Vol 89 No: 11 From District Governor Randy Pote May, 2016 Randy Pote District Governor In this Edition Governor's Message Council on Legislation Global Scholar to Cambridge, England Upland Rotary Club "Just Read" Program Balloon Wrangling Ever want to be a ballon wrangler in a parade? Now's your chance. RI Convention May 28 - June 1 We start out this month s article with the celebrations of Rotary achievements. As if he hasn t done enough for District 5300, Rotary and me already, my District Aide, Richard Reed rang the bell for the Las Vegas WON Rotary Club charter night on April 29, celebrating the largest number of charter members in the 111-year history of Rotary. Yes I said 125 members. This is largest and a new record by 34 charter members to come into the Rotary world. The club is using cutting edge technology and innovations to pave the way for new Clubs all over the world. I had the opportunity to be at headquarters in Evanston two weeks ago and Las Vegas WON Rotary Club was one topic during the Board of Directors meeting. An excellent accomplishment President Richard and Las Vegas WON Rotary Club! RYLA, chaired by Governor Nominee John Chase, saw the largest number of students ever to participate. The 1000 Pines camp was the location where Rotarians and 11th graders from throughout District 5300 had their lives changed. A huge thanks to John, his incredible committee, the Rotarians who traveled to the camp to work with these students and the Clubs who sent students. The last weekend of the month, Rotarians traveled to Mexico for Super Build to change lives by building four homes for those less-fortunate. Congratulations to chair Robin Smith for coordinating this project. Super Build is a very popular project for our District and Robin did a great job gathering pledges and volunteers to work. Congratulations are in order for Walnut Valley Rotarian Fred Latuperissa. Fred was recently named this year s recipient of the prestigious Stanley T. Olafson award by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. This award is presented each year to an outstanding member of the world trade community in Southern California. Some of the excellent company Fred now joins as past recipients of the Olafson award are past Mayors of Los Angeles, Fletcher Bowron, Sam Yorty, Tom Bradley and distinguished individuals such as Walt Disney and Jack Warner, of Warner Bros. Fred has had a long career in Rotary in multiple Districts and was The Rotarian of the Year in his year as president of both the Temecula and Ontario, California clubs. This month we will celebrate a fantastic Rotary year at our District Conference at the Horton Grand Hotel in San Diego, May Meal packages are available on Dacdb right now. We have some surprises awaiting those who are in attendance. Thank you to co-chairs Suzanne Edson and Richard Reed for their tireless work. These are the same two chairs who brought you the wonderful Foundation dinner in January. All break-out sessions will be held in the luxurious theater adjacent to the Horton Grand Hotel. Also, the finals of the Dan Stover Music and Four Way Test Speech contests will be held in the same theatre. Thank you to PDG Roy York and Pasadena Rotarian Steve Schwaber for chairing the Music and Speech programs. For those Rotarians who contributed time and to those supporting the District through the purchase of advertisements in the souvenir program, I thank you. Our International Convention begins in Seoul, South Korea on May 29 and many District Rotarians are planning on attending. More than 40,000 Rotarians worldwide have registered and it is rumored to be the most technology-savvy Convention to date. Safe travel to all attending and bring back memories! Yours in Rotary spirit and service, Randy Pote
District 5300 Governor cell Council on Legislation REPORT ON THE 2016 COUNCIL ON LEGISLATION (COL) Roger Schulte, Past District Governor, District 5300 Representative The Council on Legislation (COL) is Rotary s legislature and meets every three years to consider changes to the policies that govern Rotary International and its member clubs. It holds the authority to amend Rotary s constitutional documents. The Council is made up of one representative from every Rotary district in the Rotary world. These 534 representatives are the voting members of the Council. As your District 5300 nominated PDG, I had the honor to serve as your 2016 COL voting representative in Chicago April 11-15, How does it work? The Council considers proposals by Rotary clubs, districts, RI officers, and the RI Board for changes in the way Rotary and the Rotary Foundation operate at every level of the organization. Legislation may be proposed by a club or via the district conference. These proposals must be endorsed by the district before they can be forwarded to the Council. We reviewed and discussed the 456 pages of 181 proposed enactments and resolutions over 5 days. The meetings were never boring and some of the discussions and debates were intense. I came to appreciate the internationality of Rotary, listening to proposals that were germane or important because of cultures, traditions, or issues in other parts of the world. These changes will be reflected in the 2016 Manual of Procedure. Click here to view the full report and the major changes which impact our clubs. There s a lot to digest. Enjoy PDG Roger Schulte had the honor and disticntion of being the representative from District 5300 during this year's COL. Global Scholar to Cambridge, UK
