1 Endowment Opportunities Endowed Chairs Ball Chair in History The Russell C. Ball Jr. '44 Chair in History was established in 1998 with gifts from Russell C. Ball III '84 and his family in memory of his father, Russell C. Ball Jr. '44, who was a lover of history, outstanding athlete, two-term member of the School's Board of Trustees, and recipient of the School's Distinguished Alumnus Award in Buck Chair in Music and the Performing Arts Established in 1998 with gifts from two generations of Buck family alumni, Mr. and Mrs. J. Mahlon Buck Jr. '42, Mr. and Mrs. William C. Buck '46, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander K. Buck '49 and Mr. and Mrs. James M. Buck III '77, in memory of Mr. and Mrs. J. Mahlon Buck. It was the family's desire to recognize their parents' and grandparents' lifelong love of music and the performing arts. The Class of 1954 Chair in Language Established in 2004 to celebrate the Class of 1954's 50th Reunion, the income from this endowment fund provides a perpetual source of operating support for the salary of one member of the language department faculty. The Haverford School Chair of Rowing Established in 2015 by an anonymous donor, this endowed fund supports the salary, benefits, and related costs of the Head Rowing Coach at The Haverford School. The occupant of this endowed Chair shall serve as a role model on and off the river and is entrusted with the special task of molding young men of character through discipline, hard work, and teamwork in rowing competition. Endowed Faculty Funds The Carmen Mateos-Hirshman Fund for Teaching Excellence in Foreign Language Established in 2015 by Taine and Jennifer Pechet in honor of Carmen Mateos-Hirshman, beloved Spanish teacher and Mock Trial coach, this fund supports excellence in foreign language instruction by providing support for faculty compensation, enrichment, and professional development. This fund is intended to help support and encourage a teacher with the characteristics that made Carmen Mateos-Hirshman an inspiration to the boys during her years at Haverford. The Class of 1962 Faculty Enrichment Fund As stated in Haverford's Strategic Vision, the School's goal is to recruit, develop, and retain faculty with the vision, ability, compassion, and commitment to inspire and deliver a challenging educational program. Haverford's teachers need to possess the flexibility to respond to students' needs as they prepare to live and work in an increasingly interconnected and complex world, and model a growth mindset through their use of research, experience, and evaluation that informs not only how they teach, but what they teach. The Class of 1962 Faculty Enrichment Fund will support Haverford's professional development program for faculty. 1
2 The Edward E. Ford Foundation Fund for Upper School Faculty Enrichment Established in 1994 by a grant from The Edward E. Ford Foundation, this fund's income enables Upper School faculty to take courses, attend conferences and workshops, and undertake summer travel for educational purposes. The G. Dickson "Pop" Garner Teaching Excellence Award The fund provides for an annual award that serves to encourage and reward excellence in the instruction of mathematics. The award is chosen by the top 10 math students in VI Form, in coordination with the Division Head and the Headmaster. The General Endowment for Faculty This fund supports faculty salaries and professional development, enabling the School to attract and retain the very best teachers. The Preparing Boys for Life Teaching Excellence Award Established in 2001 by anonymous parents wishing to express gratitude to outstanding faculty, this fund provides faculty bonuses and it encourages and rewards excellence in teaching. Faculty from each division are recognized by awards for their accomplishments and efforts. The Yass Family Endowment for Faculty Enhancement Established in 2010 by Jeff Yass, then a member of the Board of Trustees, and his wife, Janine, parents of Robert H. Yass '08 and Douglas A. Yass '10, this fund supports faculty salaries and professional development, enabling the School to attract and retain the very best teachers. Endowed Program Funds The Class of 1958 Fund for International Understanding The rubric for this fund was substantially revised in 2014 with the approval of the fund donors to reflect the current global studies program. The primary mission of this fund is to give Haverford School students the opportunity to travel abroad to create cross-cultural connections and to deepen their knowledge of global issues covered within the The Haverford School curriculum. Income from the fund supports short (one- to two-week) exchange programs, travel-study programs, a global studies elective with a travelstudy component, global studies professional development opportunities for faculty, and annual recognition of up to five Severinghaus Global Scholars. The Friends of Haverford School Rowing Endowment for the Crew Program Endowment for the crew program established in March of 2016 by the Friends of Haverford School Rowing (FOHR), this fund provides operating budget funds for the crew program at The Haverford School, primarily to support the operations and maintenance of the boathouse. The General Endowment for Athletics - Athletic Endowment Fund In 2009, this fund was established to be used to support the athletic program over and above the yearly budget allocation as determined by the Director of Athletics, Headmaster, and Chief Financial Officer. Unused funds in any one year will be reinvested in the fund's balance. 2
