STRATEGIC EXCHANGE SESSIONS will take place during the following times 7:10am-7:40am 11:00am-11:20am 12:40pm-1:00pm NPUAP 2014 Consensus Meeting Results Sheri Moss Harrison, MPT, CWS, Saint Alphonsus Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine; President, Idaho Pressure Ulcer Prevention Coalition, Boise, Idaho 8:00am-8:30am (.50) In February of this year, the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) hosted The Unavoidable Outcome: A Pressure Injury Consensus Conference. This event was designed to develop consensus on what variables/factors place an individual at risk for development of an unavoidable pressure ulcer. 1. Participants will know the definition of an unavoidable pressure ulcer 2. Participants will be able to identify 5 different patient diagnoses that would place the patient at risk for developing an unavoidable pressure ulcer 3. Participants will be able to identify those patients at risk in the continuum of care for developing an unavoidable pressure ulcer Can We Afford Not to Prevent? Courtney H. Lyder, ND, ScD(Hon), FAAN, Dean and Assistant Director, UCLA Health System, Professor of Nursing, Geriatric Medicine & Public Health, Executive Director, UCLA Health System Patient Safety Institute, University of California, School of Nursing, Los Angeles, California 8:30am - 9:30am (1.00) This session will discuss how to demonstrate to senior leadership that investing in resources to prevent pressure ulcers will reduce the direct and indirect costs associated with treating hospital acquired pressure ulcers. We will look at strategies for data gathering, analysis and documentation. Key supporting literature will be reviewed 1. Identify positive relationships between proven interventions and their cost versus cost to treat 2. Describe documentation that promotes the link between prevention of pressure ulcers, and costs associated with caring for pressure ulcers 2 P age

3 Simple Protocols for Prevention and Management of Incontinence Associated Dermatitis Dorothy Doughty, MN, RN, CWOCN, FAAN, Director Emory University WOC Nursing Education Program, Atlanta, Georgia 9:45am - 10:45am (1.00) Incontinence Associated Dermatitis is a very common and painful type of skin breakdown, and it increases the patient s risk for pressure ulcer development; thus prevention and early intervention are critical nursing responsibilities. Fortunately, we now have the knowledge and the products to effectively prevent or promptly manage IAD; however, the wide array of products can result in confusion as to which product to use when. This session will focus on the importance of simple consistent protocols to provide evidence based prevention and management of IAD. 1. Explain the importance of prevention and early intervention for the patient at risk for IAD 2. Discuss appropriate use of absorptive and containment products for the patient at risk for IAD 3. Explain key strategies for promoting staff compliance with IAD prevention protocols 4. Identify the 4 products and 3 care categories that comprise an effective IAD protocol 10:45am - 11:30am POSTER & STRATEGIC EXCHANGE SESSIONS 10:55am-11:15am Using Health Coaching to Encourage Compliance in Wound Care Patients Sharlene Green, PsyD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Medical Psychologist, Veteran's Administration, Boise, Idaho 11:30am-12:15pm (0.75) Health Coaching is a distinct set of strategies to help clinicians assess ambivalence in their patients and direct the conversation toward increasing interest in better selfcare. Clinicians can assess readiness to change, and motivation to comply with care instructions with the goal of becoming more proactive in developing a realistic, patient centered care plan with patients. 1. Participants will be able to informally assess, using simple screening tool, patients motivation to change health behaviors 2. Participants will identify patient statements that suggest an interest in changing behavior and develop an appropriate treatment plan 3. Participants will report an increased level of skill with behavior change statements using guided practice role play 3 P age

Updates from the literature will be presented as well as practical pointers about pain and odor management for ulcers, how to work with limited resources for prevention, cost effective care options, and the critical role of and relationship with family/caregivers. 1. Identify 3 issues unique to end of life pressure ulcer risk and prevention 2. Define 3 guiding principles to end of life pressure ulcer prevention and care 3. Describe 3 cost effective management strategies for end of life pressure ulcer care To Feed or Not to Feed? Nutrition & Pressure Sores at Life's End Sue Linja RD, LD, Co- Founder, Officer, and President of S&S Nutrition Network, Inc.; Co-Founder, Officer, and Vice President of LTC Nutrition Counseling, LLC., Boise, Idaho 2:00pm-2:45pm (0.75) Although the impact of under nutrition and poor hydration on skin condition in the frail elderly is well documented, very little research exists to identify strategies to improve nutritional status and prevent pressure ulcer development at the end of life. This session will discuss the role nutrition plays in skin health, quality of life, weight status and more, while also focusing on nutrition and hydration goal-setting consistent with the patient's wishes during end of life care. 1. Participants will be able to verbalize key nutrition components impacting pressure ulcer prevention and treatment at the end of life 2. Program learners will understand the various options for nutrition support for their clients with wounds or at risk for pressure ulcer development at life s end 3. Attendees will participate in role playing and nutrition care planning activities to understand the importance of nutrition in quality of life for the end of life patient/resident 4 P age

The basics in prevention will be the foundation, followed by common mistakes in pressure ulcer management, and lastly, an overview of standard treatments and interventions. 1. Discuss basic preventative & management strategies focused on the Braden Risk Tool: Moisture Management, Nutrition, Mobility, Friction/Shear 2. Review the roles of the interdisciplinary team for best outcomes 3. Discuss 3 common errors in pressure ulcer management 4.
