2 About the service Avondale care home trades as Amore Care and is part of the Priory Group of companies. The home is situated in a residential area of Motherwell with local amenities and transport close by. The service is registered to accommodate up to 55 older people, 20 of whom may have dementia. At the time of the inspection 54 people lived in the service. The home was purpose-built, with accommodation on one level. There is a 20 bedded dementia unit which has its own lounge and dinning space. All bedrooms are single en-suite and people have access to secure garden and courtyard space. The aims and objectives as stated by the service are: "We aim to enhance quality of life by enabling people in our care to make informed choices about their daily life. We actively engage with residents and relatives, encouraging regular feedback and ensuring that people in our care are as independent as possible". What people told us Views of service users: Twelve people using the service completed care standards questionnaires and we spoke ten people during the inspection. All spoke very highly of the staff and the support they received. They described the home as a comfortable and happy place. People spoke positively about the activities on offer including coffee mornings, quizzes, sitting in the garden and playing Bingo. One person complimented the hair dresser who they visit weekly. One person advised that they go out to the local shops with staff support. People told us they could go to bed and get up when they wanted and the majority were complimentary regarding the food. The following comments were made by people living in the service: - I think the staff are very good - I like staying here - The workers take time when I need help and listen when I talk to them - I am encouraged to give my opinions - I enjoy helping staff to tidy up - I like the girls in here. they are a good laugh and we always have long chats. View of relatives/friends Eleven relatives completed care standards questionnaires and we spoke with two relatives during the inspection. All were very complimentary regarding the service. This included care and support their relatives received as well as compliments regarding the staff, management and environment. The majority also commented on how welcome they were made to feel when they visited the home. page 2 of 8

3 One relative commented on the significant improvement in their relatives health and well-being since they were admitted to the home. Their relative had settled very quickly and the home provided them with a very good level of stimulation and interest. Other comments included: - The management and staff genuinely care for each resident and treat them with respect, patience and kindness. - I have always found the staff to be helpful, attentive and approachable. - My relative is always treated as an individual and encouraged to say what she thinks and what she wants. Her needs are always catered for. Self assessment A self-assessment was not requested as part of this inspection. From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 5 - Very Good not assessed not assessed 5 - Very Good What the service does well Those living in the service and their relatives all commented very highly on the level of care and support provided by all staff in the service. From our observation we saw warm relationships between staff and those living in the home and their visitors. We observed that where assistance was needed the pace for this was set by the individual. This was confirmed though discussions with residents and their relatives. The home was good at involving people by asking their opinions and suggestions on how to develop the service further. People told us they were kept well-informed about what was happening in the service and were confident that actions would be taken following suggestions made. The service ensured that it met peoples' health and wellbeing needs. This was evident in personal care plans, medication records and health audits, and was confirmed in our discussions with those living in the service, their families and observations. Overall the personal plans seen at this inspection contained very good information relating to how the person's care and support needs should be met, in a person-centred way and the detail in these were known by staff. Staff spoke very highly about the services management team. They were seen as being very approachable and supportive but also able to address any issues effectively with people and to bring people along with planned changes, to improve the outcomes for those living and working there. page 3 of 8

4 Staff advised that they were involved in discussions about what was happening or planned to happen with in the service and stated that they were always asked for their opinion's which, where possible, were acted upon. People felt valued and felt that they could input in to the future directions of the service. Management were supportive of staff development and of staff taking on additional roles and responsibilities. This was managed in a constructive way to ensure that each new role was well embedded and reviewed prior to any additional responsibilities being added. A range of audits were carried out by management to assess how the service performed over a range of areas including monitoring how peoples specific health needs were being met as well as medication, environment and staff files. We found that where issues were raised in these audits or through spot checks, action was taken to address them. We could see that management continually reviewed all documentation and audits to ensure that they remained effective. What the service could do better No areas for improvement were identified at this inspection. Avondale Care Home continues to strife to ensure improved outcomes for people living in the service, their relatives and staff. The service continues to clearly identify areas that they wish to improve on and continue to deliver on this.
