April 15, 2013 Getting Connected with the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne: It s all about Relationships! Anthony Juliano from The Asher Agency delivered his fascinating presentation LinkedIn In 10 Minutes a Day to the club. He showed how social media can add to productivity, but warned that it s a tool to add to a marketing strategy, not a quick fix, one answer for everyone approach. (Continued on page 4.)

Anthony shared three reasons why LinkedIn is worth company time. 1. It s all about relationships it assists in identifying relationships critical to a business success. 2. It s serious business the average LinkedIn use is a 43 year old, college educated man, earning $107,000 in a senior leadership role. And you won t find any of those silly apps or photo albums found in other social media sites. 3. You can be effective in a reasonable amount of time by building and enhancing current relationships. Anthony then gave us 7 activities we can do in 10 minutes to start getting the most out of LinkedIn minute: To inform your network of your work, update your status with current projects 2. 1 minute: To connect with your network, like another status from your news feed minute: To engage with your network, comment on a connection s status minute: To find out who is interested in your work, review who has viewed your profile minutes: To learn and develop your own knowledge and skill, join a relevant discussion group and post a comment minutes: To enhance an existing relationship, send a message to a connection that you haven t spoken to lately and schedule a face to face meeting with them minutes: To learn about a customer or competitor and keep up to date with what s going on in the business community, review an organizational profile. 10 Minutes, 7 tasks it s that easy! To learn more about LinkedIn, Anthony encourages us to visit his blog at
Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) Greetings Rotarians! Kindly read this quick inquiry on behalf of the RYLA committee. As you know, each year we send high school students down to the Rotary Youth Leadership camp near Lafayette. We normally rent a van which we can get at a reduced cost. However, in the interest of potentially saving more money, I wanted to inquire about an alternative mode of transportation this year. We also typically caravan with the Anthony Wayne and Churubusco Rotary clubs, and the students really like to ride together. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate all students in one vehicle. So, perhaps a bus! Does anyone attend a church or know of a facility that would allow us to use a bus (seating for at least 20) for free or a reduced rate? If you have any connections or resources concerning this inquiry, please pass the information on to me as soon as you can. Thanks! Rotating like crazy, Jeremy Redding Group Study Exchange Meet the Team Monday, April 15, 2013 O Reilly s Pub 301 W. Jefferson in the Harrison 5:30 7:30 pm The visiting GSE Team from Austria (District 1920) will be in attendance for an evening filled with fun, fellowship, and cultural exchanges. Come see how your Rotary Foundation contributions are impacting lives here and around the world! There is a second opportunity to meet the team while they are in Fort Wayne. On Friday, April 19, the Anthony Wayne Club is hosting a social at Pint and Slice (816 Calhoun St.) at 5:30 pm. Please RSVP to Anthony Wayne President, Amber Recker (amber.recker@gmail.com). Anthony Wayne Rotary Challenge 2013 Bill Harris informed the club that our friends at Anthony Wayne have challenged us again this year in the annual 5K Walk/Run that benefits Polio Plus to be held August 17 at Schoaff Park. Contact Bill now to join the team (we need at least 5 men and 5 women) and for tips on training and preparation. Our club hopes to improve on last year s showing, where both teams were competitive, but edged out by Anthony Wayne.
Rotary Speech Contest These 10 high school speech contestants came from South Side & Canterbury High Schools. The local contest was held on Monday, March 18th at the downtown Allen County Public Library. The regional contest is April 13, 2013 at Chesterton High School in Chesterton, Indiana. The winners of Original Oratory & the 4 Way Test will be our featured presentation at the May 6th club meeting. Thanks to chair, Glen Abels and his committee for organizing a great event! April s Student of the Month is Taylor Reid Ruth Corn introduced us to Taylor, who hopes to become a sound engineer and music teacher after attending IU Southeast starting this fall (freshmen orientation is this Saturday!). Taylor is on the varsity tennis team and drum major. She will attend our club meetings in April, so please introduce yourself to her and get to know an outstanding young student in our community!
New Paul Harris Fellows At our April 1 meeting, Denny Williamson was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. Denny is a longtime member, our incoming Vice President, and past president of the Little Turtle Rotary Club. Our apologies for listing his name incorrectly in last week s SPIN. This week, Randy Rider became a Paul Harris Fellow. Randy has served on our club s foundation committee, which works to raise awareness about the international aspects of Rotary. He became a PHF because he believes that his support is essential given his role in asking others to do so. Congratulations, Randy!
Rotary District 6540 World Affairs Conference finds that Peace is Possible!!! On Wednesday, April 10, approximately 100 students from the region and a dozen Rotarians from our club gathered at IPFW for the annual World Affairs Conference. Some of the participating students are pictured above. The theme this year, Is Peace Possible? provided a forum for students to discuss why individuals young and old should care about and work towards peace. Keynote speakers were featured on DVD and included Lee H. Hamilton, director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University, George Lopez, Chair in Peace Studies at Notre Dame University, and Celia Cook-Huffman, professor in Conflict Resolution at Juniata College in Pennsylvania. The event was a great success with engaged students discussing their opinions, beliefs, and opportunities to make our world a better place. Special thanks to chair Nick Shah for organizing the event (originally scheduled for March, but delayed due to inclement weather) and for everyone involved!
It's that time of year again! The Great American Cleanup with be happening May 18 and Rotarians have two options to join the cause. First, join our Environmental Committee at Headwaters Park East for our annual River Cleanup. The crew will meet at 10 am, clean up along our Rotary Circle of Hope and Rotary Avenue of Trees, and finish up by Noon. We ll then enjoy hot dogs at Coney Island (the first one is free!). Thanks to chair, Bill Gabbard for organizing this event. RSVP to Secretary Jane Second, meet our Rotaract Club at the Bike Depot (by the old Wells Street Bridge). This group will set out on canoes to clean the river banks at 9 am and finish by noon. RSVP to rotaractfortwayne@gmail.com. Rotary Youth Exchange We are looking for host families for our incoming student. Please contact President Dave or Chair Doug Hiatt if you are interested in welcoming a young person into your home for 3-4 months.
