2 About the service The service has been registered since The current manager was appointed in June Alma McFadyen House is situated in a quiet area in the centre of Dalbeattie and is registered as a care home for up to 24 residents. The service offers a 24 hour residential service and has respite accommodation. The service aims to enable residents to maintain their own level of independence and contact with family and community groups. The home comprises the former Alma House which adjoins McFadyen House, a large single storey purpose built extension. A passenger lift is provided to the first floor level in Alma House. What people told us We spoke to residents and relatives, individuals also made comments in care standard questionnaires. Comments made included. "The people who work here are fine." "The staff are very good, I get on well with them all." "Every one is very nice find them all very friendly" "Always a choice of food if you don't like something they will find you something else." "It's a comfortable here." "My relative is happy and well cared for in Alma, the carers are hard working and professional." "My relative has bonded with the carers." "Staff very good and caring." 3 What the service does well People who used the care service told us they were satisfied with care they received. Relatives told us they were confident in the care provided. People described good working relationships between staff and residents and a relaxed pleasant atmosphere. This was consistent with what we saw during the inspection. Staff were good at offering choices and giving people time to express their preferences. The care home were introducing a new electronic system for recording care. We found improvements in the quality of recording. This new system had further improved the quality of personal plans making them more structured with information being more easily accessible. The new system ensured that all planned care was provided. If an aspect of care was missed the manager and senior staff were alerted. The new recording system had also improved the provision of activities in the care home with improved planning and monitoring systems for activities. The electronic system allowed staff to record information quickly and the time saved was being used to provide activities. We saw this happening during visits to the care home. Personal plans were well maintained and were being updated on the new electronic recording system and we saw an improved level of detail. We saw examples of person centred planning. Medication storage and administration sampled was correct with accurate records being maintained. It was evident that staff were working to ensure safe medication practice. Reviews were being maintained and we found evidence that relatives were being routinely involved in reviews. Dependency assessments linked to staffing levels in the care home were also being maintained and regularly updated. Additional staffing had been provided to enhance the care provided overnight. Staff were well supported and communication and morale were described in positive terms. Files sampled evidenced safe recruitment practice was being followed to safeguard residents. Maintenance records sampled were up to date. What the service could do better The main weakness of the service was the lack of communal space. The shape and size of the main lounge area restricts the number of people who can be accommodated comfortably at any one time. This is partially offset by the smaller lounge area which had been redecorated and was pleasantly maintained. The dining room has been redecorated and provides a pleasant area however it is small and could not comfortably accommodate all residents at a single sitting. The previous inspection report included a recommendation about the need to take into account this lack of communal space in any future planning for the development of the care home. (See recommendation 1 ) During the inspection feedback we discussed an improvement which could be made to the recording of "as and when required medication".
