3 GUIDELINES FOR YOUR PERSONAL ESSAY Grammar: all proper nouns are capitalized 1 st person is permitted but make sure I is not used too much and that it is ALWAYS capitalized there are no sentence fragments proper punctuation is used and use of an exclamation point is avoided each new paragraph is properly indented be mindful of tense agreement try not to switch between past and present unless necessary, deliberate and for an obvious stylistic purpose there is no text speak or emoji s. Content and style: the essay focuses on you and your future aspirations make sure you are answering the prompt fully there is a specific point that you are trying to make An essay should be divided into paragraphs. Paragraphs should be determined by the sentences surrounding a central idea. Transitional words, phrases and sentences will help with this task. Paragraphs should not simply be created because it looks like it s time for a new paragraph. the essay reveals your personality the essay still has a certain level of formality you provide specific examples from your life that illustrate the points you are making precise language is important avoid phrases and sentences that have no real content or could be considered filler. avoid overusing words i.e. it, they, I, because focus on strong vocabulary avoid words like good, bad, stuff, things the essay is long enough to make your point and be worth of being considered and essay but not so long where you include too much information or unnecessary information Above all else PROOFREAD!!!!!!!!! 3
