THE ROTARY EMBLEM The early emblem of Rotary International was a simple wagon wheel (in motion with dust) representing civilization and movement. It was designed in 1905 by Montague M. Bear, Rotary Club of Chicago, who was an engraver. Most of the early clubs adopted the wheel in one form or another. Eventually, in 1922, authority was given to create and reserve an emblem for the exclusive use of all Rotarians. Accordingly, in 1923, the present gear wheel with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted and a keyway added to signify that the wheel was a worker and not an idler. An official description of the emblem was adopted at the 1929 convention in Dallas. Royal blue and gold were chosen as the official Rotary colors and the flag of Rotary was designated as a white field with the Rotary wheel emblazoned on its center. The emblem, worn as a lapel button, now identifies Rotarians around the world. Evolution of Rotary Wheel throughout the years. (top left to bottom right) The official Rotary Flag 4

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ROTARY The first Rotary Club in the world was organized in Chicago, Illinois, USA, on February 23, 1905 by Paul P. Harris, a young lawyer, who gathered together in the spirit of friendship and understanding, a group of men, each of whom was engaged in a different form of service to the public. The basis of that membership-one person from each business and profession in that communitystill exists in Rotary. At first, members of the new club met in rotation at various places of business of the members and this suggested the name Rotary. Since 1905, the ideas of Paul Harris and his friends have become ideals which have been accepted by men and women of practically all nationalities and of many political and religious beliefs. Wherever Rotarians gather, you will find assembled under the Rotary umbrella those business leaders who are committed to community service. Today there are Rotary clubs in some 204 countries and geographical regions. The universal acceptance of Rotary principals has been so great that there are now 32,912 Rotary clubs, which have a membership of over 1.2 million. The objectives of Rotary in every country are the samethe development of fellowship and understanding among business and professional people in the community, the promotion of community-betterment endeavors of high ethical standards in business and professional practices, and the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace. Rotary clubs everywhere share the basic ideal, the ideal of service, which is thoughtfulness and helpfulness to others. 5

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL THEME Dear Fellow Rotarians, With over a century of successful Rotary Service, we are proud to be confident of a future in which generation after generation of Rotarians will bring hope to those in need and peace to a world full of conflict. We see ourselves as part of a great Rotary tradition, as links in a chain joining our future to our past. If that chain is to continue, every link in it must be strong. It is our responsibility, yours and mine, to forge solid links to Rotary s future. It is our responsibility to ensure that Rotary will be stronger next year than it is now, and even stronger the year after that. It is our responsibility to fulfill our promise of a polio-free world today so that Rotary can take on other great challenges tomorrow. As Mohandas Gandhi once told us, The future depends on what we do in the present. If we hope to see Rotary continue through a second century, we cannot simply leave well alone. If the road ahead is to be long, then we will need a map to travel it and we have that map. With input from Rotarians worldwide, Rotary International has developed a strategic plan with seven priorities that set the course for a strong future. Now is the time for us to take the initiative to make this plan a reality. Although this strategic plan was approved by the RI Board, its implementation depends on you. The RI Pre- 7

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL THEME, continued sident cannot invite members to join your club. The RI Board cannot organize and promote a fundraiser in your community to support polio eradication. Nor can any senior leader demonstrate Rotary s code of ethics in your workplace. The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands This simple truth will be our theme for , serving as a constant reminder of the personal responsibility that each Rotarian holds. Winston Churchill once said, The price of greatness is responsibility. Rotary is a great organization, and it has the potential to become even greater if each one of us rises to the challenge and takes responsibility for its future. In Rotary, each one of us has been assigned a job. Its title is Rotarian. Our duties are to offer relevant service locally and internationally, and to expand our club s capacity for service by inviting professional and business leaders to become members and promoting a positive image locally. Our job description also calls for each of us to be an example of ethical behavior in our professional and personal lives, to act as leaders in our club and community, and to fully support Rotary s highest priority of polio eradication. The job of Rotarian brings immense benefits. We enjoy incomparable fellowship with one another and the great personal satisfaction that comes from serving others. If you believe in Rotary and its power to make a difference in the world, it is time to stand up and commit to doing the best job you can with all of your mind, your heart, and your soul. The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands. John Kenny President, Rotary International,

