2 About the service The Bungalow Day Care Centre is a support service operated by Dundonald Community Health Care Limited. The service is registered to provide a day service to a maximum of sixteen older people with physical/sensory needs and/or memory impairment/dementia per day. The service was previously registered with the Care Commission on 1 April 2002 and transferred its registration to the Care Inspectorate when it was formed in April The service is located in the grounds of Dundonald House which is a Care Home operated by Dundonald House Nursing Home Ltd, situated on the outskirts of Dundonald. Dundonald is a village between Troon and Kilmarnock in South Ayrshire. The Bungalow Day Care Centre offers a service from Monday to Thursday and provides transport. At the time of the inspection thirty three people were being supported by the service. The aim of the service is "to provide a service tailored to meet requirements regardless of the level of care and support required. To enhance the quality of life for those individuals who have become physically and/or mentally impaired and who require additional support to remain in their own home through the provision of a holistic person centred day care service". What people told us We received ten completed care standards questionnaires. During the inspection we spoke with people attending the day service and also spoke with four relatives individually. People told us they were very happy with the service they received. People supported and their relatives spoke highly about the staff that supported them. Comments from care standards questionnaires and from those we spoke with included: - "Mum loves the staff and always talks about them in a positive way". - "The day care is a happy place where mum thoroughly enjoys going, she always comes home telling me about the food and activities she took part in". - "Service allows me to get out and about otherwise I would be house bound". - "I am well taken care of by the staff who are very friendly". - "This service increases my confidence and helps me to mix in company". - "My support plan helps give information about my likes and dislikes. Meetings, reviews and questionnaires are held regularly". - "Staff are always so very busy dealing with everyone individually, I feel they should have more staff". - "This service is a life saver for me, staff always very helpful". - "I feel the staff are under pressure at times, although they do their job well I feel an extra member of staff would benefit". - "I feel safe knowing the staff are taking good care of me". - "No problems with the service, they communicate with me and treat my mother very well. Staff are all friendly and very nice". Self assessment The Care Inspectorate received a fully completed self-assessment from the provider. The provider identified what it thought the service did well and gave examples of improvements made since the last inspection. The selfassessment identified some areas that the provider believed can be improved and showed how the service page 2 of 6

3 intended to do this. There was limited indication of the provider involving people using the service in undertaking the self-assessment. From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 5 - Very Good not assessed 5 - Very Good not assessed What the service does well The Bungalow Day Care Centre provided very good care and support. Service agreements were now in place which set out the terms under which the service provided support to people. Support plans, risk assessments and reviews contained a very good level of information which enabled staff to support people in a safe and consistent manner. We found strong evidence during our inspection that the service ensured people supported and their relatives were fully involved in all decisions about their support. The service held service user and carer meetings, review meetings and offered questionnaires. These encouraged people receiving support and their relatives to raise their views and suggestions to further develop the service provided. People using the service had choice, conversations with people confirmed that they were able to choose how they spent their day. This included what activities they chose to take part in and what they had for lunch. Staff demonstrated a very good awareness of individual's likes and dislikes. People were assured that support was provided by a regular staff team who felt supported within their role, attended training and were kept up to date with latest good practice. Throughout the inspection we observed very good practice where staff respectfully and kindly responded to people's needs and requests in a person centred way. What the service could do better We found staff knew the people they supported well; they were aware of issues of risk and had plans to manage these. However, more detailed individual information and guidance is required within support plans and risk assessments in relation to supporting people with specific conditions for example diabetes. We looked at the services accident and incident log and the Care Inspectorate notification history. We found that not all information had been passed to the Care Inspectorate as required. We referred the provider to the Care Inspectorate Guidance on Notification Reporting. The service had a variety of information, policies and procedure. The provider should ensure that all information, policies and procedure are up to date and relevant to the day service. These should be routinely reviewed to ensure they include current legislation and best practice. The provider should ensure they have good quality assurance systems and processes in place to review and audit page 3 of 6

4 all aspects of the service. Where areas are identified as needing improvement appropriate action plans should be put in place. Paying particular attention to those areas identified at the inspection.