San Marino Rotary s 2nd Global Scholar to Cambridge (UK) Rotary International has just approved Gaelen Stanford-Moore for a Global Grant Scholarship. She graduated from South Pasadena High School in 2008, and from the University of California Berkeley in She majored in Molecular and Cell Biology, with a minor in Global Poverty and Practice, focused on healthcare delivery in third-world countries. She graduated Summa Cum Laude. Stanford-Moore has completed her third year of medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, and will take one year off from medical school to pursue a Masters in Public Health, before returning to UCSF to complete her medical degree and start residency training in the field of women s health as an obstetrician gynecologist. She plans a career as a physician dedicated to global health research and medical care for the underserved. Her scholarship is worth more than $60,000. Her area of focus, limited by Rotary to be one or more of six, is Disease Prevention and Treatment. During the summer of 2014, she lived in Kisumu, Kenya, coordinating the implementation of her qualitative study, interviewing 50 couples about their views on HIV therapy and prevention. During this year abroad, she plans to collaborate on the study treatment options for Kenyan children with severe febrile illness. She is the second Global Scholar to be so named in the entire Rotary District 5300 (comprised of 62 Clubs). The Rotary Club of San Marino has had 23 of its candidates accepted by District 5300 and Rotary International under the former Ambassadorial Scholar program. Ms. Stanford-Moore has host sponsors in the Rotary Club of Sawston, in Cambridge. Stanford-Moore was aided in the application and interview process by local Rotarian Bill Payne, and with the Rotary International online Global Grant Record by Club president Mike Driebe, and Marilyn Diaz, of the Rotary Club of Sierra Madre (the District 5300 Global Grants Scholar chair). Classes begin October 1, He program is for a term of one year. Stanford-Moore joins an elite group of Rotary-sponsored Scholars who have matriculated to Italy, Australia, Spain, Hong Kong, Belgium, Scotland, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, Chile and South Africa. District 5300 Global Scholar Gaelen Stanford-Moore 3rd from left. Follow up on Grant
Our District celebrates the second Global grant scholar for this Rotary year. Both were submitted by the San Marino club. It is interesting the initial application was denied by R. I., but at the urging of Governor Randy, Assistant Governor and committee member, Marilyn Diaz, wrote a brilliant appeal and the application was accepted. Randy contacted his Governor classmate recently to get the final piece of assistance from Rotary in England. Congratulations to Gaelen and a huge thank you to the San Marino club. In their history, including the former Ambassadorial Scholor program, this is the 25th scholarship! Just Read Since 2010, the Rotary Club of Upland has sponsored the "Just Read" program whereby we provide age-appropriate books to students in Title I schools in grades kindergarten through second grade. Each child is given 3 to 5 books to take home and keep in their own library. Rotarians visit the schools, read one of the books to the children and then distribute the books to the children to take home and keep. Our club works closely with the literacy teachers at the schools to ensure that age appropriate books are provided to the students. Studies have shown that children who have books and materials as part of their home environment are more likely to succeed in developing life-long skills throughout their lives as well as being more likely to complete more of their formal education. (M.D.R. Evan, "Family Scholarly Culture and Educational Success: Books and Schooling in 27 Nations") The distribution of books takes place two times per year with the first distribution right before the Christmas break and the other at the end of the school year. The program benefits at least 1,200 children; and a minimum of 4,800 books are distributed. This past year, Rotary Club of Upland President Elizabeth McDonough Barry wrote and presented a grant application to her sorority, Kappa Delta requesting funds from its literacy program entitled, "KiDs". Kappa Delta Foundation awards grants to local causes which work to increase literacy among children. Kappa Delta Foundation awarded the Rotary Club of Upland $2,500 for our "Just Read" program. The influx of the funds enabled the Rotary Club of Upland to expand its program to include third graders. Rotary Club of Upland distributed dictionaries and one storybook to third graders. This year, the number of books and children assisted with our "Just Read" program more than surpassed our prior years. Rotary's motto is "Service Above Self." Kappa Delta Sorority's open motto is, "Let us strive for that which is honorable, beautiful and highest." Selfless service is indeed honorable, beautiful and highest. Rotarians adding faceplates and donors names to books. Balloon Wrangling Opportunity
Dear Rotarians, July 4th is soon upon us and you have an opportunity to put your Service Above Self to work, for yourself or your club. Monday July 4th is Independence Day to some and The Summerlin Council Patriots Parade to others. You have the chance of a lifetime to be a BALOON WRANGLER. As a balloon wrangler, you will get to tether a parade size balloon much like the Macy s parade balloons that you see on TV, just slightly smaller. You will earn $40 towards your Paul Harris Fellow Award, to be given to each Rotarian. A non - Rotarian Volunteer will earn the same $40 as you towards YOUR Paul Harris Fellow Award. All that is required to earn the $40 donation to Paul Harris is to give a part of your July 4th Morning to the balloon wrangling duties. Good walking and standing shoes are required. Khaki pants or shorts are required. Summerlin Council provides your T-shirt. You will get to assist with the inflation and deflation of the balloons. You will tether the balloon for it s 1 ¼ mile route. During this time, rotary friendships will be developed as you walk the parade route, dancing with the balloon. This will be the 22nd Annual Summerlin Council Parade. Southern Nevada Rotary members opportunity is limited to the first 45 folks to register with Gregg Townsend at threeg69@gmail.com or by phone, You will be providing Gregg with Your name, Your club s name, t-shirt size and rotary number. Your rotary number is required to receive you or your family s $40 credit for the Paul Harris Fellow Award. Once registered, additional details such as meeting location, parking spots, balloon assignments and more will all be done. Don t forget the sunscreen and have a good time! We would like to thank the Summerlin Council for this opportunity towards our Paul Harris Society goals.
