1 Novembe r 19, 2010 ANNUAL UPDATE OTA Education Foundation, Inc., 555 Dixon Road, Toronto, Ontario M9W 1H8 education.foundation@ontruck.org ( 416) , Ext. 243 A Message from the Chairman As chairman of the OTA Education Foundation, I am very impressed with the strides that we have made in 2009 and 2010 in terms of the Foundation s growth and development. With the invaluable support of generous donors throughout the Ontario trucking industry, we have begun to deliver on our vision: to provide a more accessible, substantial, and sustainable structure, that supports the academic endeavours of children of the men and women who keep our industry moving. Our two most recent annual fundraising drives have allowed the Foundation to reach out to Ontario s trucking industry in ways that we have not been able to in the past. Increasingly, more companies, their employees and their children, are aware of the Foundation, and our unique industry-focused scholarship program. Over the course of a short two year period, we have been able to nearly double our scholarship awards to post-secondary students. In 2010, the Foundation handed out 45 scholarships compared to 23 in Perhaps most telling is the fact that in each of 2008 and 2009, only 19 companies sponsored scholarship applications, whereas in 2010, there were nearly 50 companies sponsoring more than 75 applications. Of course, our work would not be possible without the outstanding support of the trucking industry. In spite of difficult economic circumstances, Ontario trucking companies came through by supporting our Donation Challenge in 2009, as well as our Double-Up Donation Challenge in And of course, our campaign donation matching partner deserves our recognition (if only we could!) for making both of these campaigns possible and for helping us to encourage the trucking industry to support its Foundation. Needless to say, our many scholarship recipients who are studying everything from electrical engineering and eco-system management to pre-med and dentistry are the big winners. On behalf of our board of directors and our scholarship winners, I would like to thank all of you who have helped us make a difference by making a donation to the Foundation. Your support is truly appreciated. Inside This Issue J. O. Goodman Winner 2 C. V. Hoar Winner Scholarship Winners 3 Endowed Scholarship Winners 4 Matching Campaign Donors 5 Our Board of Directors 6 Scott Smith Chairman, OTA Education Foundation Foundation Chosen as Charity for Memorial Golf Tournament For the second year in a row, the OTA Education Foundation was selected to be the official charity of the David Virgo Memorial Golf Tournament and Silent Auction. The annual event, which is organized by David s widow, Debbie and other family members, serves as a tribute to the late David Virgoe, a truck driver and truck hero who lost his life after taking evasive action to avoid oncoming
2 Page 2 OTA Education Foundation Annual Update November 19, 2010 traffic caused by street racers on Highway 400 in June, Two annual tournaments have generated nearly $6,800 in donations, which are used to fund scholarships earmarked for children of workers in the Ontario trucking industry. This is what David would have wanted said Debbie Virgoe in 2009 when the Foundation was chosen as the official charity for the first time. This is exactly the type of charity that we want this tournament s proceeds to go to. The Foundation appreciates the support of Debbie Virgoe and her family, and encourages golfers and duffers alike to attend the 5 th annual David Virgoe Memorial Golf Tournament and Silent Auction on September 17, Once again, proceeds will go to the OTA Education Foundation. J.O. Goodman Winner Appreciates Generosity of Trucking Industry The OTA Education Foundation awarded the 2010 J. O. Goodman Scholarship to Kevin He, a North-York based student who is now attending the University of Waterloo where he is working towards a double degree in computer science and business. Kevin s application was sponsored by Yale Industrial Trucks Ontario where his mother works in accounting. Kevin was chosen as the outstanding first-year university applicant by the OTA Education Foundation s Selection Committee. J.O. Goodman applicants are assessed on their high school academic achievement, service to community and volunteer work, extra-curricular activities, as well as an essay that answers a specific question on trucking. Kevin has given over 1,500 hours volunteering by instructing and mentoring young people in a youth program that promotes leadership and citizenship. Kevin joined Cadets Canada at the age of 12, where he believes he was offered a world of opportunities. He also attained Honour Roll status in each of his four years at high school, and is a recipient of the Lieutenant Governor s Community Volunteer Award for Students as well as the Don Valley West Member of Parliament s Award for Citizenship and Community Engagement. My parents are willing to sacrifice everything for my education, wrote He in a letter thanking the Foundation for his scholarship. Between loans, scholarships, part-time, and co-op employment, I hope to finance at least three-quarters of my degree myself. He also extended his appreciation to the OTA Education Foundation, the Scholarship Selection Committee, and the donors that made this award possible. The J. O. Goodman Scholarship Award winner is selected each year from all qualifying scholarship applications from students who are entering their first year post-secondary studies at a recognized university. C.V. Hoar Winner Sets Sights on Teaching Special Needs Children The OTA Education Foundation awarded the C.V. Hoar Scholarship to Rebecca Bailey, a former student of Manitoulin Secondary School. Rebecca is now attending Cambrian College in Sudbury where she is embarking on a two-year program to become a Development Services Worker. Rebecca s scholarship application was sponsored by Manitoulin Transport, where her mother currently works as a purchasing coordinator. Rebecca was chosen as the outstanding first-year college applicant by the OTA Education Foundation s Selection Committee. C.V. Hoar applicants are assessed on their secondary school academic achievement, service to community and volunteer
3 Page 3 OTA Education Foundation Annual Update November 19, 2010 work, extra-curricular activities, as well as an essay that answers a specific question about the trucking industry. Rebecca was an active member of her school s S.H.A.R.E./Go Green Committee, which, with only 10 student members, raised over $18,000 to send to less fortunate children in other countries. The money was used for food, fresh water, education and health care. She helped to organize youth baseball in her community for three years, and worked as a peer teacher in a grade 9 class. Rebecca has been a definite asset to this class and she has contributed to the success of her students noted Chatal Desbiens, a Manitoulin Secondary School teacher in a supporting letter for Rebecca. Ultimately, Rebecca would like to attend Teacher s College so that she can be a special needs teacher. She hopes to be able to make a difference in the lives of many special needs children. The C. V. Hoar Scholarship Award winner is selected each year from all qualifying scholarship applications from students who are entering their first year post-secondary studies at a recognized college OTA Education Foundation Scholarship Winners Announced The following students each received an OTA Education Foundation University Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 for Each application had to be sponsored by a trucking or trucking-related company (also listed) for which one of the student s parents work.
