EDITORIAL PRESIDENT S MESSAGE I t is an honour and a privilege to be the Editor of the PRC ebulletin for another Rotary year. It is one of the pivotal roles in the Club which is both challenging and demanding. I am also grateful for the kind contributions of PP Dato Muslim Ayob who has assisted me tremendously to help win the Best Bulletin Award and the Best Electronic Bulletin Award in RY T hank you for having the confidence in me to lead the club. To begin with, I would like to thank PDG Dr Paul Lee, Past Presidents Council Chairman, PP KH Low, PP Sim Bee, PP Tai Chin Peow, PP Phang, PP Mike Tung and all the Past Presidents who stepped forward as advisors. I thank them for their time and patience with me. Just some statistics, we are now left with 44 members and hopefully by end of this Rotary year, we will hit the big 5 again. My vision is to take the Club forward in an orderly manner. Why I say orderly? The ebulletin is one of the best medium of communication among the Club members. It is a means to disseminate pertinent information such as President s Message and Announcements, Programme Speakers, Diary of Events in the Club and the District, Birthdays and Wedding Anniversary Celebrations of Rotarians and Anns, Club Proceedings, Reports from the Board of Directors and Board Appointees, District News, Rotary Information and Rotary International & The Rotary Foundation News. On a lighter note we have some Rotarians who will contribute inspirational stories, anecdotes, jokes and puzzles. In order for the ebulletin to be a success I would appreciate the kind cooperation of every member to submit timely messages, announcements, reports, news, projects, and photos before Thursday of every subsequent week. If you have any ideas to make this a GREAT ebulletin again please share your suggestions with us. We would like to make this ebulletin an enjoyable read for all. Warmest Regards PP Mike Tung To start off with, some housekeeping rules to follow: Whatsapp group chats are solely only for announcements. It is not used as a channel to belittle a member. If someone wants to speak to someone, please take it private Anyone violating this rule will automatically be bumped out of the group I want to promote a friendly culture in this Club. No quarrels and no fights. Quote: Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of mind. Unquote. In short, when you are happy, you live longer The theme for this Rotary year is Light up Rotary. The significant projects planned for this Light Up Rotary year are as follows: Club Service Director Jeffery Yap. Lots of fellowship activities planned. A family outing and fellowship dinners are lined up. This aim is to bring all the Rotarians together as 1 Pudu Rotary Club. Vocational service Director Elaine Tan Beautify my Home. This is a project aimed to create an opportunity for ID students to experience and to service the community with their creative skills in decorating the Homes. 3 to 5 Homes will be indentified for this project. Materials will be provided for them and the students will decorate the Homes to their best abilities. So here, we are appealing for sponsors for (Continued on page 12) Rotary Club of Pudu Page 3

He raised a very substantial sum for scholarships and the book was launched by the then Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Arifin Zakaria (now Tun.) He is married to Ann Elaine and they have 3 children Louisa, Sean and Andrew. SPEAKER S TEXT W here It Began It began here, when I took over the daunting task of the helm of our robust Club from my very good friend IPP Aaron Ong. together with our sister club RC Singapore West and RC Dhonburi on the Women Prison (Tri Club) project, the latter won us the best International Service District Award... Due to my background as that of a liquidation lawyer, in years in Rotary I have always taken the attitude to having fun as the main objective. In my year as the President of the Rotary Club of Pudu my original intention was to do just that. When we started the year, we had a budget of about RM 40,000 (USD 12,000.) So when I was summoned by the Past President Council I told them, this year we ll just have fun and no projects at all. Funds Raised For the Year Then I realised the wonders of the Rotary Club of Pudu. Throughout the year, funds came pouring in. The year end tally showed that we have raised a total of about RM 380,000 (USD 115,000), I was profoundly surprised... Awards For the Year Funds poured in, we applied them to many meaningful projects. One of them together with our sister club RC Mandaluyung on the Typhoon Haiyan project; another Looking back at the Rotary year, we have won EIGHT District Awards. Six BEST district awards; one First and one Second Runner up. All the glory should go to the Past District Governors, Past Presidents for their advice; and the hard work of all board members and chairpersons. Thanking Here I would like to thank all Pudu Rotarians for the opportunity to lead, Pudu Rotaractors for your support, Pudu Interactors for a wonder performance this year. I must thank the sister club members of, in alpha order, RC Dhonburi, RC Hong Kong Harbour, RC Mandluyung, RC Singapore West and RC Songkhla for looking after us when we visited you in the past year and for the great fellowship we shared. Hand Over I now hand over the affairs of the Club to our new President Daisy Chiu, who will lead our Club to greater heights. Rotary Club of Pudu Page 5