CLUB LEADERSHIP PLAN We were a dying club in many ways. The Club Leadership Plan has been the lifesaver of the club. Strengthen Your Rotary Club by Implementing the Portions of the Club Leadership Plan which will most improve your club operations. The Club Leadership Plan, is vital to the stability, growth, and success of Rotary during our second century of service. It provides clubs with an administrative structure to standardize their procedures and guide their activities in pursuit of the Object of Rotary. The Club Leadership Plan begins by having Rotary clubs develop standard procedures for continuity, communication, and Rotarian involvement. The plan includes strategic planning and goal setting using the Planning Guide for Effective Rotary Club. Its simple committee structure focuses on the central functions of a club and can be expanded to address club service goals and fellowship. The Club Leadership Plan provides the basis on which each club builds its own identity. The nine steps for implementation are functions that all Rotary clubs need to address to be effective. A club may address these functions in any way it chooses. This flexibility allows the Club Leadership Plan to be implemented throughout the Rotary world. The Club Leadership Plan is supported by the new Recommended Rotary Club Bylaws, the Rotary leadership development cycle (including the presidents-elect training seminar and district assembly), the Planning Guide for Effective Rotary Clubs, and the Memo of Club Visit. The Club Leadership Plan has been proven successful by clubs around the world and is the suggested structure for both new and existing Rotary clubs. All clubs should review the plan and determine which practices are already in place and which would benefit the club. Assistant governors should assist club leaders with their assessment and support their efforts to implement the plan. Implementation of the Club Leadership Plan will result in an effective club that is able to improve its community and the world. For more information, contact your RI Club and District Administration representative. For a copy of the new Recommended Rotary Club Bylaws, visit the Download Center of 53

CLUB LEADERSHIP PLAN, continued The purpose of the Club Leadership Plan is to strengthen the Rotary club by providing the administrative framework of an effective club. The elements of an effective club are to: Sustain and/or increase its membership base Implement successful projects that address the needs of its community and communities in other countries Support The Rotary Foundation through both financial contributions and program participation Develop leaders capable of serving in Rotary beyond the club level TO IMPLEMENT a Club Leadership Plan, current, incoming, and past club leaders should: 1. Club committees are charged with carrying out the annual and long-range goals of the club based on the four Avenues of Service. The president-elect, president, and immediate past president should work together to ensure continuity of leadership and succession planning. When feasible, committee members should be appointed to the same committee for three years to ensure consistency. The president-elect is responsible for appointing committee members to fill vacancies, appointing committee chairs, and conducting planning meetings prior to the start of the year in office. It is recommended that the chair have previous experience as a member of the committee. 59 20 REASONS TO JOIN ROTARY 1. Friendship. In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friends and fellowship. It is one of the two reasons why Rotary began in Business Development. The second original reason for Rotary s beginning: everyone needs to network. Rotary consists of a cross-section of every business community. Its members come from all walks of life. Rotarians help one another, and collectively help others. 3. Personal Growth and Development. Membership in Rotary continues one s growth and education in human relations and personal development. 4. Leadership Development. Rotaryisanorganization of leaders and successful people. Serving in Rotary positions is like a college education in Leadership, learning how to motivate, influence and lead leaders. 5. Citizenship in the Community. Membership in a Rotary club makes one a better community citizen. The average Rotary club consists of the most active citizens of any community. 6. Continuing Education. Each week at Rotary there is a program designed to keep one informed as to what is going on in the community, nation and world. Different speakers, different topics. 7. Fun. Rotary is fun. A lot of fun. Each meeting is fun. The projects are fun. Social activities are fun. And the service is fun. 8. Public Speaking Skills. Many an individual who joined Rotary was afraid to speak in public. Rotary develops confidence and skill in public communication. 57

20 REASONS TO JOIN ROTARY, cont. 9. Citizenship in the World. Every Rotarian wears a pin that says: Rotary International. And every Rotarian is welcome even encouraged to attend at 32,900 clubs in 204 nations and geographical regions. There are few places on the globe which do not have a Rotary club. Make friends in both one s own community and in the world community. 10. Assistance when Traveling. Because there are Rotary clubs everywhere, many a Rotarian who has needed a doctor, lawyer, hotel, dentist, advice, etc. while traveling has found same quickly through Rotary. 11. Entertainment. Every Rotary club and district has parties and activities which provide diversion in one s business life. Rotary has conferences, conventions, assemblies and institutes, which provide entertainment in addition to Rotary information, education and service. 12. The Development of Social Skills. Every week and at various events and functions, Rotary develops one s personality, social and people skills. Rotary is for people who like people, or who want to. 13. Family Programs. Rotary provides one of the world s largest youth exchange programs high school and college clubs for future Rotarians, spouse clubs and programs, and a host of activities designed to assist family members in growth and the development of family values. 14. Vocational Skills. Every Rotarian is expected to take a part in the growth and development of his or her own profession or vocation, to serve on committees and to teach youth about one s job or vocation. Rotary helps to make one a better doctor, lawyer, teacher (or whatever one does for a living), etc. 15. The Development of Ethics. Rotarians practice a 4-Way Test which governs one s ethical standards. Rotarians are expected to be ethical in business and personal relationships. 58

