2 1. UMAP Summer Door to Taking place at Toyo University and Niigata University from August 14 27, UMAP Summer Program 2017 has come to an end. With the participation of 22 exchange students from 5 countries (, Myanmar, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand) together with Japanese facilitators, the program was a tremendous success. Choosing the theme Doors to Japan - History and Presence of Japanese Culture, Society and the Environment, UMAP Summer Program 2017 strived to be a bridge between international students and authentic Japanese culture. The two-week program had two phases, with the first week held at Toyo University in Tokyo. The second phase was held at Niigata University in Niigata Prefecture. 1. Program s Agenda UMAP Summer Program 2017 included various lectures and field trips aiming at showcasing the past and present of Japan. The program was successful in delivering contemporary and ancient images of Japan to international students. 3 Program 2017 Japan 2. UMAP Summer Program at Toyo University For some exchange students, UMAP Summer Program 2017 marked their first time to visit Japan. On August 14, the UMAP Summer Program started out with a warm welcome at the International House of Toyo University. During the week that followed, the 22 exchange students and their Japanese facilitators attended lectures on Toyo s campus on the Japanese language, Japanese lifestyles, the roots of Japanese, and Tokyu Railway, a Japanese railway company. The program also included lots of field trips to exciting places in Tokyo, such as Asakusa, Yokohama, Yanesen, and Shibuya. Experiencing Japanese language, lifestyles, and cuisine first hand made a huge impression on the students. Every place they visited gave them another reason to fall in love with Tokyo. 4 1. UMAP Summer Door to 3. UMAP Summer Program at Niigata University To further enrich and diversify the students experiences in Japan, UMAP Summer Program 2017 was also organized at Niigata University in Niigata Prefecture. Travelling to Niigata, UMAP s students rode a Shinkansen (bullet train) for the first time. At Niigata University, the students had lectures in business, international development, sociology, disaster prevention, and environmental protection by distinguished professors. The students also participated in a number of field trips, where they gained lots of practical knowledge and hands-on experience in traditional industries, adaptation of historical values in today s world, and disaster preparation. The field trips brought to life what the students learned in lectures at Niigata University. Summer Program 2018 Preparations are underway for UMAP Summer Program 2018 i to be held in Thailand. The program is scheduled for two weeks, and it will be hosted by three Thai universities (Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok University, King Mongkut s University of Technology Thonburi), and the Office of Higher Education, Thailand. The main theme of the program will be Global Citizenship and it is aiming for a total of 50 participants, including both international and local students. All local expenses will be covered by the four organizations. The program will focus on Thai culture, society, and environment. Through numerous art and cultural outings in both Bangkok and Ayutthaya, students will be able to experience many sides of Thailand during the summer program. Page 4 UMAP Newsletter Vol. 3

International Forum on Student Mobility and Suppor On August 18 and 19, 2017 UMAP, in collaboration with Japan Association for International Student Education (JAISE), held the UMAP International Forum 2017 at Toyo University (Tokyo, Japan). More than 180 professors, scholars, government officials, and other delegates from throughout the Asia-Pacific region attended the Forum discussing Trends and Prospects of Student Mobility and Support in the Asia-Pacific Region. 1. In their keynote addresses, Prof. Christopher Ziguras (the International Education Association of Australia; RMIT University), Dr. Christine Farrugia (Institute of International Education (IIE)) and Ms. Jacquelyn Hoult (Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE)) shared their experiences and perspectives on student mobility. 3. Panel Discussion Following the keynote speeches there was a panel discussion on Future Development of UMAP. In an open and amicable atmosphere, the esteemed panel shared innovative ideas and had a fruitful discussion on 1) Benefits that university networks (such as UMAP) have been providing to our student mobility in Asia and the Pacific, 2) Challenges/limitations those university networks are facing, 3) How we can develop sustainable programs through those university networks, 4) How we should invite possible new members to our university networks, Plenary of the International Forum Panel Discussion Speech by Chairman of Toyo University at the Reception For presentation slides, please refer to Page 6 UMAP Newsletter Vol. 3

International Workshop on August 19, Workshop (August 19) On the morning of August 19, the UMAP International Forum continued with workshops on Why UMAP? ; Meet UMAP Members ; Good Practice of Education and Employability with Career Design. Highlighting ideas made in the International Forum, positioning UMAP in the region, and mapping out UMAP s journey of development, the workshops engaged 60 delegates in defining UMAP s current challenges, showcasing UMAP s strengths, and proposing initiatives for growth. In Workshop Room 1, Deputy Secretary of UMAP IS. Prof. Ashizawa presented UMAP s advantages to UMAP members and prospective UMAP member universities Two UMAP ambassadors, Dr. Min-Ling Yang (left) and Prof. Akira Ninomiya (right) delivered speeches in Why UMAP? in which they analyzed UMAP s values, explored UMAP s opportunities and challenges, and discussed prospects of student mobility and UMAP s future direction. The workshops not only examined different angles of student mobility, but also facilitated the exchange of insightful views for helping youth prepare for their future careers. 2. Excursion to Edo Museum During the afternoon of August 19, the International Forum concluded with a trip to Edo-Tokyo Museum. UMAP would like to sincerely thank everyone who joined us for the UMAP International Forum. Because of your attendance and active participation, the UMAP International Forum 2017 was a huge success. 