NEWSRUNNER President s Corner Bravo Zulu Texas ENA TX ENA Newsletter Q Steven J Jewell, BSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, USN (ret.) These are nautical flags hoisted on ships to declare job well done with regards to actions, operations, and/or performance. I d like to hoist these flags to recognize the hard work that your Texas ENA council has done so far this year. There has been numerous advancements to benefit our nurses, our departments, and our communities. First Bravo Zulu, goes to the entire Texas ENA!! The ENA has recognized the 2017 Texas ENA for another State Achievement Award. This award goes to those states that have provided exemplary service. Although, awarded in 2018, it recognizes the efforts of the previous year. Therefore, this award will be presented to Marcia Fuller, the 2017 Texas ENA President during an awards ceremony in Pittsburgh this upcoming September. Through Marcia s efforts, vision, and the hard work of her board, the committees, and members within the chapters, Texas continues to stand out among its peers across the globe! Check out the memories from the first TX ENA Conference at Sea! Pg In This Issue Word from your President Ingrid Steinbach Memorial Chapter Spotlights State Achieve- Second Bravo Zulu, I am a firm believer that my career and the care I provide should be directed by me. Which means, as a professional nurse, my job should be dictated by the decisions I make. I hope yours is as well. With that, each of us should be active in legislative matters. The Texas ENA has a long history of being active in Texas and Federal legislation. There has been an increase in bills being presented that directly impact the care ER nurses provide. Therefore, the Texas ENA, after an extensive search has hired a political consultant in Austin. This political consultant will help monitor more than 6,400 legislative bills in Texas and provide weekly updates to the Texas ENA Board on issues that need to be addressed immediately or as soon as possible. Furthermore, this individual will help coordinate the legislative mission of the Texas ENA and its members. The Texas ENA continues to work towards ensuring that we live up to our mission of safe care, safe practice. Third Bravo Zulu, the Texas ENA has a membership base reaching over 4,000. The Texas ENA Board of Directors, committee chairs, and committee members are a volunteer group of professional nurses. The Texas ENA has more than 11 highly active committees. Each month, more and more opportunities arise that the Texas ENA cannot participate in or find itself too stretched thin. Therefore, through an extensive creative process, the Texas ENA has approved a job description and budget to hire the first Texas ENA Association Operations Manager. This individual will be responsible for the day-to-day activities and requirements of the Texas ENA. As such, this individual will create and maintain relationships with our exhibitors and sponsors, assist committees in the completion of their duties, provide media assistance in promoting membership recruitment and retention, just to name a few responsibilities. Furthermore, this individual will assist the Board of Directors in maintaining records of the Council and Chapters. If you know anyone who may be interested in this position, please contact Melanie Aluotto, 2019 Texas ENA President at: ertxrn@gmail.com
Fourth Bravo Zulu, a group of nurses, more than 30 actually, have applied to the Texas ENA to become a chapter recognized by the state and national ENA. A representative group of these nurses presented their application to the TxENA council in April. They have named themselves the Brazos Valley Chapter of the ENA. It was an informative discussion that lead to a unanimous decision to grant their application! These individuals will have one-year as a special interest group to complete the required documents, timeframes, and participation to be granted full Chapter status. The Texas ENA board and council is ecstatic for this group and know they will do amazing things for their region. A pro-tem committee was established to coordinate which counties would be transitioned to this new chapter. As this group of strong leaders move through the process of being a recognized chapter, I will keep you informed. Fifth Bravo Zulu, the Texas ENA, believing in advancing the education of our nurses improves the health of our communities has made strides to increase academic scholarships. More than a year ago, the Texas ENA created the Texas Endowed Scholarship within the ENA Foundation. Currently, there is more than $30,000 in this restricted fund. The interest of this fund goes directly to an individual living in Texas. At the January, 2018 council meeting, the Texas ENA approved an additional $20, to be added to this endowment. Furthermore, the Texas ENA approved to continue providing the $5,000 Vicki Patrick Legacy Scholarship and $5,000 Mary Leblond Advocacy Scholarship. We should be hearing in July who the recipients of all the Texas scholarship winners are. During the 2018 ENA Foundation State Challenge, Texas has contributed more than $38,000 so far!! What a great achievement for our state and our nurses attending school to advance their degrees. Sixth Bravo Zulu, is for those who created, coordinated, and participated in the 2018 Texas ENA Conference at Sea. This educational event provided 10 CNEs covering a variety of topics. There were more than five states represented!! Pictures from attendees can be found on a variety of Facebook pages and may be included in this newsletter. A proposal for a 2020 Conference at Sea may be presented at the July Texas ENA council meeting. More to come! The Texas Emergency Nurses Association is an extremely active Council. Through the vast membership, there are many opportunities to advance your own leadership skills, network throughout Texas and the US, find international medical missions, and promoting injury prevention throughout our communities. It is the hope that you as a members of the ENA take an active role in the delivery of care. One of the best ways to ensure that you are atop current advances is by taking an active role in your professional nursing association. If you are interested in leadership opportunities and don t know where to start, contact me. I ll help you out! As summer is knocking on our shores I want to wish you a happy and safe summer. Take time to enjoy your own hobbies and adventures. Bravo Zulu Texas!! Steven