2 SCHOLARSHIPS TO WATCH FOR Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarships Now Open Closing date: 1 October 2014 Levels: Entrance / Undergraduate / Graduate / Postgraduate The Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarships provide support for students studying at the University of Waikato who also excel in either a sporting code or a creative/performing art. The Funding Information Service offers the BreakOut website Please note that BreakOut is a subscriber service; checking it from a private computer can cost a lot! We strongly recommend that you use a University of Waikato computer, as we pay a blanket subscription. If you don't have access to a University computer, access BreakOut from a site that already pays a subscription, e.g. a public library. Ten Golden Jubilee School Leaver Scholarships will be awarded in 2014 for study commencing in 2015 on the basis of academic excellence, leadership potential, and community citizenship. Further information and the application form are available on our website ( The Betty Loughhead Soroptimist Scholarship Trust Closing date: 1 September 2014 Level: Undergraduate / Graduate This scholarship has been established to assist women intending to pursue an educational programme. The Soroptimists, a women s service organisation, offer this Scholarship to women enrolled to train or re-train in an NZQA programme at a New Zealand tertiary institution. Applicants must be 25 years or over, have a proven record of academic achievement, be NZ citizens, and be prepared to participate in Soroptimist promotional activities. For further information visit the website Resource Management Law Association (RMLA) Masters Scholarship Closing date: 1 September 2014 Level: Graduate The purpose of the RMLA Masters Scholarship is to encourage graduate students from a variety of disciplines ie Law, planning, engineering, geography, science, landscape architecture, urban planning and resource management, to focus their research theses or dissertations on topics related to the application of resource management in New Zealand. This scholarship is open to any graduate student in a university in New Zealand or Overseas, registered for a Masters (including an undergraduate Honours degree involving advanced levels of research and study at Masters degree level). An invaluable part of these scholarships is the industry connectivity that allows you to grow from the experience of being directly supported and mentored by your key sponsor company. For further information and to apply, visit Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Internships Closing date: 8 September 2014 Level: Undergraduate / Graduate / Postgraduate These internships are intended for Māori and Indigenous students interested in pursuing a career in research. The student will work under the direction and guidance of a senior research on an existing research project aligned to 5

Ten internships will be available for the period from mid- December 2014 through to the end of February For further information and to apply online, visit Todd Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship in Energy Research (UNZ) (Now an online application contact UoW Scholarships Office before applying) Extended closing date: 8 September 2014 Level: Postgraduate This scholarship is offered to students who are undertaking research in the field of energy (towards a doctoral degree at a New Zealand university or approved research institution in New Zealand) which may have wide relevance including value to New Zealand. It is available for up to three years with a value of $25,000 per annum, including tuition fees. An additional $3,000 will also be available during the period for conference attendance. Further information and online application forms are available from the UNZ website ( Child Injury Prevention Foundation of New Zealand Summer Research Scholarship Closing date 12 September 2014 Level: Undergraduate / Postgraduate The Child Injury Prevention Foundation wishes to award a number of student scholarships for the forthcoming summer break. Projects must relate in some way to child injury prevention (intentional (child abuse) or unintentional (child accidents)) and preference will be given to those that will be of immediate practical benefit to the community. Asia:NZ Study Grants to Japan Closing date: TBC Level: Undergraduate The Asia New Zealand Foundation (Asia:NZ) Study Grants to Japan are open to students studying at undergraduate level at a New Zealand tertiary institution who have been accepted on an exchange programme to Japan. These grants are a contribution towards study costs to Japan. Applicants must be a NZ citizen or permanent resident to apply and be aged between 17 and 25 at time of study. The value of the grant is $2,000. For further information and application form, visit AMP National Scholarships Closing date 16 September 2014 Level: Undergraduate / Graduate / Postgraduate AMP are looking for Kiwis who need help doing their thing. They are looking for people who are passionate about doing their own thing. So whether your thing is a community project, business idea, education, dream to represent your country, you could be in line to get some extra help. Anyone can apply. as there is no age limit or restriction, as long as they are a NZ citizen or Permanent resident. The scholarships have a value of up to $10,000. Awards are worth up to $2,000 for full-time students and up to $1,000 for part-time students. Further information and online application forms will be available from 2 September on our website Te Pua Wānanga ki te Ao Postgraduate Excellence Awards (Apply online after 1 September) Closing date: 19 September 2014 Level: Postgraduate Candidates will be students who qualify for, or are currently enrolled in, postgraduate (MPhil, PhD) study within the School of Māori and Pacific Development, and whose research has particular relevance to the priorities of the School. 