Board of Directors Role of the Board: To demonstrate leadership relative to the objectives of the annual ECF campaign; provide guidance to the cabinet members; and to facilitate a smooth, auditable and successful campaign. 4 IBM Canada Surpasses ECF Goal To provide an avenue for IBM Employees and IBMers give where they live throughout the year. We did it! IBMers from across Canada pulled together to surpass our Employees Charitable Fund (ECF) target and raise $3.3 million for Canadian charities. In addition to the money raised by individual pledges, IBMers raised thousands of dollars as they put the fun in fundraising. Special thanks to the location and function coordinators who volunteered countless hours and planned so many creative and exciting events at their respective locations. You could literally come up with an A to Z list of highlights from exciting fundraisers held across the country, including: auctions, bake sales, candy grams, donation jars, executive pie-in-the-face delivery, food drives, golf tournaments, halloween parades, ice cream sales, jelly bean counting, keepsakes from garage sales, lunch-hour movies, minute to win it, name that tune (you get the picture.) To close off another successful ECF campaign more than 700 employees and their families from the Greater Toronto Area converged at a Silver City theatre where they enjoyed an early morning movie, had popcorn for breakfast, and celebrated the results results of the campaign. The headline says it all. We surpassed our goal. And it happened because of your hard work. Success wasn t only measured in dollars raised but also fun, employee engagement and volunteerism. Without your involvement and commitment, our ECF campaign would not be one of the largest, most successful, national employee campaigns in Canada. Your engagement, in every location and function, ensures our campaign reaches the entire IBM Canada team coast to coast. Thank you for everything you have done throughout our campaign. Joe Sehl ECF Executive Chairman
Meet Dave Welling Making a Difference Celebrating IBM ers in our Community. GB Territory Services Leader, is one ofibm s ECF Heroes and volunteers with Boys To Men Canada, a relatively new organization modeled after the best practices of organizations such as Boy Scouts and Big Brothers. Boys To Men provides year old boys, who are struggling with adolescence, the opportunity to attend a rite of passage adventure weekend to learn positive qualities such as integrity, courage and respect from male adult mentors. From that point, the boys become journeymen for 2-3 years under the leadership of group mentors such as Dave while they enter into manhood. Dave has been involved with the Toronto Chapter since it opened in April, and is passionate and committed to the program. He is also a member of their Board and attributes much of his success to the resource tools he uses on On Demand Community ODC. Boys To Men is a registered Canadian charity and recipient of IBM s Employee Charitable Fund (ECF) program. Dave Welling (center, green shirt) at a recent Boys to Men adventure weekend.
Meet Effron Esseiva Meet Gene Palazzo Effron Esseiva, IBM Industry Architect working out of the Burnaby office, decided to do something different with his life in 2007 by volunteering as an auxiliary officer for the RCMP. Auxiliaries go through a rigorous four month training program before beingsworn in as Peace Officers. Gene Palazzo, IBM Events Manager, has raised money for Princess Margaret Hospital for the past 12 years by running the Annual Ernie Tourney golf tournament, named after Ernie Maki, Gene s late father-in-law who lost his battle to cancer in A big part of Effron s volunteer work includes instructing children through the D.A.R.E. program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) on the pressures and dangers of doing drugs. In addition, he is authorized to accompany regular RCMP members on patrol, perform other policing functions. Gene s inspiration has generated over $36,000 in cash donations to Princess Margaret to be used for cancer research. Effron, an ECF Hero volunteers with the RCMP approximately 160 hours per year. In June, he received special recognition from the RCMP for his outstanding work and contribution to the DARE. The annual golf tournament is held near Barrie, where Gene and his father-in-law built a lovely cottage on Lake Simcoe in the mid-1990 s. IBM Canada has been one of the official sponsors for the tournament and has also supported Gene through IBM s Matching Grant Program with all proceeds going directly to the Princess Margaret Hospital. Gene Palazzo is truly one of IBM s ECF Heroes!
