With the AAS degree, students would need 10 additional courses, all online to complete the BSN. The BSN is online to facilitate completion by working RNs. Grant funding supported the students and their families as they progressed through this demanding curriculum, condensed teaching and clinical placement with time allotted for students to work, and the creation and teaching of the online component. Public Health Service Grant 1R01CA61673: National Cancer Institute "Quality of Life: Special Populations". Served as Project Director for the Hispanic population in Northern VA. Grant focused on assessing the impact of cancer on the quality of life for Hispanics and African Americans. I was responsible for identifying 200 Hispanic individuals with a medical illness (as a pilot) and 200 Hispanic and African American individuals with cancer for the final study. I participated in the process for the translation of the questionnaire from English to Spanish, and the examination of the questionnaire for cultural sensitivity with the African American and Hispanic community board. 3 American Nurses Association Health Policy Institute: On a contract basis, wrote a grant funded for $500,000 from the Agency for Health Care Policy Research (AHCPR) for the Ethnic / Minority Fellowship Program of the American Nurses Association (ANA) to establish the ANA Health Policy Institute. As a consultant on the grant for two years, participated in the selection of 10 doctorally prepared ethnic minority nurses to attend a summer health policy program, and write and submit grants for funding to examine health policy and health services issues in the minority community HIV/AIDS and Adolescents: Conducted five focus groups with adolescents, and one with parents in Lynchburg, Virginia. This research effort sought to provide direction for the development of an abstinence AIDS curriculum for adolescents in Virginia. Adolescents health education needs, beliefs and attitudes, refusal skills and future planning related to HIV/AIDS were examined. Formal research proposal was developed, consent forms for participants and parents, and human subjects approval was obtained from the GMU. The focus group tapes were turned over to the funding agency. November Focus Groups for Hispanic Cancer Survivors: In another research effort in San Antonio, Texas I coordinated a series of focus groups of Hispanic cancer survivors. Qualitative evaluation of the focus groups completed by College of Nursing and Health Science faculty. The results were forwarded to the American Cancer Society to aid in the development of programs for the Hispanic population. $20, Asthma Education: Redmond, G.M., Langley, C. and Douglas, C. Asthma education and interventions for elementary school children. Funded by Northern Virginia AHEC, $500, National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety and Health (NIOSH): Grant based at The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health to examine biomarkers for psychological job stress. Collected psychometric data on stress perception from nurses in a large medical center, hospital data on severity of illness and nursing workload, and blood and saliva samples from a selective group of forty nurses. Biomarkers, including blood cortisol levels and salivary IgA, were measured and compared to participant s perception of job stress and the proximity of stress level to the holiday season. The 1992 publication represents the analysis of the biomarkers. Dissertation Committee Membership: 1. 4 Doctoral Dissertation: Investigated the impact of the work environment, social support and cognitive appraisal on nurses perception of occupational stress. Data collection occurred at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Data included a questionnaire distributed to 1,100 nurses with in-patient responsibilities and computer data on case load and severity of illness maintained by the hospital. The goal was to pair objective and subjective stress measures. Statistical analysis included factor analysis and multiple regression with mediating and moderating effects. INTERDISCIPLINARY PROFESSIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS White House Fellow: Served as Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Responsibilities included following up on inquiries to the Secretary that involved the resolution of issues, attending the Secretary's briefings and editing speeches. During the final meeting of the committee, we reviewed the psychometric results from the final bank of questions, international and minority implications, discussed handwriting vs. computer use, and feedback from admission offices across the country. The exam is now available in the U.S. and internationally, and continues to be revised. Healthy People 2000 African American Workgroup: Member of the workgroup reviewing the Healthy People 2000 goals for African Americans. Reviewed objectives where progress had been made and where gaps still remained between the African American and White populations. The selected objectives were released to the media and provided the basis for policy decisions regarding access to and utilization of health care by the African American community. The Surgeon General used the selected objectives in a nationally televised meeting on the progress towards meeting the year 2000 objectives for African Americans. Also provided input for the drafting of Healthy People 2010 goals for: 1). Access To Quality Health Care (the new priority area for Healthy People 2010) 2). Educational and Community-Based Programs 3). Environmental Health Focus Area White Paper on Quality of Life (QOL): As a contract, wrote a White Paper for the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society (ACS).