3 The Haverford Scholars Fund Established by the Class of 1961 on the occasion of its 50th Reunion, The Haverford Scholars Fund affords students from high-need backgrounds fuller access to a Haverford School experience through funding for supplemental expenses, mentoring, and enrichment support. The Language Program Endowment Fund Gifts to this fund enhance the language program. The Leadership Program Endowment Fund Established in 2015 through a gift from the Chappell Culpeper Family Foundation, this fund provides annual operating support to the leadership program of the School. The McFarland Family Endowment for American History Established in 2016 by George C. McFarland Jr. '77 and his wife Betsy McFarland, this fund supports excellence in American History instruction by providing support for programs and for faculty compensation, enrichment and professional development. The Monique Monceaux Global Studies Endowment Fund Established by Peter J. Clough '66 in memory of his wife, Monique Monceaux, who helped to inspire his lifelong love of language learning, the fund provides annual operating support to the global studies program of the School with a priority for support of language immersion opportunities through student travel, exchanges, and elective study. The M. Yetter Schoch '25 Enrichment Center Fund This fund was created in memory of M. Yetter Schoch '25 by his wife, Elizabeth Bowden. Income from this fund supports the Upper School Enrichment Center. The Yoh Endowment Fund for Lower School Athletics Established in 1998 by Harold L. "Spike" Yoh Jr. '54 and his wife, Mary, the fund's income supports Lower School athletics with the goal to foster excellence in physical education, athletics, and fitness programs for students in pre-k through fifth grade. Endowed Lecture Funds The Davis R. Parker Memorial History Lecture Fund Established in 1989, with initial gifts from Fourth Headmaster Leslie R. Severinghaus and Davis Parker's wife, Jane Parker Scott, this fund honors Fifth Headmaster Davis Parker, 1966 to 1987, for his passion for history. Proceeds are used to invite distinguished scholars in American history to speak and also participate in a day of classes with Haverford students. The Edward R. Hallowell Literary Lecture Fund Established in 1998 with a lead gift from Tom McCabe, then a member of the Board of Trustees, and his wife, Anne, parents of Thomas B. McCabe IV '00, to honor Edward R. Hallowell's decades of teaching English at Haverford. The lecture series brings distinguished men and women of letters to Haverford to read from their work and spend a day with the students in readings and discussions. 3
4 The Joseph T. Cox Servant Leadership Symposium This fund was created in 2010 by Mr. and Mrs. F. Scott Addis '74 to recognize the "servant leadership" of Eighth Headmaster Joseph T. Cox, Ph.D. from 1998 to The fund is used to bring a guest lecturer to the School at least once a year to speak about leadership. The lecturer will be selected by a panel of Upper School boys and faculty. The William Edward Gwinn '86 Memorial Fund for Science Established in 1984 by D. Byrd and Mary S. Gwinn in memory of their son, William Edward Gwinn '86. Proceeds from the fund help to underwrite the Science Department budget and promote excellence in science education through an annual science lecture by a visiting scholar, a faculty award for teaching excellence in the sciences, and a book prize awarded annually to a member of the IV Form. Endowed Tuition Assistance Funds The Benjamin Franklin Scholarship Endowment Fund Established in June 2015 by William C. Yoh '89 and Kelly G. Yoh, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School, with a preference for boys who exemplify Franklin's innovative spirit, restless pursuit of learning, and love of the Philadelphia region. The Chappell Culpeper Foundation Scholarship Fund Established in 2015 through a gift from the Chappell Culpeper Family Foundation, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need, with a preference for new students entering fifth grade or higher, who have an interest in and aptitude for engineering, math or science. Once selected, students may remain Chappell Culpeper Scholars throughout their time at the School. The Christopher Stanton Wolcott '73 Memorial Scholarship Fund Established in 1990 by Robert W. Wolcott Jr. '44 and his wife, Margaret, in memory of their son, Christopher Stanton Wolcott '73, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need. The Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund Established in 2009 on the occasion of the Class of 1959's 50th Reunion, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need, with a preference for a boy who is academically talented, active in various school and community activities, and exhibits strong character and good citizenship. Preference will be given to younger boys from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. The recipient is referred to as The Class of 1959 Scholar. The Class of 1960 Scholar-Athlete Fund This fund was created in 2010 in honor of the Class of 1960's 50th Reunion to provide need based financial support. Preference is given to Upper School students, who are not necessarily the best students or the finest athletes, but who sincerely attempt to make the most of their natural abilities in both areas. The recipient is a student who demonstrates intellectual inquisitiveness, dedication to athletic excellence, and commitment to performing to the best of his abilities in all areas. 4
