It also includes opportunities that are restricted to specific disciplines, women, minorities, and non-u.s. Citizens. Some opportunities are for full fellowships (tuition and stipend); others are for smaller grants to help you pay for the travel or equipment necessary for you to complete your research. The list is not comprehensive. 2 FELLOWSHIP and GRANT OPPORTUNITIES for GRADUATE STUDENTS in MATH and PHYSICAL SCIENCES Federal Opportunities Graduate Research Fellowship Program National Science Foundation October each year (Solicitation issued in August) Disciplines funded by the National Science Foundation The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,100 graduate fellowships in this competition. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master s or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are in the early stages of their graduate study. Applicants must be United States citizens or nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States. Individuals are typically eligible to apply during the senior year of college, after graduating from college but prior to entering graduate school, during the first year of graduate school, or prior to completing the first term of the second year of graduate school. A stipend of $30,000 per year for three years; $10,500 toward tuition and fees. Office of Science Graduate Fellowship Department of Energy November 2016 and May 2017 physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences The Department of Energy Office of Science has established the DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE SCGF) program to support outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research in areas that are relevant to the Office of Science. For U.S. Citizens. Must be a first-year or second-year graduate student in a qualified research-focused Ph.D. program. Must be enrolled full-time. Must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.3 or higher. An annual stipend of $35,000; $10,500 toward tuition/fees; and a $5000 research stipend for travel, equipment, or books. Updated Fall of 26

3 NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF) NASA (Go to this link and search NESSF ) February, annually (New solicitation issued in November of each year) Earth science, heliophysics research, planetary science, astrophysics Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted as a full-time graduate student in an accredited U.S. college or university. Students may enter the fellowship program at any time during their graduate work. U.S. citizenship or permanent resident is not required, although such applicants are given preference when two or more proposals are of equal scientific merit. The maximum award is $30,000, which may be used to defray a student s stipend, tuition, fees, travel, books, laboratory supplies, thesis printing, and health insurance. Awards are renewable for two additional years upon satisfactory academic advancement, research progress, and available funding. NASA Space Technology Research Fellowships (NSTRF) NASA (Go to this link and search NSTRF ) November, annually (New solicitation issued in early September of each year) Any discipline relevant to space technology Selected candidates will perform graduate student research at their respective campuses and at NASA Centers and/or at nonprofit U.S. Research and Development (R&D) laboratories. In addition to his or her faculty advisor, each student will be matched with a technically relevant and community engaged researcher who will serve as the student s professional mentor. The goal of NSTRF is to provide the Nation with a pipeline of highly skilled researchers and technologists to improve America's technological competitiveness. NASA Space Technology Fellows will perform innovative space technology research while building the skills necessary to become future technological leaders. Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted as a full-time graduate student in an accredited U.S. college or university. Students may enter the fellowship program at any time during their graduate work. U.S. citizenship or permanent resident is not required, although such applicants are given preference when two or more proposals are of equal scientific merit. Student stipend $36,000; $12,000 allowance toward tuition and fees; $1000 health insurance allowance; $9000 faculty advisor allowance; $10,000 on-site NASA Center/R&D lab experience allowance. 4 NASA Graduates Aeronautics Scholarship Program NASA ics_scholarship_program.html#.venecxf4oq- The NASA Education Scholarship Program, formally known as the NASA Undergraduate Aeronautics Scholarship and the NASA MUREP Scholarship Program, is not making new awards for the academic year due to funding and programmatic restructuring. The purpose of this NASA program is to help advance the nation s aeronautics enterprise by investing in the educational development of the future aeronautics workforce and to provide opportunities to attract highly motivated graduate students to aeronautics and related fields. U.S. Citizen Computational Science Graduate Fellowship Department of Energy (with the Krell Institute) January, annually. (Solicitation issued in September or October of each year). Any physical science or applied math discipline with an emphasis on high performance computing Funded by the Department of Energy s Office of Science and National Nuclear Security Administration, the program trains scientists to meet the nation s workforce needs and helps to create a nationwide interdisciplinary community. U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. Available only to senior undergraduates and first-year graduate students. $36,000 annual stipend; full tuition and fees; $5000 education allowance in first year ($1000 each renewed year); 12-week research practicum; renewable up to four years. National Nuclear Security Administration Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship National Nuclear Security Administration (with the Krell Institute) January, annually (Solicitation issued in October of each year) high-energy physics, low-energy nuclear science, or properties of materials under extreme conditions Funded by the Department