Rotary District 5020 Newsletter The Best Gear in Town Volume I Issue 2 August 2010 Governor Bob Embarks on Royal Tour of 5020 by Bob Martin District Governor I have just completed my 13th Club visit and will have done 19 by the end of the month. Our first visit was with Royal Oak Centennial and they were gentle, which I appreciated. Then we caught a little of Campbell River Daybreak s energy on our way to Port McNeill and Port Hardy. The beauty and friendliness of the North Island is spectacular. I hope the Clubs I have visited have enjoyed the experience as much as I have. It is a real pleasure to tell the Rotarians of our District what a great job they are doing! PDG Alex tried to warn me how busy things can get, but you can t imagine until you are there. If I fail to respond to any of you in a timely way it is simply because I am behind, but I will catch up so be patient. We continue to dialogue with the Gates Foundation on homelessness and we hope we will be successful in obtaining a grant which we will then make available to Clubs in the US for dealing with issues affecting the Queen Jan and her court visit the the Poulsbo North Kitsap Club.Actually, this bevy of beauties are Princesses from North Kitsap Communities on the US side of the District. Also appearing, the Queen s Consort, DG Bob Martin. homeless; education, jobs, medical care, food, and prevention. Look for an announcement in September or October. We had three great PR grant applications, but we could only submit one and that went to Campbell River. Congratulations, Campbell River! I hope we can find money for the Gig Harbor and Tacoma proposals because they were great also. I thank everyone who worked on these proposals; we have such great Clubs. See District Governor, page 3

Bainbridge Celebrates 50th Successful Rotary Auction And Rummage Sale Bainbridge Island Rotary Club held its 50th Annual Auction and Rummage Sale on June 26th, raising a total of $348,000. The Auction, which began in 1960 with Rotarians picking up small amounts of donations to be auctioned and sold, has become an event that today that involves hundreds of community volunteers who work with Bainbridge Rotarians for months in advance to prepare the event. Donations range from as small as a book to as big as a truck and are accepted for six days prior to the event. The Auction and Rummage Sale utilizes an entire middle school campus, with the gracious consent of the Bainbridge Island School District. Unsold goods are given to Goodwill and similar organizations and, as much as possible, are extensively recycled. Plans are already in motion preparing for the 51st Auction and Rummage Sale next year! District Governor, continued from page 1 I have to apologize for suggesting that July was Literacy Month: I guess I m not too literate! But all of the comments and contacts are still valid, just not timely think March! This month, however, is Membership and Extension Month and our District Chair, Michael Syer, has some great plans. He will be coordinating with District PR Chair John Challender and hosting four seminars throughout the District. The first two will be on the US side of the border, Sep. 18 in Tumwater and Sept 19 in Silverdale. Then, on Vancouver Island, there will be one on October the 16th in Qualicum Beach and one on the 23rd in Duncan. Further details will be on the website as places are confirmed, and Michael and John will be communicating with Clubs directly. Anyone with an interest in membership, PR, or Rotary should attend. The cost will be nominal and Clubs should be supporting this financially. This is an exciting time for Jan and me. Thank you all for this opportunity to serve as your District Governor. We are looking forward to each and every visit. Even if you are not a Garagadier, the Bainbridge Island Auction & Rummage Sale is a community event for all to attend. Be Proud and Have Fun! Bob 3

Our Rotary World by Norm Watts District Trainer Our Rotary World is a wonderful family of more than one million Rotarians from over 200 countries and geographical areas who value the motto Service Above Self, enjoy great fellowship, emphasize high ethical standards, and seek the development of world understanding and peace. Rotary Friendship and Fellowship Last week my wife and I had another opportunity to enjoy the friendship and fellowship which is so much a part of being a Rotarian. We were the hosts for two Rotarians visiting from Australia who were members of a District 5020 Friendship Exchange with District 9780, west of Melbourne. The Friendship Exchange Program allows Rotarians and their partners to travel to another district in the Rotary world to be greeted by Rotarians in the host country. For a two-week stay eleven Rotarians from Australia were met by Rotarians in six clubs of our district to not only visit local tourist settings but to also learn about Rotary in District There are other Rotary programs which bring Rotarians together for fellowship. Rotary Fellowships offer opportunities to share common interests with other Rotary members worldwide. There is the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians (IFFR) which organizes events where members fly-in to destinations and meet for fellowship. There is an International Fellowship for Bridge Playing Rotarians (IFBPR), and there are fellowships for Rotarians interested in golfing, canoeing, fishing, and cycling to name just a few. Fellowships are organized around vocational interests as well: doctors, editors and publishers, accountants and gourmets. Rotarians on the Internet is also a popular way in which Rotarians share friendships around the world. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have now become means to meet and interact with Rotarians everywhere. The International Home Exchange Fellowship of Rotarians has a very active membership where Rotarians exchange homes wherever they live. For more information about fellowships in Rotary see: While each of us enjoys the friendship and fellowship inherent within our own Rotary clubs, there are many opportunities to do the same with Rotarians in other parts of the world. So, expand your Rotary horizons and enjoy the company of Rotarians worldwide. PS. PDG Alex Alexander and PDG Norm Watts wish to organize friendship exchanges among clubs in our district. If your club would like to take part contact Alex at alexalexander0910@hughes.net or Norm at mnwatts@shaw.ca.