5 The Class of 1979 Scholarship Fund Created in 2009 in honor of the Class of 1979's 30th Reunion, this scholarship supports a student of need, with a preference for students from middle class families and, when applicable, giving priority to descendents and relatives of Class of 1979 alumni. Through this scholarship the class also seeks to honor the memory of their friend John T. Swope '79 who passed away prior to the class's 30th Reunion after having made his contribution to the fund. The Donald Brownlow Memorial Scholarship Fund The Donald Brownlow Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 by the Class of 1959 and other generous donors. This fund is used to support students of need, with a preference for boys who have demonstrated a love of history that Don inspired and nurtured during his 55 years in the classroom. The Donald J. McBride Scholarship Fund The Donald J. McBride Scholarships are merit-based awards granted to Haverford School students in III Form through VI Form. The scholarships reward talent, achievement, and promise in the arts, athletics, and the classroom, with particular emphasis placed on character, leadership, and contributions to the community. The Edward and Sarah Glavin Scholarship Fund Established in 1997 by family and friends in honor of Edward's 70th birthday, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need, with a preference for middle income families from Delaware County, so that other young men may be afforded the opportunities of a Haverford School education. The Eileen Stiefel Buckwalter Scholarship Fund Established in September 2015 in honor of Eileen Stiefel Buckwalter, a beloved teacher at The Haverford School, by Barbara Klock, Salem Shuchman, and their children, Michaela, Isaiah '23 and Jaiden '23, this fund provides tuition assistance to students who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School, with a preference for boys who reside in the city of Philadelphia. The General Endowment for Tuition Assistance Gifts to this fund provide the School with guaranteed funds for tuition assistance to support eligible boys who would otherwise not have the opportunity to attend The Haverford School. The George L. "Porgie" Smith '67 Scholarship Fund Established in 2012 in memory of George "Porgie" Smith, the first African-American student to graduate from The Haverford School matriculating to Lafayette College, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need, with a preference to an African-American student who exhibits qualities reminiscent of George. The H. Laddie Montague Jr. '56 Scholarship Fund Established in 2010 by H. Laddie Montague Jr. '56, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School. 5
6 The Hazel M. Keith Scholarship Fund Established in 2000 by Robert E. Keith '59 in honor of his mother, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School, with a preference for boys in singleparent households. The J. Mahlon Buck Jr. '42 and Elia D. Buck Fund Established in 2012 through a bequest from J. Mahlon Buck Jr. '42, the purpose of this endowment fund is to enable qualified Upper School boys with a strong sense of citizenship and the potential to make a special contribution to the community to attend The Haverford School, regardless of their financial circumstances. In addition to providing each qualifying student's calculated tuition assistance grant, these scholarships provide a special merit award to better meet the demonstrated need of the family. Recipients are known as the Buck Scholars. The J. Mahlon Buck Jr. '42 Choral Scholarship Fund Established in December 2007 by the Buck Family, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School, with a preference for a boy with a love of singing and who is an inspiration to the School community. The James K. "Kip" Taviano '13 Scholarship Fund Established in 2016 by the family, classmates, teammates and their parents, coaches, teachers, neighbors and friends of James "Kip" Taviano '13 in his loving memory, this fund provides tuition assistance to a student of need who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School, with a preference for a deserving student-athlete who exhibits strong character, friendship, citizenship, and sportsmanship in all that he does, just as Kip demonstrated in his life. The John E. Shaw III '44 Memorial Scholarship Fund Jack "Spider" Shaw received a scholarship in order to attend Haverford and his family wished to provide other young men with the same opportunity. Established in 2007 by his wife, Patsy, and his four sons, John Jr., Jeffrey '75, Michael '78, and Scott '80, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School, with a preference for boys who demonstrate integrity and friendship, and embrace the value of a well-rounded education. The John F. Stoviak 69 Scholarship Fund The John F. Stoviak '69 Endowed Scholarship was created in 2014 in recognition of the remarkable legacy of the leadership of John F. Stoviak '69 as chairman of the Board of Trustees from 2008 to It is merit based and granted to deserving young men who, like John, came to Haverford in the Upper School. "Stoviak Scholars" will possess the qualities that distinguish John as a leader and a person: dependability, devotion, courage, honor, determination, optimism, self-reliance, and work ethic. The John J. Gallagher Jr. '69 Memorial Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 2005 by family, classmates, and friends in memory of John J. Gallagher Jr. '69, to provide tuition assistance to students of need, with a preference for a VI Form student. A star in football, basketball, and lacrosse, John was an inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame honoree. He was also a dedicated student with strong leadership, communication, and people skills. He displayed the same qualities in college and law school and in his career as a corporate law attorney, federal prosecutor, and assistant U.S. attorney in New York City. 6
7 The John L. "Doc" Thomas '23 Memorial Scholarship Fund Established in 1992 with a founding gift from William C. Buck '46 and his wife, Laura Thomas Buck (sonin-law and daughter of Doc Thomas), and subsequent support from friends and family members, this fund honors the memory of John Lewis Thomas '23. The fund is used to support students who possess the qualities that Doc exhibited, including sportsmanship, congeniality, and an eagerness to help others. Additional funding for this scholarship comes from the annual Doc Thomas '23 Golf Classic. The Jordan T. Baumeister '05 Endowed Scholarship Fund The Jordan T. Baumeister '05 Scholarship is a merit-based award granted to Haverford School students in I Form through VI Form. It was established by the Jordan Baumeister Scholarship Foundation in This scholarship rewards talent, achievement, and promise in wrestling with a particular emphasis placed on character, leadership, and contributions to the community. The Joseph T. Cox Leadership Scholarship Fund Established in 2013 in honor of the retirement of Eighth Headmaster Joseph T. Cox, Ph.D., the Joseph T. Cox Leadership Scholarship awards are merit based and granted to Haverford School students in Forms III through VI on an annual basis. These scholarships will supplement a qualifying student's tuition assistance grant in order to better meet the demonstrated need of a family. The Kelby Harmon '04 Memorial Scholarship Fund Established in 2000 by family and friends to honor the life of Kelby Harmon '04, this fund is divided into a tuition assistance fund from an anonymous donor and a "book fund" for other school-related expenses. The fund provides support to students of need, with a preference for students of color from within the city of Philadelphia. The Kirsopp Family Scholarship Fund Established in 1987 with a bequest from Mary Kirsopp, mother of Edgar Peebles "Peter" Kirsopp '46, this fund provides tuition assistance to a student in need who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School. The Maguire Scholarship Fund Established in 2016 by Chris and Ellen Maguire, parents of Christopher J. Maguire '16 and George T. Maguire '19, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School. The McCabe Emergency Scholarship Fund Established in 1996 with an initial gift from former Trustee Tom McCabe and his wife, Anne, parents of Thomas B. McCabe IV '00, this fund provides tuition assistance to families who encounter unanticipated financial challenges during the school year. The McCulloch Family Scholarship Fund Established in 1996 by Don and Carolyn McCulloch, parents of A. Donald "Tripp" McCulloch III '96 and Timothy B. McCulloch '02, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School, with a preference for boys who demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit in their activities at the School. 7
8 The Michael J. Cunningham Memorial Scholarship Fund Established in 2001 in memory of Michael J. Cunningham, a faculty member and coach at Haverford from 1976 to 2001, this fund provides tuition assistance to Upper School students of need, with a preference for boys who embody the qualities and values Mike represented, including kindness, leadership, and athletic ability. The Neil Buckley Memorial Scholarship Fund The Neil Buckley Scholarship was established by a group of alumni and friends in 1992 in conjunction with wrestling coach Neil Buckley's 600th win. "Memorial" was added in 1994 after Neil's untimely death after 48 years of teaching. This fund provides tuition assistance to students of need, with a preference for a boy who possesses the qualities Neil helped so many to develop, including self-discipline, sportsmanship, a competitive spirit, and strong work ethic. The Reader's Digest Endowed Scholarship Fund Established in 1986 by Dewitt Wallace/ Reader's Digest, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School. The