7 Te Pua Wānanga ki te Ao Undergraduate Excellence Awards (Apply online after 1 September) Closing date: 19 September 2014 Level: Undergraduate Candidates will be students undertaking full-time undergraduate study towards a Bachelor s degree in the School of Māori and Pacific Development. Those enrolled in conjoint or double degrees may also be considered. Candidates will be selected on the basis of academic merit, personal character, and involvement in cultural, academic, and community life. Awards are worth up to $1,000. Further information and online application forms will be available from 2 September on our website Ministry for Primary Industries / NIWA Postgraduate Scholarships in Quantitative Fisheries Science Closing date 20 September 2014 Level: Graduate In collaboration with NIWA, the Ministry for Primary Industries is offering awards for masters students. Applicants with majors or minors in mathematics, statistics and / or biology are, encouraged to apply. It is expected that applicants will have a strong quantitative background and it is recommended that only those students who have taken statistics, calculus or mathematics at, or above, second-year level submit an application. Stock assessment modelling will be a major, but not exclusive, focus of the Scholarship programme. The Masters Scholarship has a value of up to $20,000 per annum for up to two years. HOPE meetings are held for excellent graduate students and early-stage researchers specially selected from countries around the Asia- Pacific region. The subject fields are Physics, Chemistry, Physiology/Medicine and Related Fields (including natural sciences e.g. Biology, Agriculture etc). Candidates must be PhD students or postdoctoral researchers (within 5 years of PhD as of 1 April 2014). The 7 th HOPE meeting will be held from the March in Tokyo, Japan. For further details, please check out the programme guidelines and application forms from: Ngārimu VC and 28 th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships Closing date: 26 September 2014 Level: Undergraduate / Graduate / Postgraduate The Ngārimu VC and 28 th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships Fund Board has asked us to advertise the following awards: Undergraduate Scholarships Three undergraduate Scholarships valued at $10,000 p.a. for up to five years. Masters Scholarship One masters Scholarship valued at $15,000 p.a. for up to two years. Doctoral Scholarship One Doctoral Scholarship valued at $25,000 p.a. for up to two years. All applicants must be: New Zealand Māori Studying at an approved tertiary institution Able to show characteristics of the ideal applicant as detailed in the application outline document Able to describe their contribution to whānau, hapū or iwi following successful completion of their study. Additionally, postgraduate applicants must: Be able to show the link between Māori and the outcome or benefit of their study or work. Sir Hugh Kawharu Masters Scholarship Closing date 26 September 2014 Level: Graduate The Sir Hugh Kawharu Masters Scholarship for Innovation in Science is awarded by the Kawharu Foundation and comprises a grant of $10,000. In addition, in consultation with the successful candidate, the Foundation may appoint an academic mentor for the duration of his or her studies. The purpose of the Scholarship is to support and encourage masters level study by Māori in the sciences. The Scholarship is applicable across a broad range of science disciplines including the physical, mathematical and computational, earth, environment, marine, social, health, biological, biomedical, human, and behavioural sciences. Further information about the Scholarship and an application form is available on the Foundation's website, John Allan Scholarship in Education Extended Closing date: 30 September 2014 This is a Scholarship for (currently registered) qualified teachers. Applicants must be enrolled full- or part-time in a 90 or 120 point masters thesis with the Faculty of Education at the University of Waikato in Selection will be made on the basis of the academic achievement of the applicants, and their (proposed) research topics. Preference will be given to applicants intending to conduct research related to professional practice in education, especially research into ways of making teaching more effective. Further information and application forms are available from our website ( Ada Wells Memorial Prize Closing date 30 September 2014 Level: Undergraduates / Graduates The prize is awarded for an essay, the subject of which involves the exposition of some subject chosen from literature having reference to social ideals. The subject