20 REASONS TO JOIN ROTARY, cont. 16. Cultural Awareness. Around the world, practically every religion, country, culture, race, creed., political persuasion, language, color and ethnic identity is found in Rotary. It is a cross-section of the world s most prominent citizens from every background. Rotarians become aware of other cultures and learn to love and work with people everywhere. They become better citizens of their countries in the process. 17. Prestige. Rotary members are prominent leaders of business, the professions, art, government, sports, military, religion and all disciplines. Rotary is the oldest and most prestigious service club in the world. Its ranks are executives, managers, professionals people who make decisions and influence policy. Not everyone is invited to join Rotary. 18. Nice People. Rotarians above all are nice people; the nicest people on the face of the earth. They are important people who adhere to the policy that while it is nice to be important, it is more important to be nice. 19. The Absence of Official Creed. Rotary has no secret handshake, no secret policy, no official creed, no secret meeting or rituals. It is an open society of men and women who simply believe in helping others. 20. The Opportunity to Serve. Rotary is a service club. Its business is mankind, its product is service. Rotarians provide community service to both the local and international communities; this is the best reason, perhaps, for becoming a Rotarian: the chance to do something for somebody else. And to sense the selffulfillment which comes in the process. And the return to one s own life. Rotarians believe in service above self, it is richly rewarding. He Profits Most Who Serves the Best. 59

HOW TO PROPOSE A NEW MEMBER Proposing new members is essential to achieving Rotary s goals of providing community and international service. Every Rotarian has the privilege and obligation of seeking qualified members. In this way all club members can help their clubs achieve a full representation of the business and professional life of the community. Use form 254 EN to propose a new member. The prospective member should attend at least 3 club meetings or functions; receive the hand outs Rotary Basics (595-EN) and This is Rotary (001-EN); encouraged to visit the RI web site receive a copy of the club s pamphlet which outlines the clubs history, recent service projects and social events, and receive a basic orientation on the benefits and obligations of club membership. After the orientation and preliminary qualification by the prospective sponsor, the basic procedure by which an individual is proposed for and elected to membership in a Rotary Club is: The prospective member s name is submitted to the board of directors with Part A of the application completed by the proposer. The board ensures that the person is fully qualified and approves or disapproves the proposal within 30 days. The proposer is notified by the club secretary. Note: until this approval is granted, prospective members should not be informed that they have been proposed for membership. The prospective member is further informed of the privileges and responsibilities of being a Rotarian and invited to join the club. He or she is then be asked to complete Part B of the application. The prospective member s name is published to the club members. If no objections are received within seven days, that person, upon payment of an admission fee is inducted as a new Rotarian with a dignified ceremony at club meeting. The club secretary sends a New Member Report form to RI and the District. 60

HOW TO PROPOSE A NEW MEMBER Summary of Membership Provisions for New Members General Qualifications: Rotarians are adults of good character and good business or professional reputation who hold or have held an executive position with discretionary authority in any worthy and recognized business or profession or who serve or have served as a community leader or who is a Rotary Foundation alumna. No more than 10% of a club s membership should hold the same classification. Keys to Membership Development: Recruitment Retention Extension 61

HOW TO START A NEW CLUB Each year hundreds of new Rotary clubs are formed. Organizing a new Rotary club is a fundamental responsibility of the District Governor. If you have interest or information about the viability of forming a new Rotary club, please consult with the District Governor or his/her special representative. There are several forms that must be completed to organize a new Rotary club: Organization of a New Club Survey Form This survey is required and it is the first part of the process. Completed by the District Governor, (or his designated surveyor) this form provides information about the locality, its population and economic outlook, principal industries, activities and institutions, other service organizations, possible meeting places, etc. New Club Sponsor Form (If applicable) Sponsor clubs must have a minimum of 20 members. The club membership must vote to be a sponsor club not the club board of directors. The form requires the signature of both the club president and secretary. New Club Membership Application Form This is the official form for applying for membership in Rotary. It requires the signatures of the provisional club president, secretary, the district governor and special representative. The form will list the charter officers and directors, the name of the club, a description of the locality, the day, time and place of weekly meetings, the dates for the club s annual meeting and monthly board meetings, the admission fees and annual list of the charter members (20 minimum). 159 The Business Directory & Rotary In 1905, Chicago lawyer Paul Harris called three friends to a meeting to form a club that would kindle felowship and networking within the business community. This meeting resulted in what we now know as Rotary International. This directory has been put together so that all Rotarians within District 7980 will be able to come to know or network with other Rotarians in the business community. As Rotarians, we all espouse the Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions. This Declaration was adopted by the Rotary International council on Legislation in 1989 to prvide more specific guidelines for the ethical standards called for in the Object of Rotary. We hope that the reader will use this directory to help them find business and professionals who hold the high ethical standards held by Rotarians.
