October 10, 2011 Fort Wayne Mayoral Candidates Program I: Tom Henry Last week club members participated in the first of two programs featuring the candidates for Fort Wayne mayoral race in the November 8 election. Incumbent Democrat Tom Henry asked Rotarians to consider three things in evaluating those pursuing the city s highest office 1) the ability to be a good fiscal steward, the ability to create a business-friendly environment, and 3) the ability to provide good city services. Mayor Henry pointed to achievements that included consecutive years of flat balanced budgets, the AA+ rating for the city, the city s ownership of its utilities and cash reserves available to address emergency situations as may arise. Mr. Henry serves as chair of Indiana s Urban Mayors Caucus. He noted that over the last four years there had not been layoffs or reductions in city services in his administration. He recognized small business as the city s largest employer and that Fort Wayne s 5.2% GDP is twice the national average. New single bin recycling has increased residents participation in the program from 30% to 70% and has reduced fees. Fort Wayne will be honored with two awards in Indianapolis this month for the city s accomplishments with recycling. Republican mayoral candidate Paula Hughes addresses our club October 17.

Thank You, Rotary Club of Downtown Fort Wayne! Rotarian Jane McDonald (second from right) from the Rotary Club of Chicago attended our September 26 meeting to thank us for our partnership with her club and the club of Atakpame, Togo in supporting the local school. The Rotary Club of Downtown Fort Wayne opened doors through service by accessing RI funds to complete a project where playground equipment and school supplies were provided to the children of the school. Jane, as a member of the Peace Corps, helped these Rotary clubs provide much needed support to this small West African village. Her attendance at our club meeting was a direct result of our commitment to her village and our support. While contributing to our club s foundation is part of our dues obligations, contributions to the Rotary International Foundation truly fuels the work of Rotary. More about Rotary s international and local foundations can be found in this week s Spin. Gold Standard Recognition to Bill Gabbard! President Mike acknowledges member Bill Gabbard for his work with Rotary s Circle of Hope Clean-Up Day last weekend.

Anonymous Donor Recognizes Two for Club Service Club members Carole Fuller (left) and Sandy Shumaker became our newest Paul Harris Fellows October 3. The ladies were presented with their awards by Dick Conklin. An anonymous donor recognized Carol and Sandy for their service to Rotary. NEW! Rotary Club s Member Vocation Highlight Program President Mike has asked members to reach within and consider promoting their vocation/occupation to the club's membership by participating in the new Member Vocation Profile program. Complete the form at a Monday club meeting (cards will be placed on the tables) or by visiting fortwaynerotary.org and completing the form online. It's an opportunity to enhance the professional, ethical business network that is one of our club's greatest assets. The benefits of promoting your work, vocation, and occupation are increased by participating in this new program. This week's profile: Bob Wearley Bob is a retired USAF pilot, businessman, and jail minister. He works at Commerical Filter Sales and Services Inc. Bob states "after starting out of my garage in October 1986, I have retired from active management and placed by 'bonus son' Jason Daenens as CEO. I can devote my time as a volunteer chaplain in Jail and founding board member of Faith Based Ministry to mentor exoffenders and help them re-enter society with jobs, housing, and mentoring".

Una Bella Sera! Divertimento! Cibo! Amici! (Story and photos by Dave Borgen) WOW! What a wonderful evening it was! The 2011 Fall Harvest Rotary Wine Tasting party held at Brookside, The Bass Mansion on the campus of St. Francis College. Kudos to the fundraising committee for a job very well done on the site selection! Bravo! The event was attended by about 75 Rotarians (Downtown, Anthony Wayne and Rotaract Clubs represented), family and friends. The event was Italian themed and party goers had no shortage of activities to occupy their time. There were hors d'oeuvres, (which I will say were quite tasty), a wine tasting table, exotic Olive Oil tasting, a silent auction and an absolutely stunningly restored summer home to explore and marvel at! A truly wonderful social event and a much needed source of financial support for our club s program and project goals!

There are special thanks galore to pass on: Our event sponsors were: IPFW, Manpower, Commercial Filter Service, 5/3 Private Bank, JH Specialty, Sandy Shumaker and Degreasing Engineers. Auction items were donated by: Candace Schuler, Carole Fuller, Louise Jackson, Mike Kelly, Jeremy Redding, Sandy Shumaker, Irene Walters, Dan Copeland, Mark Carboni, Lisa Waterman, Linda Ruffolo, Holli Seabury, Mary Campbell, Jane Wilks and Randy Roberts. Event Committee Members: Louise Jackson, Holli Seabury, Jason Daenens, Carole Fuller and Candace Schular. Rotarians Day of Work? Work? Really?? (Story and photos by Dave Borgen) The annual Fall River Greenway clean-up was held last Saturday morning. I guess one could debate whether this activity should be classified as work or play? Work is defined as exertion or effort directed to produce or accomplish something; labor; toil. Play is defined as exercise or action by way of amusement or recreation.

On the one hand, you are walking with a trash bag, bending over repeatedly and picking up trash. That would meet the definition or work. On the other hand, you have an absolutely beautiful fall morning, the fellowship of a dozen Rotarians and family, you are walking with a trash bag, bending over repeatedly and picking up trash, and at the end, you go to Coney Island for hot dogs, chips, a soft drink and a whole bunch of laughs. That would definitely meet the definition of play! Well, as they say, One Rotarians work is another Rotarians play (or something like that)! Work or play, thanks to, Bill Gabbard and his wife Sara, Mike Kelly, Dee Hoffman and Allyn and Veronica, Jerry Dahle, Bob Kabisch, Glen Abels, Dave Borgen and Jason Daenens (Jason was an Army of One ). President Mike barking out orders to the troops! If I heard drop and gimme twenty one more time! Work, work, work!