of the essay shall be prescribed from year to year. Details of the topic for a particular year may be obtained from the Registrar. This $800 Award is open to all undergraduates, and graduates (domestic & international) of not more than three years standing. Australian Federation of Graduate Women (AFGW) ACT Inc. Accommodation Bursary Closing date 30 September 2014 Level: Graduate The Australian Federation of Graduate Women ACT Incorporated offers free board and lodging for up to four weeks at the residential accommodation at the Australian National University, Canberra, to a woman graduate or final-year honours student from a university or tertiary institute in Australia, New Zealand, Papua-New Guinea or the South Pacific. The award is open to women of any age who wish to carry out some short project, in any field, that necessitates a short stay in Canberra and which will benefit their research or professional expertise. Preference may be given to applicants who are members of the International Federation of University Women. Chinese Poll Tax HeritageTrust Closing date 30 September 2014 Level: Undergraduate / Graduate / Postgraduate Members of New Zealand s Chinese community are being invited to apply for funding from the current funding round of the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust. The Trust aims to create heightened understanding of the Chinese community within New Zealand and strengthen the unique identity of Chinese New Zealanders. The Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust provides recognition of the hardship caused by the poll tax, and is a gesture of goodwill to poll tax payers, their descendants, and future generations. 9 Corporate Lawyers Association of New Zealand (CLANZ) Research Scholarship Closing date 30 September 2014 Level: Postgraduate The Corporate Lawyers Association of New Zealand, a section of the New Zealand Law Society, is offering a scholarship to enable a New Zealand in-house lawyer or postgraduate law student to undertake research directly relevant to the practice of in-house lawyers in this country, and to publish research. The successful applicant will receive a total of up to NZ$10,000 to undertake their research. The Macmillan Brown Prize for Writers Extended Closing date: 30 September 2014 Level: Undergraduate / Graduate Candidates for this Award submit one of the following: an essay, a short story, a poem or group of poems, a short play, or other work in an appropriate form, dealing imaginatively with any theme. This (approx.) $2,500 Prize (administered by the University of Canterbury) is open to all undergraduates, and graduates of not more than three years standing. For further information, scholarships@waikato.ac.nz New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women (NZFGW) Harriette Jenkins Awards Closing date 30 September 2014 Level: Graduate The purpose of these $2,000 Awards is to encourage members of the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women (who joined not less than six months ago) to carry out or complete a piece of research, or to further their studies. The Awards are to be used for incidental expenses connected with the project, for example books, equipment, child care, travel. Neuromuscular Research Foundation Trust Closing date: 30 September 2014 The Neuromuscular Research Foundation Trust (NRFT) is accepting funding applications for research relevant to New Zealanders living with neuromuscular conditions. Grants of up to $30,000 are available. NRFT is also offering two postgraduate student scholarships of $5,000. Proposals most likely to be considered will be those which address standards of care (including best and/or innovative practice in supporting people with neuromuscular conditions); effectiveness and/or cost benefit of service delivery modes and interventions; prevalence and incidence of neuromuscular conditions; and proposals which extend existing research into treatment and cures. To assist with the process of receiving and evaluating the proposals, Chris Higgins would be grateful if those who are contemplating submitting an application, including those who have contacted Chris previously, could give him an early indication or confirmation of their intentions prior to the 30 th September deadline. The Scholarship recipient needs to be confident, have excellent time management skills, and be a general all rounder with a wide range of skills and experiences and partaking in study for the 2014 academic year. The recipient is expected to fill a role of working member of the Hamilton YWCA Board. She must be a good representative of the YWCA's philosophy, and relate well to young women. 10 Department of Conservation (DOC) Summer Internship Programme Information will be available in September 2014 about the 2014/15 summer internship applications. Level: Undergraduate / Graduate / Postgraduate The Department of Conservation (DOC) Summer Internship Programme offers tertiary students with an interest in conservation the opportunity to develop skills and gain experience that complements their course of study. Past interns have worked in varying roles in GIS, Marine, Legal and Organisational Development and have come from different educational Pathways. DOC internships depend on suitable work programmes and available funding.
