3 Nate and Eva Garfinkle Endowed Scholarship The Nate and Eva Garfinkle Scholarship honors and memorializes Physical Education alumnus Nate Garfinkle (B.S., 1931) and his wife and Temple alumna Eva (B.S., 1933). As a teacher in the School District of Philadelphia for more than 30 years, Nate Garfinkle has influenced thousands of students. A founding member of the HPERD Alumni Association, Nate was an active proponent of the dream of Russell Conwell: to provide a quality education to those who can least afford it. The Nate and Eva Garfinkle Scholarship builds on the maxim expressed by Dr. Conwell, Do what you can with what you have, where you are today. The scholarship consists of a $1,000 cash award. The candidate must be a full-time student eligible to enter her/his sophomore, junior, or senior year of his or her program track, pursuing a teaching career in Health and/or Physical Education. Consideration is given to the candidate s academic standing, professional participation, service to Temple University, evidence of a healthy lifestyle, and financial need. Part-time students are not eligible for this award. must also submit a typed, double-spaced 500-word biographical sketch and goal statement that demonstrates how his or her activities and lifestyle parallel those of Nat and Eva Garfinkle. Interviews with the scholarship finalists may be required. Applications must be submitted to the Department Coordinator by the last Friday in February.

4 The Agnes L. Stegmuller Scholarship Agnes Aggie Stegmuller (Health & Physical Education, B.S., 1945; Ed.M., 1948) completed a 40-year career in Physical Education and athletics, as a teacher, coach, administrator, and sports official. She retired in 1983 as Department Head of Health and Physical Education and Athletic Director at Bartram High School in Philadelphia. Her career has been active and full of honors, including induction into the Temple Hall of Fame and recipient of a Certificate of Honor and the Eugene Fitz Dixon Inspiration Award. The scholarship consists of a $1,000 tuition scholarship, half awarded in the fall and the remainder in the spring. The candidate must be a full-time undergraduate student, majoring in Kinesiology, and have completed at least one year in the Department of Kinesiology. The candidate must have earned a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0. The candidate must demonstrate financial need. Part-time students and those on full-tuition scholarships are not eligible. The candidate must have demonstrated participation in related community activities. The candidate must have demonstrated successful involvement in professional development. must also submit a typed, double-spaced 500-word biographical sketch and goal statement. 5 Alice Cavanaugh Memorial Scholarship The Alice Cavanaugh Memorial Scholarship has been endowed in memory of Alice Cavanaugh-Huestis (Physical Education, 1951) by her family. This scholarship is awarded annually to one outstanding undergraduate majoring in Kinesiology who, like Alice Cavanaugh, exemplifies excellence in scholastic achievement and dedication to school, community, and professional activities. Depending on fund availability, the scholarship consists of up to one year s tuition and a cash award for books and related expenses. At the discretion of the selection committee, the scholarship is renewable for a second year. The candidate must be admitted to one of the professional tracks in the Department of Kinesiology. The candidate must have completed at least 30 credits with at least two semesters of full-time study remaining to degree completion. The candidate must have a grade point average of at least 3.0. Consideration is given to the candidate s scholastic achievement, participation in school and community organizations, involvement in activities related to professional aspirations, and financial need. Among otherwise equally qualified candidates, preference will be given to teacher education students. must also submit a typed, double-spaced 500-word biographical sketch and goal statement. 6 Dr. Carole A. Oglesby Endowed Scholarship The objective of this fund is to provide scholarship grants in honor of Dr. Carole A. Oglesby. Dr. Oglesby has been a respected professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Temple University for many years and is world renowned in the field of sport psychology. The scholarship grants are intended to benefit one or more graduate students who are matriculated in the Kinesiology program at Temple University. Approximately $5,000 for tuition or for research purposes (half awarded in the Fall and the remainder in the Spring). Candidates must have applied for acceptance or been accepted into the graduate program within the Department of Kinesiology. Recipients must be matriculated in the graduate program within the Department of Kinesiology. Candidates must demonstrate scholarly and leadership promise in the topic of African-American women in sports. recommendation from teachers, community members, or peers must be attached to the application, and should address the criteria for the award. 7 The Donald R. Hilsendager Endowed Scholarship Fund The objective of this fund is to provide scholarship aid to academically talented graduate students majoring in Kinesiology. The fund was established in honor of Dr. Donald R. Hilsendager who retired in 1996 after 33 years of service to Temple University. During his tenure, he served as Chair of the Department of Physical Education from 1978 to 1980 and Dean of the College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance from 1981 to The scholarship consists of a $500 cash award. Candidates must be matriculated graduate students in the Department of Kinesiology. 8 The Kendrick, Clemmer, Phillips Endowed (KCP) Scholarship Fund The objective of this fund is to provide scholarship aid to academically talented undergraduate students who are also members of the men s and women s intercollegiate gymnastics teams at Temple University and majoring in exercise sciences or pre-medicine in the Department of Kinesiology in the College of Education. The scholarship consists an award of at least $500. Candidates must be matriculated undergraduate students majoring in exercise science or pre-medicine in the Department of Kinesiology and a member of the men s and women s intercollegiate gymnastics team at Temple University. Selection of one member of the men s intercollegiate gymnastics team and one member of the women s intercollegiate gymnastics team will be based on academic merit who have achieved the status of a senior in the Department of Kinesiology with at least a 3.25 overall grade point average. must also submit a typed, double-spaced 500-word biographical sketch and goal statement. 9 Dorothy McQueen Memorial Award Fund The Dorothy McQueen Memorial Award Fund has been endowed in memory of Dorothy McQueen, an honored member of the Temple Hall of Fame, and outstanding athlete, coach, mentor, leader and teacher by friends of Dorothy McQueen. This memorial award fund is awarded annually to one outstanding undergraduate majoring in Kinesiology who was a graduate of any of the high schools within the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania School District. Depending on fund availability, a $400 cash award will be given annually. The recipient shall be a graduate of any of the high schools within the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania School District. The recipient shall have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities among his or her peers. The recipient shall be a junior or senior pursuing a career in teaching. must also submit a typed, double-spaced 500-word biographical sketch and goal statement. Interviews with the award finalists may be required. Applications must be submitted to the Department Coordinator by the last Friday in February.