Robert F. Powell Jr. '62 Memorial Scholarship Fund Established in 1996 by family members, classmates, colleagues, and other friends in memory of Robert F. Powell Jr. '62, the fund provides tuition assistance to students of need, with a preference for children of alumni. The Rohr Family Scholarship Fund Established in September 2014 by Peter and Megan Rohr, parents of Samuel V. Rohr '12, Benjamin A. Rohr '13, and Peter A. Rohr Jr. '15, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School, with a preference for a boy with a love of academics and a passion for community service. The Steppingstone Scholars Fund Established in 2015 by Jack and Deb Lynch P'10 '12 and family, this fund will provide tuition assistance to deserving Middle and Upper School students of promise with priority given for Steppingstone Scholars. The Timothy J. O'Mara '85 Scholarship Fund Established in 2014 by Joe and Helen O'Mara in memory of their son, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need who would otherwise not be able to attend The Haverford School, with a preference for boys who demonstrate the qualities and values that Tim represented, including kindness to others, a love of life, and community spirit. The William L. Klink Jr. '55 and Class of 1955 Scholarship Fund Established in 1994 with a bequest from William L. Klink, Jr. '55, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need. The Class of 1955 chose to incorporate their 50th Reunion class gift into this fund. 8
9 Endowed Unrestricted Funds The General Endowment for Unrestricted Use Gifts to the School s general unrestricted endowment provide the most flexible support for Haverford. The Hugh Trumball Adams '31 Fund This fund was created through the bequest of Hugh Trumbull Adams '31, realized in 2010, with the direction that the income be used only for general purposes. Restricted Funds The following funds have not yet met the $100,000 level. Additional gifts are especially welcomed. The Class of 1964 Scholarship Fund This fund was created by the Class of 1964 in celebration of their 50th Reunion. The purpose of the fund is to enhance the general unrestricted endowment of the School. If the fund reaches the minimum balance of $100,000 within five years, it will be reconstituted as an endowed scholarship. The Class of 1965 Scholarship Fund This fund was created by the Class of 1965 in celebration of their 50th Reunion. The purpose of the fund is to enhance the general unrestricted endowment of the School. The Class of 1996 Rafael Laserna Fund for Outstanding Teaching Established by the Class of 1996 in their graduating year to honor outstanding teaching at Haverford and the memory of teacher Rafael Laserna, who served Haverford from 1969 to1995. The fund's income supports an annual award to a teacher recommended by student vote, with remaining income allocated to faculty enrichment and graduate study. The E. Russell Allen Jr. '72 Memorial Scholarship Fund Established in 2010 by Constance J. Allen in memory of her husband, E. Russell Allen '72, this fund provides tuition assistance to students of need. The Honor Code Project Fund This fund supports the maintenance and implementation of the Honor Code system at The Haverford School, including organizing an annual Honor Conference with neighboring schools. The Jack Berrettini '09 Scholarship Fund The Jack Berrettini '09 Scholarship was established in 2008 in memory of Jack. This fund provides tuition assistance to students of need, with a preference for boys who demonstrate the qualities and values that Jack represented, including kindness to others, a love of life, and community spirit. The Michael Stairs Concert Series Fund This fund was established in 2013 to honor Michael Stairs, founding conductor of The Notables, and his 25 years of musical teaching from 1987 to 2012 at Haverford. 9
10 The Richard and Hilary Cooper Fund for Supplemental Financial Assistance Established in 2000 by Richard and Hilary Cooper, this fund allows Haverford to award need based grants for costs over and above tuition needed by students to pursue their Haverford education. The R. Stockton Stocky Taylor Jr. 63 Fund Established in 2009 upon the death of Stocky, who suffered a paralyzing injury in a wrestling accident in In 2008, Stocky received the Athletic Hall of Fame Special Recognition Award for his participation on the Haverford wrestling team. The Severinghaus Library Fund Created in 2008, this fund supports library operations. The Service Learning Fund Established in 2000 with a gift from Kathleen and Nicholas Chimicles, parents of Peter J. Chimicles '04 and Nicholas A. Chimicles '19, for the purpose of supporting community service learning through the service projects performed by Haverford students. The William A. "Will" Corey '08 Memorial Scholarship Fund The fund was created in 2004 in memory of Will Corey '08 to provide a tuition assistance award to a rising VI Former at Haverford. The award recognizes a member of the class who embodies the traits and characteristics that Will personified in his life as a Haverford School boy. The recipient demonstrates kindness, humor and spirit, support of other members of the community, a love of learning, and courage in the face of adversity. 6/29/
