3 Health policy can be designed with little input from nursing staff creating gaps between practice and policy that impact patient care (Gebbie et al, 2000) Clinical and organisational expertise of nurses could add value (Ferguson, 2001) Few practicing nurses engage in policy development due to numerous barriers (Toofany, 2005) 3

9 Step 1: Review Review internal policies and external guidance on appropriate use of social media (NMC, 2015). Step 2: Plan Design social media engagement plan i.e. objective, audience, recruitment, platforms to use, hashtag and branding, facilitate online discussion, metrics for evaluation, dissemination. Step 3: Source Acquire additional expertise in running social media campaigns and generating analytics if necessary. Step 4: Engage Run the social media campaign, assess its outcome and impact, share the results with relevant stakeholders. 9

13 Siobhán O Connor, B.Sc., CIMA CBA, B.Sc., RN, FHEA Siobhán O Connor is a Lecturer in Nursing at the School of Health and Social Care, Edinburgh Napier University, United Kingdom. She has a multidisciplinary background with honours B.Sc. Nursing and B.Sc. Business Information Systems. She teaches nursing and informatics at undergraduate and postgraduate level and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