9 4. Highlights of the 2nd UMAP Board Meeting 2017 The 2nd UMAP Board Meeting was convened on August 17 at Toyo University Group photo with UMAP Board Members 1. Revision of the Pledge of Agreement aiming to increase the number of exchange students Board Members agreed to amend The Pledge of Agreement for student exchange programs. These modifications will enable participating universities to use the UMAP network more flexibly, and more and more exchange students will be able to study abroad through various programs in many countries/territories. The following changes will go into effect on January 1, 2018 without each participating university signing the new revised Agreement. Even though the basic number of exchange students under Program A(Multilateral Exchange Programs) is two per semester, universities will be allowed to send additional students if they accept more than two exchange students in a given semester. These provisions do not preclude bilateral agreements made between any two participating universities that hope to exchange more students. Participating universities will be able to send or accept students to Program B (Bilateral Student Exchange Programs) and/or Program C (Super Short-Term Programs) before they participate in Program A. Establishment of online system for students connection under UMAP in 2018 New online system for student connection will be established in fall The system is necessary for enhancing the transparency and accountability of UMAP programs. Scholarship for exchange students for UMAP exchange students in 2017 Ministry of Education in Taiwan and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Japan provide special scholarships of USD700~750 per month to inbound/outbound students to/from their country/territory for one half long exchange programs in Details for 2018 will be announced after the end of December 2017 on the UMAP website. 10 5. UMAP Activities in 2017 (from March to September 2017) 1. Participation in the APAIE 2017 Conference & Exhibition On March 20-23, 2017, UMAP participated in the APAIE 2017 Conference & Exhibition in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. UMAP set up a booth to promote its activities, and two research groups selected as UMAP Research NET 2016 recipients presented the interim results of their research projects. 2. APQN Conference 2017 On May 26, 2017, Prof. Ashizawa, Deputy Secretary-General of UMAP IS was invited by former Deputy Secretary General, Prof. Angela Hou to give a presentation on UMAP programs to the participants of the Asia-Pacific Quality network (APQN) 2017 in Moscow, Russia. 3. NAFSA Conference & Exhibition 2017 On May 29 to June 2, 2017, Prof. Ashizawa, Deputy Secretary-General of UMAP IS, along with representative members from the UMAP Japan National Committee participated in the NAFSA Conference in Los Angeles, U.S.A. They manned a booth and gave a briefing session on UMAP programs to an audience of 50 people. 4. 6th APEC Conference On September 6th, 2017, Dr. Takashi Sekiyama, Executive Director of UMAP IS, was invited as a guest speaker to the 6th APEC Conference on Cooperation in Higher Education which was held in Vladivostok, Russia. During the plenary session, there was a discussion of new challenges and opportunities for higher education in the Asia-Pacific region. The conference was an excellent opportunity to strongly appeal for further exchange participation from non-umap member countries. 5. EAIE 2017 Conference and Exhibition 6th APEC Conference On September 12-15th, UMAP hosted a booth and presented its programs. In addition, UMAP had meetings with delegates from USA, Australia, Canada, Chile, India, New Zealand, Russia, and other eligible countries to encourage them to join UMAP programs. 6. Publication of UMAP at A Glance In October 2017, UMAP IS released the booklet UMAP at A Glance to present an overview of UMAP. Concise as UMAP at A Glance may be, it is expected to be helpful in escalating UMAP s public relations and enhancing its brand image. The video provides a short introduction of UMAP, UMAP s programs, and messages of UMAP alumni from various countries. The theme is Embracing Diversity, and the program will feature world leading experts, unique social events and an exhibition. 2. Participation in the CBIE s 51st Annual Conference From November 19-22, 2017, UMAP members will attend the 51st annual conference hosted by Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada to recruit Canada to become a full member of UMAP. *For more details of the event: 3. Sharing UMAP students records as alumni UMAP plans to share previous UMAP participants records as alumni on the UMAP website. National Secretariats are encouraged to support UMAP International Secretariat in creating UMAP s promotional tools such as videos featuring UMAP students. 4. Participation in the APAIE 2018 Conference & Exhibition UMAP is planning to attend the APAIE (Asia-Pacific Association for International Education) 2018 Conference from March 25-28, 2018, in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. 12 8. About UMAP Who we are? UMAP is the acronym for the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific. We are an international association of government and non-government representatives of the higher education (university) sector in the Asia-Pacific region. We were founded in 1991 and comprise 35 countries/territories with over 570 participating universities. Our aim is for university students and staff to achieve better understanding of the cultural, economic and social systems of other countries by promoting mobility of university students and staff. What we do? UMAP has been administrating the following student exchange programs and providing research funds to selected research projects by UMAP members. The programs are open to both undergraduate and post-graduate students. 1. Multilateral Student Exchange Program [UME] (One or two semesters long) - Program A Tuition: Participating universities are expected to consider a tuition waiver policy for exchange students for Program A. 2. Bilateral Student Exchange Program [UBE] (One or two semesters long) - Program B Tuition: Conditions for the waiver/non-waiver of tuition fees will depend on the host universities 3. Super Short-Term Programs [SSTP] (One to eight weeks long) - Program C Tuition: Conditions for the waiver/non-waiver of tuition fees will depend on the host universities 4. UMAP Summer Program The UMAP Summer Program is a special summer program during 1 to 8 weeks provided by UMAP. Place and content of the program differs every year depending on the organizer of the program. It started in 2016 as UMAP Discovery Camp 2016 (UDC2016) in Philippines. UMAP Summer Program 2017 was held in Japan with the theme Doors to Japan - History and Presence of Japanese Culture, Society and the Environment. For 2018 s UMAP Summer Program, it will be held in Thailand. 5. UMAP Research Net UMAP Research Net (URN) is a project that aims to promote research networks in the region by groups of two or more researchers from different UMAP affiliated universities who share common research interests. UMAP is providing research funds to selected research projects that are relevant to the goals of UMAP.