Rotary Friends From Down-Under Visit District Clubs by Norm Watts Qualicum Beach was among several 5020 clubs which hosted Australian Rotarians as part of the Rotary Friendship Exchange. Preceded by a visit to the Port Hardy Club, this group of eleven from Down Under (pictured above) spent four days with the Qualicum Beach Club and host families from other nearby State of Victoria towns such as Camperdown, Portland, and Ballarat. Visits to Milner Gardens, North Island Wildlife Centre, McLean Mill, and the Parksville Beach were among the attractions thoroughly enjoyed by the Aussies. The weather was magnificent and the visitors were most impressed by the colours nd hanging baskets at the Gardens. Our friends rounded off their exchange with visits to Duncan, Victoria, Silverdale, WA, and Fife-Milton, WA. And in October, it s off to Australia for 5020 Rotarians as they complete the Exchange. 5

Operation Trackshoes Is A Rewarding Experience For Saanich Rotarians This year marked Saanich Rotary s twentieth year of participation in Operation Trackshoes, a sports festival held at the UVic Stadium for people with mental challenges. Participants from Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island performed in events which included a 25 meter walk, 100 meter relay, 25 and 50 meter wheel chair races and the wheel chair slalom. Duties for Rotarians included marshalling, starting, judging, award presentation and cooking at the event ending festivities. The event is as rewarding for the Rotarians as it is for the Participants. A successful participant displays his ribbons at UVic Stadium during Operation Trackshoes. Saanich Rotarians have helped facilitate the popular event for 20 years. For more information and pictures go to: ojects/operation-trackshoes-sunday-june-13th-2010/ 20 Yrs Perfect Attendance Set the dial to 1955 and the Rotary Golden Theater Radio Show, a series of radio dramas that Rotary produced for its 50th anniversary. Listen to all 13 episodes! For more information, go to rotary.org/en/mediaandnews/multimedia/audio/pages/ridefault.aspx John Challender (right) was recognized by the Rotary Club of Cumberland Centennial for his record of 20 years of Perfect Attendance. John is a founding member of the Cumberland Club, and was previously a member of the Strathcona Sunrise Club. CC President Allen de Jersey makes the presentation.

And in Other News...ROTARY SHORTS Chartered in 1920, Ninaimo Rotary celebrated its 90th anniversary. Over the years the club and its members many of them community leaders were responsible for the start of Nanaimo Hospital, the Upper Island Music Festival, Bowen Park, and the Rotary Bowl. More recently the club has been involved with other Rotary clubs in town to build the rest stop on the bypass at the top of Northfield Road, the Rotary Field House on Third Street and two Skateboard Parks in Nanaimo. The Bainbridge Rotary received a copy of a congratulatory letter from the President of the Republic of Uganda thanking Rotary for its participation in drilling 100 water wells. The successes were in part due to Bainbridge Island s partnership with the Kampala Ssese Island Club which obtained a 3-H grant to drill the wells.. The grand opening of the Ursus (Latin for bear ) Den at Milner Gardens and Woodland has already contributed to the education of 300 youth in the subjects of nature and garden, with an aim for them to gain a better understanding of the natural environment.qualicum Rotary participated in the construction of this classroom-like facility and also contributed textbooks. In recognition of his community service and support of many Rotary projects, Greg Ehman was honoured by the Cumberland Rotary Club with the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship. A Paul Harris Fellowship is awarded when $1000 is donated to the Rotary Foundation in the recipent s name.
