ONE ROTARY ONE PHILIPPINES ONE FOR MARAWI CONDUCTS FACT-FINDING MISSIONS ANEW, October 13-15, 2017 DE Raffy Alunan and DE Jackie Rodriguez together with Rotary Club of Manila Quiapo Central Great President Datu Haron Ali and Dr. Dulce Gust, widow of PP Gert Gust, embarked on a trip to Marawi City in furtherance of the One Rotary One Philippines One for Marawi Project from October 13-15, 2017 to assess once more what help they need. The group landed in Cagayan de Oro City then took a land trip to Iligan where they spent the entire day of October 13, There they met with local Rotary clubs, civil society and uniformed services. The following day, October 14, 2017, they addressed the imams from Lanao on the universal themes of patience, moderation, sacrifice, mercy, brotherhood, justice and peace for the greater good of mankind at the Mindanao State University-IIT in Iligan City. Thereafter, they proceeded to Marawi City to visit the Mindanao State University there for lunch and were very thankful that the building donated by our very own Manila Rotarian Former Speaker Joe de Venecia remained unscathed by the war. They also visited the Saguiaran and Balo-i municipalities to inspect the medcaps sites to help provide medical care to the "bakwits" with Rotary clubs, civil society and uniformed services in collaboration. Their day ended with a meeting at the Office of Civil Defense in Marawi City where they were met by BGen Donato and Col. Brawner. Dinner followed at The Strip. Early the following day, October 15, 2017, the group left Iligan City for Manila and will be back in two (2) weeks to conduct medical missions in "bakwit" areas around Marawi City. 18 B. ROTARY CLUB OF MANILA BRINGS CHEERS TO WOUNDED SOLDIERS AT V. LUNA MEDICAL CENTER at the Victoriano Luna Medical Center in Quezon City on the 27th of September 2017 turned into tears of joy, setting the tone for the lighter mood the entire afternoon as the fine gentlemen of the Rotary Club of Manila led by President Jimmie Policarpio and as arranged by DE Raffy Alunan and DE Jackie Rodriguez, trooped to the hospital known for treating soldiers wounded in battle among others to lift their spirits and give them hope in the aftermath of war elsewhere in the archipelago. With the help of BGen. Leo Torrelavega and his staff who made everything easy for all concerned, fellow Manila Rotarians, Rotarians of other clubs in the district, entertainers in the persons of Imelda Papin and her sister, Niel de Mesa, an old hand in comedy and Amay Bisaya as well as the Miss Philippines Beauty Queens took turns in reaching out to the wounded soldiers through song, camaraderie and laughter while the soldiers, in turn, gamely participated, making them forget, if even for a moment, the ordeal they have gone through. Goodies from Manila Rotarians and Pepsi Cola Philippines, Inc. were overflowing as each soldier received his share of blessings that came his way. With PAT Hermie Esguerra and Rtn. Thad Llamzon taking turns on the open microphone in belting the afternoon's best repertoire, Manila Rotarians, no doubt, made their mark, albeit, in a subtle manner, in the hearts and minds of soldiers yearning for the care of a concerned Philippine population. And like all good and great things, the afternoon saw its end, yet, the happy memories would forever be etched in the fighting hearts of the Filipino soldier who fights never ending battles to assure our sovereignty and the integrity of a government ready to serve the Filipino people. 22 OCTOBER 26-28, 2017 MEDCAP : Acknowledgement to participants for a successful medcap: 1. The Rotary Clubs of Manila, Quiapo Central, Tondo, Quirino, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Ranao Marawi, Valencia and the incumbent/incoming district governors (Loy Cosico/Rudy Bediones of District 3810; Linda Deleste/Frank Manga of District 3870) and their tireless and efficient staff; 2. Team Humanity led by Bong Ano who provided the logistical support, internal security and links to the traditional leaders of Marano society; 3. PAL Chairman Lucio Tan and President Jimmy Bautista and their staff and Foundation for all the all-important free passage of our medical team and cargo; 4. Don Juan Montel of the Spanish Aid agency Beneficiensa; 5. Iligan Mayor Celso Regencia and Patrick Nunez; DOT ASEC Ricky Alegre and RD10 May Unchuan representing DOT Sec. Wanda Teo; and Gloria Macaraeg for arranging the whole team to stay in the spacious and charming Macapagal residence in Iligan; Rotary Club of Manila District Monthly Report October & November 2017 Page 22 of 39

