8 Scholarships and Fellowships The NRF administers the following three types of student funding support through its various funding instruments: 1. Free-standing scholarship and fellowship: The student or fellow individually applies for support and is responsible for reporting on the utilisation of funds. 2. Block Grant: The award is issued as a block grant to the institution, which nominates the student or fellow for the grant, based on a set of selection criteria provided by the NRF. 3. Grantholder-linked scholarships and fellowships: The grantholder applies for NRF funding and nominates students or fellows for support within his/her research project funding.

9 Scholarships and Fellowships A certain percentage is reserved for non-south Africans, guided by published Ministerial Guidelines as follows: 5% SADC; 4% rest of African continent; and 4% non-african countries. In the case of Postdoctoral fellowship, no ratio applies.

12 Knowledge, Interchange and Collaboration (KIC) Types of support Travel grants for Individual Researchers travel by researchers registered in South Africa to attend local and international conferences, workshops Visiting Foreign Researcher to enable local researchers to invite foreign researchers to spend time in South Africa in order to enrich local expertise in their field, promote future collaboration and/or strengthen existing collaboration. Africa Interaction to enable researchers in South Africa to build capacity and to establish or strengthen academic collaboration with one or more partners based at universities or research institutions in Africa. Support for Local Scientific Events support for international research events hosted in South Africa such as scientific meetings including symposia, congresses, colloquia, and workshops.

13 International Council for Science Union (ICSU) Mission statement: To strengthen international science for the benefit of society by mobilizing knowledge and resources of the international science community. Global membership of national scientific bodies and International Scientific Unions NRF is the secretariat for ICSU South Africa (ICSU-SA). Objectives of ICSU-SA Internationalise the research platform; Enhance networking within the science system; Foster collaboration in order to improve the quality of research outputs by researchers; Increase the number of SA scientists on the international arena. Approximately 30 South African National Committees/Unions affiliated to ICSU-SA

15 DST-NRF Conference Fund The funding platform makes provision for strategic, large events of an international nature, hosted in South Africa, or on behalf of South Africa abroad. Promote South Africa as a science destination; Increase the competitiveness of the South African National System of Innovation (NSI); Showcase South Africa s scientific endeavours and infrastructure, and to build capacity within the NSI; Enhance networking within the science system; Foster international collaboration in order to improve the quality of research outputs by researchers. Types of support Conferencing costs Accommodation and/or travel for non paying delegates (keynote speakers, or participants from Africa only) Bursaries/support for participants (limited to students and participants from developing countries, and specifically from Africa)

16 Equipment-Related Travel and Training Grants The rationale of this funding instrument is to make funds available to support access to state-of-the-art research equipment that is not available at the home institution or regionally or nationally. The grants are divided into two categories, namely: Equipment-related Travel Grants: grant will cover national or international travel and subsistence costs as required as well as contributions towards the cost of equipment utilisation. Equipment-related Training Grants: funds available for researchers to host or attend workshops focussed on training technical staff, postgraduate students and other users of the specialised or state-of-the-art research equipment For more information on RED visit the following link
