3 FINANCIAL AID AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY IN F O R M A T IO N in this B ulletin applies only to the undergraduate divisions of Cornell University in Ithaca. Separate publications are available for students interested in the M edical College or the Cornell U niversity-n ew York H ospital School of N ursing in New York City. Fellowships and other forms of assistance available to graduate students are listed in the Announcement of the Graduate School. T his B ulletin is issued for the guidance of two groups: prospective students, their parents, and counselors; and students already in residence. Correspondence from and concerning prospective students should be addressed to the D irector of Admissions, A dm inistration Building, unless specific directions to the contrary are given in the following pages. Students in residence should consult the Counselors of Students in the Adm inistration Building, unless some other procedure is definitely prescribed. SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS-IN-AID Many of the scholarships open to Freshmen are awarded on the basis of com petitive exam inations. Prospective students should therefore study this B ulletin early in the final year of secondary school, in order to be certain th at their applications are on file at the proper time and th at they make the necessary arrangem ents to take the required tests. No award to a prospective student is considered final until he has been accepted for admission and has begun his studies. T h e applicant should therefore be careful to follow every prescribed step in the procedure outlined in the General Information num ber for admission to the school or college of the University in which he desires to enroll. As indicated in the following pages, some scholarships and grants are open to all students in all divisions of the University. O thers are lim ited to students in particular schools or colleges; to m en or women only; to students who have attained sophomore, junior, or senior standing; to persons from specified geographic areas; and even, in a few instances, to special racial groups, such as Chinese or American

4 Indians. T h e donors of a large num ber of the available funds have placed emphasis on financial need as well as academic achievement. Every applicant should therefore study the entire B ulletin carefully to determ ine w hat qualifications are dem anded before subm itting an application for a scholarship or grant. LOANS Students who have successfully com pleted at least two terms in the University are eligible to apply for loans. (See page 33.) PRIZES Num erous prizes and special awards for achievem ent are listed in the pam phlet, Prize Competitions, which may be obtained at the office of the Counselors of Students in the A dm inistration Building, or by w riting to Cornell University Official Publication, 124 Roberts Place, Ithaca, N. Y. EMPLOYMENT Many Cornell students augm ent their financial resources by accepting part-tim e em ploym ent during the academic year. Assistance in securing this type of work, as well as sum m er em ploym ent, is provided by the University. For details, see the General Information num ber.

5 GENERAL SCHOLARSHIPS (Available on a com petitive basis to entering freshmen. Open to both m en and women.) CORNELL NA TIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS. (Including several John M cm ullen N ational Scholarships and the Eugene Meyer N ational Scholarship.) O pen to entering freshmen. A nnual award, $600 plus tuition. T enure, not lim ited. Twenty-five scholarships are awarded annually. Applications must be on file not later than March 1. Candidates are required to take the Scholastic A ptitude T est of the College Entrance E xam ination Board. A pplicants for these scholarships in the several regions of the U nited States m ust be of good character and personality, and m ust be thoroughly qualified for academic success at Cornell University. Final selection will be based both on capacity for scholastic achievement, and on promise of effective participation and leadership in other University activities. If the candidate plans to enter Engineering and is not eligible for the New York State Scholarships (see below), he is eligible for the John McM ullen Regional Scholarship and should apply directly for th at scholarship only. N ational Scholarship winners in the College of Engineering will be chosen from among the com petitors for the John M cm ullen Regional Scholarships. (See p. 19.) STATE CORNELL SCHOLARSHIPS. O pen to graduates of the comm on schools and academies of New York State. A nnual award, $200 reduction in tuition. T enure, eight terms. Awarded by the Commissioner of Education, after a com petitive exam ination. Apply to local high school principal, or to Commissioner of Education, Albany, New York. Students in residence who hold these scholarships should apply to the Secretary of the University for inform ation. STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS. O pen to graduates of the common schools and academies of New York State. A nnual award, $350. T enure, eight terms. Awarded by the Commissioner of Education, after a competitive exam ination. Apply to local high school principal, or to Commissioner of Education, Albany, New York. Students in residence who hold these scholarships should apply to the Secretary of the University for inform ation.

