Japan Academy Medal is the highest academic honor awarded annually to outstanding young scholars under the age of 45. Five to six medal winners are selected from 25 awardees of the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Prize of that year. The JSPS Prize in 2013 was given to 25 scholars who have demonstrated the highest potential in their respective field from a pool of 383 candidates recommended by more than 3,600 universities and research institutes around the country. One scholar each from the fields of biology, science and engineers, humanities and social sciences, and general sciences is awarded the Japan Academy Medal. The award committee commented that Sato s work demonstrates thorough understanding of the economics of resources. At the same time, his research offers a new insight based on extensive fieldwork in Southeast Asia, incorporating the perspectives of the local people in his discussion of resource development. While social studies on natural resources have been heavily focused on political and diplomatic issues related to foreign aid and development cooperation, Sato also draws inspiration from the natural sciences, which makes his work creative and unique. His work stands out in the field.
