3 NOMINATIONS OPEN 20 OCTOBER 2008 (Week 2, Term 4) Now is the time to nominate your students, teachers, schools, community members and regions for a Nanga Mai Award! The Department of Education and Training is proud to present the Annual NSW Schools Nanga Mai Awards to be held at Sydney s Powerhouse Museum on Tuesday, 24 March What are the Nanga Mai Awards? The Annual NSW Schools Nanga Mai Awards celebrate and recognise innovation, excellence and achievement in Aboriginal education in New South Wales public schools, school communities and Department of Education and Training regional and state offices. Awards will be presented to selected high-achieving Aboriginal students, Aboriginal and non-aboriginal teachers, staff, community members, schools and regions. Why have the Nanga Mai Awards? The awards extend from the key principle underpinning the current NSW Aboriginal Education Policy that includes the aim to promote the educational achievements of Aboriginal students. They also reflect the key actions of the NSW Aboriginal Education and Training Strategy, : recognising the talents and achievements of Aboriginal staff, students, parents and community members, and promoting the process of Reconciliation. Nominations should be discused with your local or regional Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG). 2
4 What are the Award Categories? Student Awards: Encouragement Award (x2) Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sport (x2) Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performing/Creative/Visual Arts (x2) Student Leadership Awards (x2) Academic Excellence Award School Certificate (x2) Academic Excellence Award Higher School Certificate (x2) Highest score for an Aboriginal student in the Higher School Certificate (x1)* Highest score for an Aboriginal student in the School Certificate (x1)* * PLEASE NOTE: The Highest score for an Aboriginal student in the Higher School Certificate and Highest score for an Aboriginal student in the School Certificate award categories DO NOT attract nominations. The recipients of these awards are based on information provided to the Department by the Office of the Board of Studies. 5 What are the selection criteria? STUDENT AWARDS Encouragement Award This award is presented to Aboriginal students to encourage them to continue with their studies. The award is intended to highlight Aboriginal students achievements in the areas of excellent attendance, achieving academic potential, consistent effort and a positive attitude to school. Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sport This award is presented to Aboriginal students who have displayed notable aptitude, good sportsmanship and an outstanding achievement in their chosen sporting field/s. Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performing/Creative/Visual Arts This award is presented to Aboriginal students who have displayed a gift and/or talent/s in the performing, creative or visual arts. Student Leadership Award This award is presented to Aboriginal students who have demonstrated exceptional skill in promoting, encouraging and supporting student participation across their school and community. Aboriginal students nominated will have effective communication skills, input into school initiatives, be ambassadors to their school/community/region, be role models and maintain a positive attitude to their school and community. Academic Excellence Award - School Certificate This award is presented to Aboriginal students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in any School Certificate subject undertaken in 2008 and who display a positive attitude to school and ongoing education. Academic Excellence Award - Higher School Certificate This award is presented to Aboriginal students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in any HSC subject undertaken in 2008 and who display a positive attitude to school and ongoing education. 4
6 STAFF AWARDS Award for Outstanding Contribution to educational achievement by an Aboriginal staff member This award is presented to an Aboriginal teacher or Aboriginal Department of Education and Training employee who has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal students and to working with Aboriginal community members. Award for Outstanding Contribution to educational achievement by a non-aboriginal staff member This award is presented to a non-aboriginal teacher or non-aboriginal Department of Education and Training employee who has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal students and to working with Aboriginal community members. Regional and state office staff members are eligible for nomination. 5
7 COMMUNITY AWARDS Award for Outstanding Contribution to educational achievement by a community member This award is presented to an Aboriginal community member who has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal students and to working with Department of Education and Training personnel and other Aboriginal community members. Award for Outstanding Educational Leadership This award is presented to an Aboriginal educational leader who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal students. School Community Partnership Award This award is presented to a school community or group of communities that has developed successful partnerships leading to the development of improved school plans and/or practices. The award winner/s will have demonstrated outcomes showing evidence of innovation in partnerships with Aboriginal communities and school regions and in educational programs. Recognition of Service to Aboriginal Student Achievement in Public Education Award This award is presented to an Aboriginal DET school or non-school based Aboriginal employee who has demonstrated a significant long-term contribution and dedication to Aboriginal education in NSW Government schools. Nominees must be seen as role models and advocates for Aboriginal students as well as having projected a positive image to all NSW DET stakeholders with a minimum of ten years service in DET. Award for Outstanding School / Partnership of Schools This award is presented to a school that has demonstrated a commitment to improving the educational outcomes of Aboriginal students. Nominees must also demonstrate having developed and maintained successful partnerships with their local community which have impacted positively on school planning and practices. Award for Outstanding Regional Innovation This award is presented to a region that has demonstrated an outstanding and innovative approach to Aboriginal Education and Training. It is also an opportunity for regions to demonstrate their commitment to improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal students. 6
8 What are the Guidelines for Nomination? The nominee MUST be an Aboriginal person, for all categories except the Region, School or School Community Partnership Awards and for awards specifically for a non-aboriginal staff member. Nominees MUST fulfil ALL the selection criteria related to the relevant category to be eligible for an award. One nomination per nomination form. If nominating for more than one category, a second nomination form will have to be completed. Those who nominate another person MUST provide written support for their nominee. The written support will state the reasons why they have nominated the person/school/region or community/ies. If written support is not submitted the nomination will be considered invalid. Other attachments (apart from the written support) can be included, such as copies of transcripts of results, written references and photographs. The quality of the nomination strongly influences the selection panel s decision. Nominations MUST detail the nominator s name and be endorsed (signed) by the Regional Director to be considered a valid nomination. Nominations for student awards MUST include a completed Authority to publish form to be considered a valid nomination. State office nominations can be forwarded directly to the Aboriginal Education and Training Directorate titled Nanga Mai Awards Locked Bag 53, Darlinghurst NSW ALL nominations MUST be endorsed by the relevant Regional Director/Manager. Nominations MUST be sent to your regional office by 5pm Friday 21 November 2009 (Week 6, Term 4) or nominations will not be accepted. The 2009 Nanga Mai Awards are presented for achievements in the 2008 school year. Primary schools may nominate students who were in Years K-6 in 2008 and secondary schools may nominate students who were in Years 7-12 in It is acceptable to include in the nomination upcoming achievements in 2008 that will occur beyond the November 21, 2008 closing date.