23 6. The officers and men of the 6ID and PNP PSPO who secured and escorted us from start to finish, and during our previous fact-finding, ocular and coordination trips; 7. The female hijab warriors of the PNP and AFP who controlled the medical mission areas; 8. RCM DE Jackie Rodriguez supported by PDG Lyne Abanilla, Ms. Darlene Lamis and Dr. Capt Sharon Reyes for coordinating with PAL to ensure that all passengers and cargo were lifted from and to Manila; 9. Dr. Sr. Eva Maamo and Dr. Capt Reyes for gathering the medicines and medical supplies from various donors (over 1 ton was brought for this mission), and for organizing the medical teams from their hospital and clinic that augmented the doctors and nurses fielded by the local Rotary Clubs, the DOH and the LGUs of Marawi, Saguiaran and Baloi. 10. Rotarian Abe Pascual; Unilab s Ritemed/Pharex; and Caritas that donated additional medicines that are being gathered for the next medical mission in November. We had lots of moving parts; each one performed superbly as expected sacrificing their time, talent and treasure in the service of others. Minus the usual minor bugs and glitches that were eventually resolved on the spot through teamwork, I d give our first medical mission a rating of 90%. Weather was beyond our control which hampered the Saguiaran leg; only 818 were served. But the conditions in Baloi were a marked improvement allowing us to serve over 1,200 people. All in all, we served over 2,000 patients but it could have been more as we prepared for 4,000 patients. Excess medicines and supplies are being stored through the kindness of PDG Linda Deleste for the next mission which likely be in Iligan and/or Cagayan de Oro. While the medcaps were on-going, we paid courtesy calls on Marawi Mayor Majul Gandarma, Iligan Mayor Celso Regencia, RLA Zia Adiong, and the Office of Civil Defense. The Mayors and Vice- Mayors of 24 Saguiaran and Baloi were nowhere to be found, while the AFP s commanders on the ground were in Manila for the AFP Chief of Staff turnover ceremony. Distance and traffic due to security checkpoints, and point-of-distribution handling delayed or diverted the meals for some doctors. There were minor leadership, followership and collaborative issues which are normal in such undertakings but were resolved with timely interventions and empathy. Bottom line: unity, solidarity and teamwork always wins the day for those who practice it. Congratulations to all and thank you from RCM. 30 PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION AND CARE STRATEGIES IN IMPROVING MEMORY AND AGE-RELATED THINKING SKILLS Elias D. Adamos, M.D. Forgetfulness can sometimes be embarrassing. Whether you re a student who s trying to get over and done with a recitation class or a guest in a party who s struggling to remember names and faces, being forgetful can put you in some difficult situations. Difficulties can happen to both the young and the not so young, but it is more common in the latter. But like in an organization where rank has its privilege, age-related memory problems also has its ready excuse senior moments as they say it is. If you re having some memory problems, the July 2017 Harvard health newsletter suggests the following tricks to improve thinking and memory. The memory process Memory involves three processes: encoding, recording, and retrieval. The brain encodes (takes in) new information; it then records (stores) the information; finally, your brain retrieves information when you need it. Memory tricks 1. Repeat what you hear out loud. Repetition increases the likelihood of recall. Your brain will record the information and you will be able to retrieve it later on. Each repetition gives your brain another opportunity to encode the information. The more the encoding the greater the recall, explains Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital. 2. Make a note of people you need to call, errands to run, and appointments. We are much better at recognition than recall, Dr. Salinas explains. With recognition, such as reading a list, you have additional hooks or hints that help you find the information you re looking for. 3. Make associations. Make connections or associations between new and old information. Connect a person s name to something familiar. For example, if a person s name is Dominic, imagine that person inside the Santo Domingo Church. Create a story around a shopping list. Our brain is good at sequences. It s like looking at a flow chart. Putting things in its proper order or sequence in a story helps improve memory. For example, if your list includes coffee, bread, and butter, the story could revolve around having breakfast meeting with your favorite relative over coffee and buttered bread. 4. Divide information into chunks. If you re tasked to memorize a long poem or a song, memorize it in portions until you complete the whole. If you re trying to memorize a speech in a wedding or a wake, focus on getting only one sentence or idea down at a time. Not the whole speech in one take.