of Energy s Office of Science and National Nuclear Security Administration, the program trains scientists to meet the nation s workforce needs and helps to create a nationwide interdisciplinary community. Graduate Fellowship Program Illinois Space Grant Consortium April annually (Solicitation posted in February or March of each year.) fields related to astronomy, aerospace, cosmology, physics, or Earth science The Illinois Space Grant Consortium (ISGC) awards graduate fellowships to support outstanding graduate students pursuing aerospace, physics, astronomy, cosmology, Earth system science and other interdisciplinary space-related science, engineering or mathematics fields. Eligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America, and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency. $32,000/9-month stipend; full tuition; $5000/year supplement for Fellows with dependent children; renewable for five years National Physical Science Consortium Fellowship National Physical Science Consortium December 9, 2016 (Solicitation issued in late August of each year.) Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, and their subdisciplines The NPSC has one primary objective: Increase the number of qualified U.S.- citizen Ph.D.'s in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool of women and historically underrepresented minorities. NPSC accomplishes this objective by assisting corporations and government agencies and laboratories in awarding doctoral fellowships to outstanding U.S. students. U.S. Citizenship; Fellows must complete one or two summer internships, as the sponsoring employer requires Full Tuition, fees, $20,000 annual stipend; renewable for up to six years; paid summer employment for at least two years. No restrictions on citizenship One year Fellowship. $28,500 stipend IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Program IBM Nominations begin in September computer science, chemistry, materials science, physics, mathematical sciences IBM Ph.D. Fellows are awarded a stipend for one academic year. Fellowships vary by country/geographic area, and the students will be informed at the time of the award what the value is for their country/geographic area. IBM Ph.D. Fellows are matched with an IBM Mentor according to their technical interests, and they are strongly encouraged to participate in at least one internship at IBM while completing their studies. A student may compete annually and be awarded a maximum of three years. Open to all U.S. and International students. Students must be nominated by a faculty member and enrolled full-time in a Ph.D. program. The faculty member is encouraged to contact an IBM colleague prior to submitting the nomination to assure mutual interest. Students from Europe and Russia may be nominated in their first year of study in their doctoral program. Outside of Europe and Russia, students must have completed at least one year of study in their doctoral program at the time of their nomination. 8 Dan David Scholarship Dan David Foundation March, annually Awarded fields change annually. Check website. In 2017, the scientific field is observational or theoretical astronomy. The Dan David Foundation awards twenty scholarships of $15,000 each to outstanding doctoral and postdoctoral students of exceptional promise in the chosen fields for the current year. Ten scholarships are awarded to doctoral and post-doctoral students at universities throughout the world. Graduate students and postdocs. Open to non-u.s. citizens $15,000 scholarship Microsoft Graduate Fellowship Program Microsoft Corporation October annually (Solicitation issued in mid-august each year) computer science and mathematics The two-year fellowship includes an opportunity to complete salaried internships with either Microsoft Research or Microsoft Live Labs in Redmond, Washington No citizenship requirement. For students in the 2 nd or 3 rd year. Must be nominated by department. 100% of the tuition and fees for two academic years. A stipend of $28,000; $4000 travel allowance. Opportunity to complete a salaried internship. Josephine DeKarman Fellowship Josephine DeKarman Fellowship Trust January annually (Solicitation issued in September each year.) This one-year fellowship supports students who are at the dissertation stage of their careers. Open to U.S. Citizens, permanent residents, and international students. $22,000 stipend. Facebook Graduate Fellowship Program Facebook November 1, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Connectivity Hardware, Data Mining, Databases, Distributed Systems, Networking & Operating Systems, Economics & Computation, Electrical Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing & Speech Technologies, Programming Languages & Compilers, Security & Privacy, Social Computing, Software Engineering Support for promising doctoral students in computer science and engineering. 9 Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research Program Sigma Xi: The Scientific Research Society March 15 and October 1 annually The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project. Students from any country are eligible to receive funding. Up to $5000 for astronomy; $2500 for vision-related research; $1000 for others The Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research American Philosophical Society February annually Any discipline that relies on the collection of specimens and data such as, for example, biology, ecology, geography, geology, linguistics, paleontology, and population genetics. The Lewis and Clark Fund supports exploratory field studies for the collection of specimens and data. Applications are invited from disciplines with a large dependence on field studies, such as ecology, geography, geology, and population genetics, but grants will not be restricted to these fields. The competition is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, and foreign nationals formally affiliated with a U.S.