Message From President Charles Warne Many thanks to those volunteers who helped out for the P3 Stars and Stripes bike race over the week end. The event was very successful and bodes well for our Club event this coming September. John Tripoli and Dan McNamara deserve our compliments on the organization of our participation. This year our CART collections have fallen short of our expected collection and I would ask everyone to dig deep for the final two meetings for the wonderful cause of Coins for Alzheimer s Research. Congratulations to Louis Redmond who was recognized at our last meeting for his extensive work at Holiday lights and at our Club meetings. Louis was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow on behalf of our Club. Chuck Head who works at the Science Center and has been the backbone of the Holiday lights event for many years and now retired was recognized at the Salute to Education dinner hosted by the Rotary Club of Greenville on the May 19 th. 3 Dr. Judith S. Prince Receives Leadership Greenville's Distinguished Alumni Award Leadership Greenville Alumni annually recognize a graduate of the Leadership Greenville Program for their outstanding civic and community contributions with the Distinguished Alumni Award. This year's winner is Dr. Judith S. Prince. Dr. Prince is Vice Chancellor of the University of South Carolina Upstate Greenville Campus. Dr. Prince was a member of Class 30 of Leadership Greenville and served as Chair of the Board of Regents for Leadership Development Programs as well as chair of the Leadership Development Issues Series. So far in 2011 alone, she has received the Amy K. Stubbs YWCA Women of Achievement in Education in 2011, the Rotary Club of Greenville Career Award, and the Calder D. Ehrmann Outstanding Individual Award for Diversity from the Riley Institute at Furman University. Congratulations Graduates The Greenville Chamber's signature Leadership Greenville program graduated 55 participants on May 26. Congratulations to these Class 37 Graduates from the Rotary Club of Greenville! Karen Burgess Fred W. Suggs, III Rotary changes R-85 rule Every three years senior Rotary leaders from around the world meet for what is called the Council on Legislation. This is the body that considers changes affecting the operation of Rotary International and all Rotary Clubs. The 2010 Council on Legislation voted to change the R-85 rule so that a Rotarian must be at least 65 before seeking to become exempt from attendance requirements. In the past, a Rotarian seeking to be exempt from attendance rules had to reach the number 85 through a combination of that person s age and years of service in Rotary. Thus, it was possible for a person who was 60 years old and had been a Rotarian for 25 years to gain an exemption from attendance requirements. The change in 2010 is a major one. The R-85 rule now requires that members now must be at least 65 years old before they are allowed to apply for an exemption from mandatory attendance at meetings. Age plus years in Rotary still must total 85. Rotary International was silent on what should happen to those club members who had been excused from mandatory attendance based on the rule prior to The Rotary Club of Greenville s board of directors voted to grandfather in existing R-85 members who are younger than 65 years old barring a subsequent RI directive to the contrary. Discussion from the 2010 Council on Legislation meeting made it clear that Rotarians around the world were facing a growing trend: People have been joining Rotary at an earlier age and many are seeking exempt status in their late 50s or early 60s. With Rotary International facing declining membership, there was a concern that many clubs are facing challenges accomplishing their goals and remaining vibrant as members were becoming eligible for exempt status long before they retired from work.
4 Greenville Club Attendance Ranks in Bottom Half of District There are many ways you can still receive credit if you cannot attend your club meeting: Most importantly you need to report your make-up and talk to the Club Administrator if there is an error. Click here to report a make-up

6 LOCAL AGENCIES RECEIVE NEEDED FUNDS Steve Hand, left, director of Quick Jobs for Greenville Technical College, received a check from Rotary Charities at the club's May 24th meeting, from Club President Charles Warne and Charities Secretary Beth Padgett. Four Greenville charitable organizations received grants totaling $10,000 at the Rotary Club of Greenville s May 24th meeting. Receiving grants were: Harvest Hope, $3,000, for weekend food backpacks for children who are at risk for hunger when school is not in session; Greenville Literacy, $2,000, for Serving Adults on Lowest Literacy Levels program; Greenville Tech, $2,000, for the Quick Jobs program that allows adults to quickly obtain skills needed for a new job; and Meals on Wheels, $3,000, for meals for clients with special dietary needs. The grants were funded with some of the money earned through the Rotary Club s Roper Mountain Holiday Lights project. Other funds raised through Holiday Lights go to supplement the college scholarship fund that also depends on the $50 Charities contribution that club members donate annually; for the club s multi-year international project in Haiti; the continuing operations of the Rotary Family Literacy Center at the YWCA; Salute to Education; the Roper Mountain Science Fair; Teacher of the Year awards; and other club programs that include Read-to-Me and Money Smart. Club members work hard every fall setting up the displays for Holiday Lights, and then devote time during the busy holiday season to make this project a huge success. The Holiday Lights Committee works throughout the year on this important project. The local grants awarded last month are some of the fruits of the labor of our club s dedicated members. The grants are awarded on a competitive basis to charitable organizations in the Greenville community. Rotary Charities Inc., the 501(c)3 organization founded by this club, oversees the charitable dollars of our club. Rotary Charities is governed by a separate board of directors so as to fully comply with IRS expectations.
