed in In 1890 the post was designated Fort Sam Houston. Since that time Fort Sam Houston has grown to an installation of several thousand acres with hundreds of permanent structures. In 2000 it was host to many of the United States Army's major commands. June 8th, 1969 On this day in 1969, Houston Intercontinental Airport officially began operations. As of 12:01 that morning, it replaced Hobby Airport, which ceased commercial flights. (Hobby was reopened to commercial traffic a couple of years later.) Some 80,000 visitors attended the opening ceremonies. The new airport had its origins in 1957, when the Civil Aeronautics Administration recommended that the city of Houston replace the overloaded Hobby Airport. By 1963 planning for a $125 million facility, on Houston's north side, was under way. The new airport opened only after a succession of eight projected opening dates. By 1972 it was apparent that IAH needed many changes. The terminals were not adequate, the runways needed strengthening, the terminal peoplecarrying systems were in need of major repair, and the parking space was far too small. A third terminal was completed in the early 1980s. Plans for a fourth were scrapped in favor of a $95 million international facility, which opened in In acres, Houston Intercontinental is the nation's second largest airport, behind Dallas- Fort Worth. June 13th, 1940 On this day in 1940, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the $25 million appropriations bill for the Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi. Construction began on June 30, and the dedication was held on March 12, The station, at Flour Bluff, eventually occupied 20,000 acres in three counties. It initially trained naval pilots, navigators, gunners, and radio operators. By 1948, when the station became a permanent military installation, it was home to the Naval Air Advanced Training Command. The precision flight team the Blue Angels was headquartered there from 1949 to In 1959 the navy converted the major repair facility to the army's Aeronautical Depot Maintenance Center, while the navy continued to train flight crews for multiengine land and sea planes. In 1986 the station's airfield was named Truax Field, in honor of Lt. Myron Milton Truax, United States Navy. In 2001 the base served as home to several navy commands, including the Chief of Naval Air Training.