J Jewell 2018 Texas ENA President 2018 ENA Foundation Chairperson Jst4jstn@gmail.com The Freestanding Emergency Centers Committee of the Texas Emergency Nurses Association has been working diligently to improve the care and safety of nurses and patients that are treated in the freestanding setting. Since this a new committee, I would like to first present the mission and vision statement: The Freestanding Emergency Department Committee (FSEC) of the Texas Council of the Emergency Nurses Association offers a venue for advocacy and stewardship for the freestanding emergency departments in the State of Texas. The key components of the FSEC Committee are to search for the most rigorous evidence, to recommend best-practice, to distribute our recommendations to healthcare professionals, and to educate our patient populations. The FSEC Committee vision is to foster best patient outcomes in a safe and healing environment. The committee developed a resolution that was submitted for presentation at the 2018 general assembly. This resolution requests that the Emergency Nurses Association collaborate with stake holders to define the minimum standards for staffing and training, for facility capabilities, and for patients care across lifespan and acuity continuums for hospital outpatient departments and freestanding emergency centers. The resolution also asks that the Emergency Nurses Association encourages freestanding emergency centers and hospital outpatient departments to incorporate safe practice and safe care by promoting injury prevention, patients and staff safety initiatives, and nationally recognized guidelines. During the development of this resolution, it became evident that the ENA does not have any publications regarding Freestanding Emergency Centers nor Hospital Outpatient Departments. The committee is currently focused on the development of a position statement that will be presented at the next Texas ENA meeting. I am hopeful that the ENA will adopt the position statement that the committee is currently developing. The committee actively accepts and requests any input that ENA members have including suggestions and recommendations that will assist in the support of the care and safety provided in the FSEC setting. Christopher F. Veal BSN, RN, CEN Are you thinking about advancing your education? Are you worried about how you can afford your education? TXENA offers a solution! Scholarship Qualifications and Applications are posted at Time to get yours filled out! The deadline is August 1 st,2018.

Two months into living here in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been lovely. The weather is getting hotter (low 100s with low humidity in Riyadh, high 90s with high humidity in Jeddah). I ve been told it gets much hotter than this exceeding 50 degrees Celsius (<120 F). In light of this information, I need to go buy a new light colored abaya even though it will make me stand out in a sea of women dressed in black. Since I m not much of a writer, below are bullet points of random things I ve had to adapt to in my daily life. Making sure I get use the family door or line when entering a restaurant or ordering food. The singles line is for men only. I have been barred from entering a restaurant when I ve accidentally walked into the single entrance. Being sure to wear my abaya and carry a scarf when leaving my apartment. The nice thing about the abaya is no one knows that you re wearing PJs or yoga pants and a bra underneath. I went to high tea at the Ritz Carlton wearing cut off shorts and a tank top under my abaya. In any other country I would have dressed up for this outing. I frequently will go out in just shorts and a tank top if I know I m not removing my abaya. Saudi women usually wear strictly black abayas but they tolerate expats wearing abayas of different colors. Looking up prayer times before I leave for my destination. Places will close for prayer times, which lasts anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. Shops and restaurants are not allowed to let you in or out during prayer time. Failure in observing prayer time can mean up to 30 minutes spent sitting outside the establishment (in the heat) waiting for them to unlock the door. Dust storms. The dust and sand in the air can get so bad it blocks out sunlight. Surgical masks are recommended. My incredible social life compared to back home. Moving here has allowed me to change my habit of living to work. I have had frequent discussions with other expats and they re also experiencing a more robust social life compared to back home. In short, I am finally able to balance work and life in a healthier manner. In 2 months I have been to embassy parties, compound parties, frequent dinners with friends, maasalam (farewell) dinners. I ve also picked up new hobbies such as street hockey, sand volleyball, and running. My dating life has also improved. This was a surprise to me because I expected to have no dating life here in this conservative Kingdom. My friends on Tinder are besieged with matches and requests to meet. Interpreting English from English. My life is now filled with new friends from Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland, the Phillipines, Indonesia, Finland, and New Zealand. I ve learned to say shift instead of transfer, bin instead of trash, half 6 instead of 6:30, and double 7 when I mean 77. Sometimes I it takes me a moment to translate English into American English. I am having a grand adventure here in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Please let me know what questions you have an I ll be happy to answer. My is kfgrant@live.com or you can send me a message on WhatsApp