6 UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS. O pen to freshmen, m en and women. A nnual award, $200. T enure, first two years. Eighteen scholarships. Candidates for these scholarships are required to take the following tests, given in A pril by the College E ntrance E xam ination Board: the Scholastic A ptitude Test, the Achievement Test in English Composition, and any two other Achievem ent Tests. Scholarship candidates who are required to subm it the December or January Scholastic A ptitude T est of the Board as a part of their entrance requirem ents need not repeat th at particular test in A pril. All applicants for admission who wish to com pete for these scholarships must, before M arch 1, notify the D irector of Admissions, in writing, of their intention to compete, and arrange w ith the College Entrance Exam ination Board for the Tests above specified. GEORGE W. LEFEVRE SCHOLARSHIPS. (Gift under the will of George W. Lefevre 89.) O pen to freshm en m en and women. A nnual award, $400. T enure, not lim ited. Awarded to the first five winners in the University Scholarship com petition, w ith financial need also considered. In applying for this scholarship, the applicant should follow the same procedure and take the same tests as when applying for the University U ndergraduate Scholarship (see above). O pen to regularly enrolled students in good standing who are certified by the President of the University as being worthy of financial assistance. A nnual award, approxim ately $200. T enure, not limited. CORNELL ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIPS. O pen to m en and women, including freshmen. A nnual awards vary. Cash awards. T enure, usually four years. Awarded by the President of the University to candidates nom inated by the Clubs. A pplication to be m ade to the president of the appropriate Cornell Club. Y.), New England, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Rochester, Syracuse, and T renton (N. J.). ALEXIS CRUTTENDEN MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIP. (Gift under the will of Mary Cruttenden Percy.) Open first to descendants of Alexis H. C ruttenden; second to graduates of H averling H igh School, Bath, New York, who are residents of the town of Bath, New York, and who propose to take up the study of medicine; th ird to graduates of said school and who are residents of Bath, New York. A nnual award, $200. Cash award. Tenure, not limited. Intelligence and financial need considered. HARRY C. DAVIS COLORADO ENDOWMENT FUND. (Gift of H arry C. Davis.) A fund set up for the financial relief of needy students in emergencies, such as illness which involves a working student in heavy expense for hospitalization, doctor s bills and loss of working time, for which the U niversity s scholarship funds cannot be used and in which loan funds obviously cannot afford perm anent relief. EDWIN G. VAIL FUND. (Gift under the will of Edw in G. Vail.) Open to students from Dutchess County, New York. A nnual award, $400. Cash award. T enure, not lim ited. Purpose is to assist a student of dem onstrated accomplishm ent and outstanding promise of prospective citizenship. MABEL ESTEY ROSE SCHOLARSHIP. (Gift under the will of M abel Estey Rose.) O pen to women, w ith preference for juniors and seniors of direct New England descent. Awarded on the basis of character, scholarship and need. A nnual award, approxim ately $300. Tenure, one year. Persons declared eligible may borrow up to $600 per year, one half of the am ount borrowed to be repaid at 2% interest beginning two years after graduation or after leaving the University, one third of principal to be paid w ithin five years and the rem ainder w ithin ten years after graduation or leaving the University. Recipients m ust have good minds, sound moral opinions and beliefs, be earnest and persevering workers, and come from parents known to be or to have been good citizens and both born in the U nited States. ALBERT C. MURPHY SCHOLARSHIPS. (Gift under the will of A lbert C. M urphy.) O pen to male students w ith preference to those entering from the city of East St. Louis, Illinois. A nnual award, $1400. O pen to boys who have satisfactorily com pleted at least three years of 4-H Club work including the preceding year, and who graduate from high school w ith a scholastic standing in the upper half of their class.
