Scholarships are cash awards given to students selected primarily on the basis of academic excellence. Some scholarships also recognize extracurricular activities, athletic ability or other achievements. Scholarships may be provided by government, educational institutions or from the private sector. What is a grant? Grants are usually non-repayable awards based on need, provided by provincial or federal governments or private corporations. What is a bursary? Bursaries are non-repayable awards given by universities, colleges, and other sources to students who demonstrate financial need. Source: AHRE It s About Time...to choose a post-secondary education program SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES: 1. Most scholarships require an application in your grade 12 year. 2. Some scholarships are based on academic achievement. 3. Many scholarships require VOLUNTEER experience in school or the community. 4. When completing applications, print clearly or have them typed. Proofread before submitting. 5. Complete all parts of the application. Follow all instructions fully. The following scholarships are available from the Alberta Scholarship Programs. Read over the scholarship application form. Check to make sure you do qualify for the scholarship. Make sure the scholarship is applicable to post-secondary institutions. Check the deadline leave yourself enough time. Figure out all financial requirements. Fill in all questions or boxes. Transcripts you can print from your mypass account Attach any other forms if needed. Provide the person who is writing references with information about you. Try to find at least one reference from someone outside school. Make sure you have signed and correctly dated the forms in black ink. Make sure your application is legible and complete. Have someone proofread the form after you have completed it. Make a photocopy of the completed form and put it in a safe place. Put the correct postage on envelope and put into mail in sufficient time. Phone to make sure it has been received. Allow two weeks from time of mailing. English 20-1, 20-2, Francais 20, 23 or 20-2, and At least two of the following: - Math 20-1 or Math Science 20 - Biology 20 - Chemistry 20 - Physics 20 - Social Studies 20-1 or any one language other than the one used above at the Grade 11 level Any 2 other courses at the Grade 11 level with a 3 credit value including those listed above as well as combined C.T.S. courses. C.T.S. Courses Three one credit modules can be combined and used as an option at the Grade 10 & 11 level. Five one credit modules can be combined and used as an option at the Grade 12 level. To be combined: all courses must be from the same level, i.e. Introductory, Intermediate or Advanced courses can be from different streams or subject area, i.e. computer courses with welding courses marks will be averaged at the appropriate level CALM 20 can be taken in any grade but will be calculated in Grade 11

The top 10 students, as determined solely on each student s first writing of Diploma Examinations, are recognized as Rutherford Scholars and receive an additional $2500 and a plaque.