DISTRICT NEWS DG S CALENDAR From: Baskaran Syamala <swe_tha@hotmail.com> Date: Mon 30/6/ :09 PM Subj: WINGS OF ROTARY Dear Rotarians, In the course of its growth over the last 109 years, Rotary has given birth to many other organizations and partners in service both within and outside of Rotary. Rotary has never been static but have always responded and reacted to the situations and demands of the society and Rotarians themselves. As a result, our Rotary family seems to be getting bigger with each passing year. Let us have a look at some of them. 1. Inner Wheel - On 15th November 1923, 27 Rotarian wives met in UK to discuss the possibility of an independent ladies group run on Rotary lines. Then on 10th January 1924, the Inner Wheel was officially formed as a club in UK with the objectives to foster friendship between Rotarian wives and to carry out service. It came to be known as International Inner Wheel in 1967, with a current membership of 100,000 members in 101 countries. It is one of the world's largest women organization and has representations at the UN. The founder is Mrs Oliver Golding (Margarette Owen) with the HQ at Altrincham, Cheshire, UK. 2. Early act (Early Action) - School-wide service clubs for primary school students from the age of It is sponsored by one of the local Rotary clubs in which the school is located. The mission and operation of Earlyact, are closely linked to the ideals of Rotary and provides the foundation and natural succession into Interact. 3. Interact (International Action) - School wide Service clubs for young people from the age of The first Interact club was formed in 1962 and the first club is at Melbourne, Florida, USA. Today, there are more than 11,000 Interact clubs worldwide with a membership of 250,000. Rotarians have been involved with the youth even before Interact. Their work with the Boy Scouts and other Boy's associations are well known. They had even formed clubs like Ro club, meant for High school students and Yrator (rotary spelled backwards) for outstanding high school students before Interact was formed. 4. Rotaract (Rotary in action) - Fellowship Through Service" - Rotaract are service clubs for young adults from The first Rotaract club was formed on 13th March (Continued on page 14) Rotary Club of Pudu Page 13

DISTRICT NEWS (Continued from page 13) 1968 and the first club was the Rotaract club of North Carolina, USA. Currently, there are 8,000 clubs in 155 countries with a membership of about 184,000. Even before Rotaract was officially formed, Rotarians have been sponsoring similar organizations for young adults since the early 1920's. Among some of them are: Twenty Thirty clubs - started in 1922 in Sacremento, California, USA. Round Table clubs- started in 1927 in Great Britain and Ireland for young men from Apex club - started in November 1930 in Australia with the first club at Geelong, for young men up to the age of 40. Unisserve club (India) Orbis club (S. America) Rotor club (S. Africa) Paul Harris Circles ( Europe) Quadrant clubs (USA) Youth Exchange (IYE), RYLA, Rotary Peace Fellowship, Rotary scholars, members of the Vocational Training teams (VTT) and members of earlier programs like Ambassadorial scholarship, Recipients of University Grants for Teachers, Group Study Exchange (GSE) and Rotary volunteers. Each year, thousands of people participate in Rotary programs. As an alumni, they are part of an extended network of people who share a common bond of improving lives in their communities and abroad and are valued members of the Rotary family. We Rotarians, wherever we maybe, with or without our realization, in small or big ways are doing something somewhere everyday in making this a better world. Be Rotary Proud!! Regards Baskaran. 5. Rotary Community Corps (RCC) - Also known as Rotary village corps are a group of non-rotarian men and women who share Rotary's commitment to service. Under the guidance of a sponsoring Rotary club, dedicated RCC members put their own skills to work to improve the quality of life in their communities. RCC was initiated by Past RI president A.T. Caparas in Rotary Global Networking Groups - This group comprises of 2 categories. Rotary Fellowship Groups Rotary Action Groups Rotary fellowships were created to unite Rotarians in friendship and to enjoy their favorite recreational or professional interests on an international basis. The first ever fellowship was the fellowship on shared interest in the language Esperanto, but the oldest surviving fellowship is the Yachting fellowship that began in There are currently about 60 odd fellowships with around 33,000 members comprising Rotarians, Spouses and Rotaractors. Rotary Action Groups are fellowship groups with a service orientated focus. There are a sizeable of these groups and among the popular ones are those who focus their attentions on Diabetes, Dental volunteers, micro-credits, drug abuse, AIDS, Blindness, Hearing regeneration, Malaria, water and sanitation etc. Rotary Alumni - Rotary alumni is the broad term for all the individuals who have experienced Rotary through various programs including Interact, Rotaract, International Rotary Club of Pudu Page 14

