Nutrition Services by Registered Dietitians in the PCMH RD Services Improve Health Outcomes and Save Money RD services improve diverse health indicators, including weight, HbA1c, quality of life, use of medications, productivity and total health care costs. Examples from evidence based studies of Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) include: For patients with CVD, MNT reduces hospital utilization (8.6%) and physician visits (16.9%). For patients with diabetes, MNT reduces hospital utilization (9.5%) and physician visits. (23.5%). Adults receiving MNT for overweight/obesity by an RD achieve a clinically significant weight loss. If BMIs were lowered by 5%, Idaho could save more than $1 billion in 10 years or $3 billion by the year For every dollar spent on an RD-led lifestyle modification program, studies project a return of $ Nutrition Services in The Affordable Care Act (ACA) Nutrition services are included 11 times in the ACA. In 2013, the Idaho legislature passed a joint resolution encouraging the inclusion of nutrition services as an integral component in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. This resolution stated that by providing MNT and professional nutrition counseling by Idaho registered dietitians in conjunction with existing services covered by insurance carriers, there will be a significant impact on chronic disease management, along with significant health care cost savings in the State of Idaho. According to the Institute of Medicine The registered dietitian is currently the single identifiable group of health-care professionals with standardized education, clinical training, continuing education and national credentialing requirements necessary to be directly reimbursed as a provider of nutrition therapy. RD-led intervention reduced risk of lost work days by 64.3% and risk of disability days by 87.2%. References for studies available on request.
