1 Volume 58 Issue 15 Issue Date: February 7, 2013 Next Meeting: February 12, 2013 Judge Michelle Childs On August 20, 2010, President Barack Obama appointed J. Michelle Childs to the position of United States District Court Judge. Judge Childs chambers are in Greenville, South Carolina. Prior to the federal court she served as an At-Large Circuit Court Judge, including having responsibilities as the Chief Administrative Judge for General Sessions and Business Court for the Fifth Judicial Circuit of Richland and Kershaw Counties. Judge Childs also had the distinct honor of being appointed by Governor James Hodges as a Workers Compensation Commissioner ( ) and served as the Deputy Director for the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation s Division of Labor ( ). Judge Childs was formerly a Partner with the law firm of Nexsen Pruet Jacobs & Pollard, LLP, in Columbia, South Carolina, where she practiced in the areas of employment and labor law and general litigation. As a practicing lawyer and judge, she has lectured and served frequently on panels for topics regarding litigation and trial techniques, courtroom practices and procedures, discovery and expert witness issues, and diversity. Judge Childs has been very active with local, state and national bar organizations, and community organizations.

2 President s Message Congratulations to the Holiday Lights Team under the chairmanship of Dick Kosa for another record year! The numbers are in and there were 351 more cars than last year when we didn t think we could squeeze one more car in the gate! We netted approximately $5, more than last year and split $130,000 with $65,000 each to Rotary Charities and Roper Mountain Science Center. An extensive electrical upgrade was made last year, and we kept some in reserve for more upgrades. This has resulted in our revenue from Holiday Lights being $10,000 less than last year. With the money that was raised from the Singing Christmas Tree Alumni Concert we will be able to cover much of the shortfall in our Rotary Charities budget. Holiday Lights is a six- month effort with many moving parts. We have a couple more weeks to go and everything will be put away from the 2012 show. The work doesn t stop there. The Holiday Lights committee will now be talking about next season, identifying sponsors, gearing up for new marketing and advertising efforts and strategizing how to increase our gross and minimize expenses. The new Holiday Lights Board will be strategizing about how to sustain and modernize the event with the goal to raise more money to make a bigger impact in the community we serve. Looking to the remainder of the club year, we are chartering the Early Act First Knight program and inducting the new officers at Lead Academy on February 7 th. The kids have elected an energetic young girl as their first President which makes me smile! We hope this program leads our young leaders to Interact, Rotaract and eventually Rotary! The Bike committee is gearing up with Bikar at ICAR, a family friendly race on August 24 th. We will be putting out the call for volunteers soon for this one day event. The Membership recruiting effort is in full swing and we approved six new members at our last Board meeting with more in the works. We hope to reach 300 or more by the end of our year. The Diversity Committee is hosting a recruiting breakfast on February 28 th. We are in need of table hosts so I hope you will consider this when asked. The breakfast is a culmination of a dedicated group of our members who are passionate about growing the club with diverse members of our community. We have identified African American, Hispanic, young professional and international candidates who are already actively engaged in service above self. The face of Greenville is changing and we are changing with it. Watch for a concerted effort to grow our CART donations over the next few months. Not only do we need to meet our District goals, but also there are very few club members who have not been touched by Alzheimer s disease in their family or circle of friends. 4 Fellow Rotarian, Rotary Leadership Institute March 9, 2013 The last in-district Rotary Leadership Institute for Rotary Year 2012/2013 will be held on March 9th. (This date was changed from March 23rd to avoid conflicts with PETS.) The meeting will again be in the BMW building on the Tyger River Campus of Spartanburg Community College in Duncan, SC. This has proven to be a great facility for RLI, and is just off I-85 and close to I-26 and I-385. Need: At least 50 Rotarians Logistics: The student will meet the Rotarian at 11:30 am at Westin and then enjoy lunch together.