A Tribute to Ingrid Steinbach BSN, RN, CEN Ingrid Steinbach will be cherished by Chapter 438 Rio Bravo Chachalacas and has been actively involved with it since its inception. She being a founding member and driving force behind the scenes on every level with tireless passion and contagious enthusiasm. She was like the spark plug for our chapter. She often ignited us to aspire to do better and as a result we undertook some ambitious projects, things that we d never considered doing before. She had convinced us we could be successful and as a result have provided a myriad of educational opportunities. She suggested at one of our meetings why don t we bring down a CEN review course? When we hesitantly agreed to try it, she made the arrangements to secure the speaker and location for the presentation. As a result, RBC Chapter 438 provided a 2-day presentation by an internationally renowned speaker to our members. She was the driving force behind our chapter hosting state ENA meetings. She challenged us to be the powerhouse behind our nominations for the annual Texas ENA awards. Her enthusiasm and excitement will always be inspiring and motivating and because she made us better. Ingrid was the special something that inspires the ENA chapter members to strive to do more for our community and colleagues. Ingrid was so very dedicated to excellence in emergency nursing I believe she vastly underestimated how much she contributed to the community through our local and state ENA level. She gave endless hours to assist with teaching, volunteering and running the business side of our chapter. Through her dedication to education and smart business sense she guided the local chapter to provide TNCC and ENPC classes in our area which stretches over 200 miles from end to end. She was our guiding light, an inspiration and a tremendous mentor for every emergency nurse that she met. She roused the people around her to support and commit like no other person I ever met. She was a mentor to new members and chapter officers and never hesitated to assist where and when she could. Her determination, her drive and relentless devotion to the ENA has inspired Chapter 438 RBC and countless others to give more and be more. Her contributions to the ENA are clearly demonstrated in her actions and the success of our chapter. Ingrid Steinbach left footprints on our hearts. Ingrid B. Steinbach 04/24/ /06/2018
Kelsea Bice, BSN, RN, CEN is a perfect example of an emerging leader. She exemplifies engagement and advocacy for her profession. Even as a nursing student, Kelsea was active at the local and national levels of her student organization in Louisiana. She began her nursing career as a graduate nurse in the ER at MD Anderson. After residency, she accepted a stretcher side position in the ER at Memorial Hermann Memorial City. She has been a board member of her local Houston chapter since she joined ENA in 2014 as a graduate nurse. She is enthusiastic and volunteers for multiple committees and projects at the local and state level. She is an advocate for ENA and has recruited many new nurse members to join the organization. Kelsea has brought new members to the state meetings and encourages active participation. She has served as a delegate at national assembly for two years and actively engages in conversation during general assembly. Kelsea passed her CEN last year and has advocated for certification of her peers through offering of study materials, support, and encouragement. She has volunteered to teach several lectures at the local chapter CEN review to support certification. She presented an engaging generational cohort lecture at a local and then state chapter conference to enhance the collaboration of the generational workforce and encourage emerging leader engagement. Kelsea Bice has served in the Director and Treasurer role on the Houston Chapter board and continues to be active in multiple committees and conference planning. She is currently the Houston ENA President- Elect. At the state level, Kelsea attends every meeting and actively participates on many committees. She chairs a committee at the state level and offers to take on projects to benefit the organization and members. Her tireless energy is infectious at state meetings and has kept committee meetings engaging. In August of 2017, an unprecedented natural disaster, Hurricane Harvey, devastated the Houston area. Kelsea immediately jumped into action. Along with working and living in her hospital for 5 straight days, she organized a national scrub drive through her local chapter that provided thousands of scrubs, stethoscopes, shoes, and toiletries to nurses and other healthcare workers in affected areas. The impact that she made on the lives of those who lost everything was overwhelming in their response of tearful thankfulness. She will present as a speaker at Emergency Nursing 2018 Conference this year with Melanie Aluotto and Bre Ward to share their experiences with this natural disaster. As a 3-year nurse, Kelsea takes every opportunity to precept new nurses and students to share her knowledge and experience. She has a unique perspective on the nursing profession and advocates for new nurses to be involved and give their views on process and policy to make a difference. She believes that safe practice, safe care starts with nurturing and mentoring new nurses so that they can continue the cycle and end the old thought of nurses eating their young. Kelsea has volunteered as a speaker at the local and state conference to support ENA s mission of educating Emergency Nurses. She manages the local chapter social media and ensures that educational opportunities are shared with our members and other nursing social media groups to promote education. She frequently attends ENA and non-ena educational conferences and encourages peers to attend with her. Through modeling and active participation, Kelsea enthusiastically supports ENA s mission to advocate for patient safety and excellence in emergency nursing practice through her educational promotion and mentoring. Kelsea has been chosen as one of Houston Chronicle s salute to nursing winners for She also was recognized as a Daisy Award nominee and chosen to win Houston Rodeo tickets from her facility because of her tireless engagement for her profession. It s no wonder this nominee won this year s state level award for Rising Star and was nominated for the national Rising Star Award!

Recently our board members assisted McLane Children s Medical Center in a conference geared toward educating the community on caring for children who are victims of child abuse and human trafficking. This conference was well received by our community and organizations across the state. We have many who are providing positive feedback. It was amazing to see the multidisciplinary approach and impact it made through one conference. Elizabeth Smart provided her story as our keynote speaker. There were nurses, social workers, CPS, school personnel, Legislation, foster parents, and many non-profit agencies who attended. 3fd244055a82.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source = &utm_campaign=user-share On May 19 th Central Texas partnered with McLane Children s Medical Center for their Safe Kids Day and Bike Rodeo.