-based institution, who may carry out research anywhere in the world. Award is given for field research. Amounts will depend on travel costs, but will ordinarily be in the range of several hundred dollars up to about $5,000. The Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research in Astrobiology American Philosophical Society February annually Any discipline related to astrobiology, including astronomy, chemistry, geology, planetary science. Astrobiology includes investigations to understand the conditions of the early Earth when life arose. Its scope also includes research of contemporary locations on Earth that might be similar to early earth and to environments elsewhere in our Solar System (such as on Mars, Europa, and Titan), which may be, or have been in the past, suitable for life. Astrobiology is also about understanding the characteristics of life, which requires investigations into extreme natural environments on Earth and, eventually, elsewhere. The competition is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, and foreign nationals formally affiliated with a U.S.-based institution, who may carry out research anywhere in the world. Award is given for field research. Amounts will depend on travel costs, but will ordinarily be in the range of several hundred dollars up to about $5,000. Grants are payable to the individual applicant. The Explorers Club Exploration Fund The Explorers Club Updated Fall of 26

10 October annually Any discipline related to the goals of the Explorers Club The Explorers Club promotes the scientific exploration of land, sea, air, and space by supporting research and education in the physical, natural and biological sciences. Each applicant must propose a field project as a full-time student under the supervision of a research supervisor. No citizenship requirement. Grants range from $500 to $5000, with an average of $2500. See website for more information. Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Smithsonian Institute Applications accepted year-round. Submit application 6 weeks prior to proposed start date. Astrophysics Fellowships allow students to do all or part of their thesis research at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Applicants must have completed preliminary coursework and examination and be ready to begin dissertation research at the time of the award. International students with J-1 visas are eligible. Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research Fellowship Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Opens in February Any discipline that conducts research about or in Antarctica (e.g., climate, glaciers, evolution, astronomy/astrophysics) The program is for PhD students, and those within 5 years of having completed a PhD, from within the 35 SCAR Member countries to undertake research at an institute in another SCAR country. Topics for support should make a contribution to the objectives of one or more of the Scientific Research Program endorsed by SCAR. Ph.D. students and post-docs within 5 years of completing the degree. Up to $15,000 plus a modest subsistence allowance for the fellow to conduct research at another SCAR-member institution. Kosciuszko Foundation Tuition Scholarship Kosciuszko Foundation January annually; new solicitation issued in fall of each year. 11 For Students from Under-Represented Groups Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowship United Negro College Fund and Merck December annually Life sciences, physical science, or engineering Fellowship is to help graduate students complete coursework, conduct research, and prepare the dissertation required for a doctoral degree in a life science, physical science, or engineering. Black American with US citizenship or permanent residence. The Fellow must be engaged in and within 1-3 years of completing the dissertation research having successfully completed all qualifying exams by September 1 of the application year. Awards up to $53,500. At least 12 dissertation fellowships will be awarded in Each fellowship provides up to a maximum of $53,500, which includes a Stipend of up to $43,500 for the Fellow and a Research Grant of up to $10,000 to support the research needs of the Fellow. The fellowship stipend is intended to cover from months of fellowship tenure. A maximum of $30,000 in stipend may be received in any 12 month period. American Fellowship (Dissertation Year) American Association of University Women November each year (application available in August) American Fellowships support women doctoral candidates completing the dissertation. U.S. Citizenship or permanent residence. Applicants must have completed all course work, passed all preliminary examinations. $20,000 for dissertation fellowship. 12 December 1, 2016 (application available in August) The program provides support for women pursuing full-time graduate or postdoctoral study in the United States who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Have citizenship in a country other than the United States or possession of a nonimmigrant visa if residing in the United States. Women holding dual citizenship in the United States and another country or who are permanent legal residents of the United States are not eligible. Hold an academic degree (earned in the United States or abroad) equivalent to a U.S. bachelor s degree completed by September 30, Intend to devote herself full-time to the proposed academic plan during the fellowship year. Intend to return to her home country to pursue a professional career. Be proficient in English. $20,000 for dissertation fellowship. Amelia Earhart Fellowship Program Zonta International ip.aspx November 15, annually aerospace-related science and engineering Women of any nationality pursuing a PhD/doctoral degree who demonstrate a superior academic record in the field of aerospace-related sciences and aerospace-related engineering are eligible. Women of any nationality One-year fellowship of $10,000. May be renewed for one additional year. Various Scholarships Association for Women Geoscientists varies Geophysical Sciences Awards vary to provide assistance for research expenses, dissertation expenses, field work, or professional development. Eligibility varies according to the specific award. Awards range from $500 to $6000 to help with expenses associated with finishing the degree. Graduate Women in Science Grants Sigma Delta Epsilon January each year Physical sciences; environmental, mathematical, computer, life sciences; anthropology, psychology, and statistics Purposes 1. To increase knowledge in the fundamental sciences. 2. To encourage research careers in the sciences by women. Female graduate students. U.S. Citizenship not required. Updated Fall of 26

