2 PURPOSE OF AWARDS The University of Technology Sydney s alumni community is filled with passionate, creative and innovative leaders, who are making a difference in our world and inspiring those around them. The annual UTS Alumni Awards celebrate the exceptional achievements of these alumni. Nominations for the 2016 UTS Alumni Awards open on Tuesday 5 April. We seek nominations for alumni who have: Achieved success in professional, academic or research areas, Demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation and creativity, and Contributed to the community through their work Nominations are accepted online via a convenient and easy-to-use portal. 3 AWARD CATEGORIES FACULTY AWARDS Faculty awards recognise outstanding achievement by graduates from each of UTS s seven faculties. Nominations should articulate the success and impact nominees have had in their chosen field. Alumni do not have to be working in the discipline from which they graduated. SPECIAL AWARDS Community Alumni Award This award recognises the significant involvement of UTS alumni in projects that enrich the community at a local, national or international level. This contribution could be in a professional, charitable, cultural or sporting capacity. Indigenous Australian Alumni Award A new category introduced in 2016 to reflect UTS s strong commitment to nurturing the next generation of Indigenous thinkers, creators and leaders. This award recognises outstanding achievement by a UTS alumnus who is an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander. The category celebrates exceptional professional achievement and/or significant contribution to Indigenous people and/or Australian society more broadly. International Alumni Award sponsored by UTS: INSEARCH This award recognises outstanding achievement by an alumnus who was enrolled as an international student when attending UTS. Candidates may currently reside in Australia or overseas. CHANCELLOR S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE This award is presented by the UTS Chancellor to one of the faculty or special category award winners. The award recognises a graduate with a sustained record of outstanding achievement who is seen as a leader of their field. The recipient of this award is welcomed to the UTS Luminaries. UTS Luminaries have a reputation which is widespread and acknowledged their achievements have earned them national or international prominence. Members of this group include actor Hugh Jackman, author Anna Funder, and human rights activist Senator Sekai Holland. See more at: alumni.uts.edu.au/luminaries Young Alumni Award This award recognises outstanding achievement by an alumnus aged 35 years and younger (at close of nominations on 20 May). This category celebrates the accomplishments of younger alumni given their shorter career span. 2

4 ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA All nominations must be submitted online via the official UTS Alumni Awards portal by 5pm on Friday 20 May Award recipients must be graduates of UTS or one of our six antecedent institutions: Acupuncture Colleges Australia Balmain Teachers College Kuring-gai College of Advanced Education New South Wales Institute of Technology Sydney College of Advanced Education The School of Design, Sydney College of the Arts Permission must be obtained from an alumnus before submitting a nomination. A graduate can be nominated for more than one award. Self-nominations are not accepted. UTS Luminaries and past UTS Alumni Award recipients are not eligible. Previously nominated alumni who were unsuccessful may be renominated. Nominees for the Young Alumni Award must be aged 35 years and younger at the close of nominations on 20 May Nominees for the International Alumni Award must have been enrolled as international students. They may currently reside in Australia or overseas. The Selection Panel is made up of UTS representatives. The Panel reserves the right to reallocate nominations between categories and the decision of the Selection Panel is final and conclusive. Promotion: UTS reserves the right to use award recipients names and images in the media and UTS publications in the context of the UTS Alumni Awards. SELECTION PROCESS AND DETERMINATION OF AWARDS Faculty Awards All nominees for Faculty Awards are considered by the Dean of that Faculty and a Community Alumni Award the Director of Equity and Diversity and a Indigenous Australian Alumni Award the Director of Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning and a shortlist is presented to International Alumni Award a UTS: International representative and a Young Alumni Award Nominees for this award are considered by a UTS representative and a shortlist of three candidates is presented to the Selection Panel for final consideration. Chancellor s Award for Excellence The winner of this award is selected by the UTS Chancellor. 3