DISTRICT NEWS ROTARY SCHOOL IN CAMBODIA BY RC PETALING JAYA I n our bid to improve the educational facilities for the poor rural villages in Cambodia, the Rotary Club of Petaling Jaya had commissioned the construction of the Rotary Petaling Jaya School of Kampot, which was declared open by the H.E. Khoy Khun Hour, Provincial Governor of the Province of Kampot together with members and friends of RCPJ who attended the Opening Ceremony of the school on 7th June This school comprises of 4 classrooms, one of them converted into a computer lab with 10 units of computers, and 2 external toilets. This school is estimated to cater for 200 students per academic year, who come from the 4 poor villages close by. and it is our hope that this school will be able to create future doctors, nurses, lawyers, teachers, or even the next Prime Minister!! RCPJ is very honoured that the Cambodian government has ensured that the school is completed within the stipulated timeframe and will be ready to take in students. Martin Luther once said that Education is the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. Education is essential for everyone and it plays such a rudimentary role on our society that we cannot even imagine a life without it. It is an indispensable part of life both personally and socially. Although education has a significant influence in life, the average education is not the same in different areas. I am sure you will all agree with me that without education, life would be disastrous and detrimental. Unfortunately, there are still some places where the inhabitants are almost completely uneducated, causing a serious lack of knowledge. Additionally, every child should be given equal opportunities to learn and study. Because the development of a country depends vastly on the standard of education, I believe the present Cambodian government will do everything in its power to ensure education is made accessible to all. The RCPJ School of Kampot is built and established with the ambition to reach out to the underprivileged and provide them with a platform of education. This project is finally supported by several RCPJ members and a donor. At first we were concern about the financial support for this project, but the support was overwhelming from several people this again is because we all have the same ambition of accessible education to all. The school is able to take 200 students beginning at age 7 to 17. Now that RCPJ has completed the construction of this school, the management of the school will be handled by the Cambodian government as they will then place the right teachers and manage the enrolment of the students. RCPJ is very proud to be of service to the community here Rotary Club of Pudu Page 15

RI NEWS RI PRESIDENT S MESSAGE JULY 2014 I find many traditional Chinese values reflected in Rotary: values of service and responsibility, of respect for family and for others. Sometimes I call Confucius the world's first Rotarian, because even though he died 2,500 years before Rotary was founded, his ideas are very much Rotary ideas. And one of the things he said was: 與其抱怨, 不如改變. In English, you say, "It is better to light a single candle than to sit and curse the darkness." I think that one line sums up the way we in Rotary approach the problems of the world. There is so much difficulty. There are so many people who need help. Many people look at this and say, "There is nothing I can do." So they do nothing and nothing changes. But this is not the Rotary way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one candle, you light one candle and so do 1.2 million other Rotarians. Together, we can do so much more than we could ever do alone. Together, we can light up the world. In , I am asking each of you to light your own Rotary candle and Light Up Rotary together. There are so many ways to Light Up Rotary. I hope many of you will choose to host a Rotary Day, to show your community what Rotary is and what we do. I hope you will involve your Rotaract and Interact clubs in your service, to bring the new generation of the Rotary family closer to Rotary membership. And I hope you will keep Rotary strong by inviting new members into Rotary including your own spouses and family. Perhaps the most important thing we can do to Light Up Rotary together is to finish the job we've been working on for more than a quarter of a century: the eradication of polio. We are so close to our goal. But we will get there only if we keep up the fight, keep up the momentum, and close the funding gap for the polio endgame plan. Light Up Rotary together is our theme for this year, but it is more than just a theme. It is how we in Rotary see the world and our role in it. We believe that no one should sit alone in the darkness. Instead, we can come together, all 1.2 million of us, to Light Up Rotary. This is our goal and my challenge to you. TRUSTEE CHAIR'S MESSAGE - JULY 2014 Goals for a new year. It is an honour and a privilege to serve this Rotary year as chair of our Rotary Foundation. And we should be proud to call it our Foundation, for each day millions of people are touched by the magic of Rotary made possible only by the service and dedication of Rotarians throughout the world. Our Foundation is the engine that drives the Rotary machine. It gives us the chance to see and fulfill the opportunities for service both within our community and internationally. Your Foundation Trustees have set five goals for the year. The first goal is the eradication of the poliovirus from the face of the earth. We have much to be proud of in our efforts to rid the world of this dreaded disease, but we must finish the job. We cannot let up in our efforts. We cannot undo all the good work that has been done in the past. Our second goal is to continue to support Rotary's own charity, The Rotary Foundation, through our contributions. The good that we do is limited only by what we receive. Let us ensure that clubs who have made no contributions to our Foundation do so this year. Our third goal is to ensure the progress of our new grants program by participating in sustainable educational and humanitarian projects. Our fourth goal is to foster goodwill and peace by promoting and publicizing the Rotary Peace Centers program, whose purpose is to create a cadre of individuals dedicated to peace and conflict resolution. Our fifth goal is to emphasise that the responsibility for the future of our Foundation is in all our hands so that we can continue doing good in the world as we endeavor to Light Up Rotary. I look forward to your support. John Kenny Foundation Trustee Chair Gary C.K. Huang President Rotary Club of Pudu Page 17