13 $3000-$10,000 for Fellowships funds may be used for such things as expendable supplies, small equipment to be used by the recipient (not for general use), publication of research findings, travel and subsistence while performing field studies, or travel to another laboratory for collaborative research. Google Anita Borg Scholarship Google February annually computer science To encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders. Scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates' academic background and demonstrated leadership scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to visit Google headquarters in Mountain View, California for a networking retreat which will include workshops with a series of speakers, panelists, breakout sessions and social activities. For female students in computer science. U.S. citizens and international students are eligible. First-year students only may apply $10,000 scholarship which may be used toward tuition, fees, books, supplies and equipment. Soros Foundation Fellowship for New Americans Soros Foundation Early November each year The purpose of The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. A New American is an individual who (1) is a resident alien; i.e., holds a Green Card, or, (2) has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen, or (3) is the child of two parents who are both naturalized citizens. Must be in first or second year of graduate school. $25,000 for stipend; $20,000 toward tuition HENAAC Scholarships Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference Updated Fall of 26

14 April each year (application available in January) Science, engineering, technology There are several different programs Most programs require U.S. citizenship or permanent residency; some don t Varies by program, ranges from $500 - $10,000 AMS Industry Government Graduate Fellowship American Meteorological Society Atmospheric or Oceanic Science The Fellowship is sponsored by industry leaders and government agencies and is designed to attract promising young scientists to prepare for careers in the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic fields. Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident and be entering the first year of graduate study. $25,000 stipend for nine months (academic year) Marilyn Yarbrough Dissertation/Teaching Fellowship Kenyon College (Ohio) Annually January Early January annually Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Scientific Computing In order to encourage such scholars to consider college rather than university teaching, Kenyon College offers the Marilyn Yarbrough Dissertation/Teaching Fellowship. The program is for scholars in the final stages of their doctoral work who need only to finish the dissertation to complete requirements for the Ph.D. Kenyon College hopes the experience of living and working for a year at Kenyon will encourage Fellows to consider a liberal arts college as a place to begin their careers as teachers and scholars. Must be a U.S. citizen or national; must be a member of an underrepresented group (ethnic minorities; women in fields that attract mostly men, or men in fields that attract mostly women; and persons who are first-generation college attendees); must be planning a career in teaching and research; must be at the dissertation stage of graduate school. The Fellow is expected to write the dissertation and to teach one course each semester, usually in the Fellow's general research area. Fellows are also expected to offer a college lecture or departmental seminar on the dissertation topic at some point during the academic year in residence. Kenyon College assumes that the Fellow will participate in the intellectual life of his/her home department, as well as in the broader cultural life of the College. Our primary expectation, however, and the main focus of this fellowship, is the completion of the dissertation. Updated Fall of 26

15 Kenyon will provide a stipend of $33,500, plus health benefits, housing, and a small moving allowance. The College will also provide an allowance to cover travel to conferences or for consultation with the dissertation director. Kenyon will assist the Fellow in finding college housing. The Fellow will be provided an office, a networked computer, and secretarial support services. Opportunities for Foreign Study College de France Science Research Travel University of Chicago nce/ April annually Physical Sciences Division, the Biological Sciences Division, or the Institute for Molecular Engineering This travel grant provides funding in support of University of Chicago PhD students conducting research in Paris under the supervision of a Collège de France faculty member. Must be a Ph.D. candidate. Open to students of any citizenship. $6000 per quarter for stays ranging from one three quarters. Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Summer Program Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Multiple deadlines throughout the year. See website. The purpose of the program is to provide opportunities to young pre- and post-doctoral researchers from the US, Canada and Europe to conduct, under the guidance of their hosts, cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions. In so doing, the program is designed to help advance the research of the visiting fellows, while augmenting opportunities for young researchers to come to Japan from the US, Canada and Europe. Applications for this program are submitted by a host researcher in Japan who wishes to host a foreign postdoctoral fellow. Visit may range from 1-12 months. Be a citizen or permanent resident of US, Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, the UK, Italy, Finland, the other European Union Countries (as of 1 April 2012), Switzerland, Norway and Russia. JSPS receives applications for this program only through the overseas nominating authorities, for USA nominations come from NSF.
