10 10 Meeting with IEM IEETD on IEEE-IEM Joint Award Reported by Nordin Ramli Collaborations between IEEE and IEM IEM Dinner 2017 IEEE Malaysia Section is currently working to strengthen our collaborations with our sister s society, namely as The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). This collaboration enables us to promote and exchange the information on the activities in both platforms. We are also looking forward to co-organize any event together, thus can benefit the members in both society. IEM which has more than 40,000 members nationwide are dominated by industry peoples able to share their knowledge and experience on their engineering best practices to IEEE members, which mainly come from public and private academic institutions. At the meantime also, IEEE can provide more programs related to the awareness and new technology to IEM. We trust that, the collaboration will be definitely benefitted both parties. In particular, we are currently discussing this matter with our focal contact at IEM, which is the IEM Electrical Engineering Technical Division (IEM EETD) since their interest is relatively similar to IEEE. One of the main highlight of our collaboration is having a joint award, which is currently being discussed by both parties. Joint award (to be named for example as IEEE- IEM Award (exact name to be confirmed later)) is to recognize a professional from Malaysia whose contributions in the fields of Electrical, Electronics, Communications, or Computer Engineering and/or Computer Science, which have made a great beneficial impact to the Technical Community and Public of Malaysia. The details of the award will be announced very soon after the approval from both side of management. IEEE Malaysia Section Excos during the IEM Dinner. To mark our collaboration bt between IEEE and IEM, IEEE Malaysia has been invited to IEM Dinner 2017, held at the One World Hotel on 15 April The event was officiated by Datuk Seri Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department. Five of IEEE Malaysia Excoms attended the dinner. We are honored to witness the IEM EETD to win the best technical division in IEM. IEEE PES Malaysia Chapter Supported Industrial Talk Topic Energy Delivery System Achieving Good Electrical Connections Date 22nd March 2017 (14:00 15:30) Venue Speakers DK7, Block Y, Department of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Malaya Mr Albert Tan, Mr Ng Choon Guan from Conway Terminals Manufacturer Sdn Bhd Mr Albert Tan is the General Manager from Conway, who presented the talk on behalf of Mr Ng Choon Guan. The event is supported by by IEEE PES Malaysia Chapter. In his talk, he described a good electrical connection is able to conduct current safely at low temperature, with energy saving, and can last for many years. There are three factors to determine a good connection: (1) right connector, (2) crimping tools and dies, (3) workmanship. There are two types of connectors: copper and aluminum. The copper is of ETP (Electrolytic Tough Pitch) grade with conductivity of 99%. The aluminum is of the type Electrical Grade Aluminum (AL1050/1350) with conductivity of 60% I.A.C.S. All the connectors must follow the Malaysia Standards. Example of Malaysia Standards are MS 1540:2015, MS 1779:2005, MS 1838:2005, MS 2584:2014, MS 2654:2015. The event gathered a total of 115 participants from seven universities across Malaysia and USM main campus, Penang has acted as the main host. Our purpose is to encourage local university students to explore the world of technology, innovation, and creativity through working with like-minded youths in a fun and competitive environment. The challenge definitely brought out a spark of innovation and creativity in the participants, which was the main goal of the challenge in the first place. The challenge succeeded in attaining its main objective, and had left not only the participants ii but also the organising ii committee with an improved set of soft skills.