Meet Michael Lucas Michael Lucas, an IBM Senior Java Developer in Winnipeg and his wife, Kristen, decided to turn their personal tragedy into something positive. In April 2009, their 6 month old daughter, Georgia, passed away shortly after being diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a genetic disease that is the leading cause of genetic-related deaths of children under the age of 2. In response to this devastating loss, ECF Heroes Michael and Kristen, organized Georgia s Journey of Hope, an event to raise money for Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy Canada (FSMAC). The fundraiser is a family event which is like a giant birthday party in honor of Georgia. Last year the event raised over $10,000. With concentrated research, their hope is that a cure could be found in less than 5 years. For more information visit: The Lucas Family shortly before Georgia passed away. Meet Nick Biase Nick Biase, Sales Leader for ibm.com, gives back to his community by raising money and awareness for the York Region Aids Foundation. For the past four years, Nick has been very involved in the planning and organizing of Taste For Life, an event that encourages local York region residents to visit select restaurants whereby 25% of the proceeds are donated to the York Region Aids Foundation. The one day event takes place in April and includes volunteers like Nick being at every restaurant; talking to people to receive donations and manage silent auctions. Participation by residents and local businesses has grown steadily and this year alone, over $20,000 was raised for Aids research. IBM s Nick Biase celebrating Taste for Life with staff at Cedar Grill Restaurant in Newmarket, ON. Nick Biase, early champion of Taste For Life and now an ECF Hero was recently awarded a $1,000 IBM Community Grant for his fine volunteer efforts!
IBM Partners for Haiti Disaster Response As IBM assists earthquake victims, Canadian IBMers make a difference. In response to the pressing need for assistance, the IBM Canada Employees Charitable Fund (ECF) has authorized a contribution of $50,000 to World Vision Canada. The Government of Canada is matching dollar-for-dollar selected contributions to Canadian Registered Charities assisting the relief effort, making this contribution from ECF equivalent to $100,000 from IBM employees. The theme of ECF for the past two years has been Give Where You Live, reflecting IBMers commitment to the communities in which we live and work says Joe Sehl, National Chair of ECF. This contribution also underscores the fact that we truly do live in a global community, and all IBMers want to be able to help the people of Haiti in this time of need and distress.
Parents of IBMer Thankful for Haiti Relief Efforts Robert Nonez was one of four children born and raised in Haiti who emigrated to Canada to study Engineering at University of Ottawa. Today, Robert works as a Cognos software developer for IBM Canada in Ottawa. Recently, Robert spoke to IBM Corporate Citizenship and described the ordeal his parents endured with the Haiti earthquakes last January. My parents were extremely lucky. They lived in Canape-Vert, just outside of Port-Au-Prince. Their home was one of three that was left standing after the earthquakes although they lived in a tent for weeks afterwards fearful of entering their home, said Robert. I lost an Uncle and my wife lost a cousin. I don t know of anyone in Haiti who did not lose relatives or loved ones. Robert added that Haitians are very proud people and have a hard time asking for help even in the worst circumstances. When I ask my extended family what they need they say nothing, we have everything we need, but in fact, this translates into we need everything and we don t know where to start. The massive worldwide Relief Efforts gave much needed support for the people of Haiti. The relief efforts gave people hope and made Haitians feel part of the world community. With no functioning government and widespread chaos, people would not have survived without the worldwide assistance. Through IBM Canada s Employees Charitable Fund (ECF), employees contributed $70,000 to World Vision Canada which was matched dollar-for-dollar by the Government of Canada..
Did you know? n 100% of ECF donations goes directly to the designated charities as IBM covers all administrative costs. n IBMers can choose to donate to any of the over 80,000 registered charities during the annual ECF Campaign. n each year approximately 1500 charitable organizations share in excess of $3 Million thanks to the generosity of IBM Employees and Retirees. n 92,000 hours were volunteered by IBM employees and retirees to help charities in their communities in. n since 2000 IBM Employees and Retirees have donated over $37 Million dollars to Canadian Charities via the ECF and Matching Grants programs.
