2 According to the learning outcomes for OSH Technical Junior Level 4, upon completion of all training courses, an OSH Professional will have the following: Knowledge Identify hazards with the potential to cause harm and/or loss Describe the risks associated with common occupational hazards Outline suitable techniques for assessing occupational risks Describe suitable methods to control risks State local requirements for legal compliance Identify where to find expert advice, guidance and information Skills Select appropriate methods for identifying hazards and evaluating risk Consider and prioritise where further risk controls are required Assist in the implementation of inspections and monitoring systems

3 According to the learning outcomes for OSH Technical Junior Level 4, upon completion of all training courses, an OSH Professional will have the following: Competences Prioritise those areas in workplaces where there is the most potential to cause harm Record significant findings Select suitable methods of keeping records relating to OHS Select sources of expert advice, guidance and information Recognise one s own level of competence The course example of OSH EQF Level 4 Technical Junior that covers the above and is chosen to be presented is the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational.

4 General Information The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is a globally recognized qualification offered by an established independent UK examination board (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) with over 30 years' experience in providing health and safety awards in the UK and across the world. The NEBSOH International General Certificate qualification meets the academic requirements for Technician Membership (Tech IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (UK IOSH) and Associate membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

5 General Information The course leads to the NEBOSH International General Certificate which is offered by over 500 course providers in over 100 countries globally. The Certificate offers a globally recognized document for the owner`s qualifications and it is designed to meet the health, safety, environmental and risk management needs of all places of work in both the private and public sectors. The total number of teaching and study time (127 hours) adds to the qualifications of an OSH Professional and are accepted and recognized by Governmental and other authorities in a number of European Countries.

6 Main Objectives of the Course To provide an excellent foundation in occupational safety and health, helping those who study it manage risk more effectively. To cover the main principles relating to health and safety, identification and control of workplace hazards and the practical application of this knowledge. The IGC syllabus takes a risk management approach based on best practice and international standards and management systems which includes the International Labour Organisation (ILO) codes of practice. Local laws and regulations as well as cultural factors may be part of the study programme.

7 Target Audience The NEBOSH IGC is suitable for Managers, Supervisors and Employees who require a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety principles and practices. Moreover, it enables candidates to effectively discharge workplace health and safety responsibilities in any employment sector. NEBOSH IGC is also suitable for those looking on a career in health and safety, providing a sound basis for progression on a higher level that is the NEBOSH International Diploma. For the course no previous health and safety knowledge is actually required. However, any experience in the OSH field helps the candidate to understand the terminology used as well as practical example and case studies discussed.

8 Learning Outcomes IGC1 Understand the purpose of a health & safety policy Understand and be able to carry out risk assessments in low risk environments Be able to inspect workplaces, monitor health and safety performance and report effectively on these Explain the purpose of regular reviews of health and safety performance, how to undertake such reviews, and the criteria that influences the frequency of reviews Explain the purpose of and procedures for investigating accidents and other events at work Utilise records of accident and ill health experience in an organisation Explain the local requirements for notifying events to external agencies

9 Learning Outcomes IGC2 Recognition of the range of hazards presented by commonplace work activities Understand the interactions between vehicles and pedestrians within workplaces Carry out a manual handling assessment and suggest ways of minimising these risks Outline the general principles for the selection, use and maintenance of work equipment. Identify the hazards from the use of electricity Identify basic fire hazards in the workplace and advise on basic fire prevention Recognise chemical and biological hazards in the workplace. Explain the term 'ergonomics' and the contribution that ergonomic design can make to health, safety and efficiency at work; identify work processes and practices that may give rise to musculoskeletal health problems. Identify the main hazards of construction and demolition work.

10 Course Structure The NEBOSH IGC course follows a well documented syllabus divided into the following three units: IGC1 Management of international health and safety Minimum Tuition Time: 36 Hours / Recommended Study time: 23 Hours Elements 1.Foundations in 2. 11 Course Structure IGC2 Control of international workplace hazards Minimum Tuition Time: 42 Hours / Recommended Study time: 26 Hours Elements 1.Workplace Hazards and Risk Control 2.Transport Hazards and Risk Control 3.Musculoskeletal Hazards and Risk Control 4.Work Equipment Hazards and Risk Control 5.Electrical Safety 6.Fire Safety 7.Chemical and Biological Hazards and Risk Control 8.Physical and Psychological Hazards and Risk Control

12 Course Structure IGC3 International health and safety practical application Practical Session: 2 Hours Minimum Tuition Time: 2 Hours Recommended Study time: 4 Hours Candidates have to demonstrate their ability to apply the knowledge of IGC1 and IGC2 syllabus by successful completion of a inspection of a workplace and prepare a report to the management with recommendations.

13 Examination / Assessment Candidates attending the course are provided with the necessary knowledge and competence to take successfully written examination, leading to the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health. Units IGC1 and IGC2 are assessed upon completion by a two hour written examination each. Each paper consists of ten short answer questions and one long answer question. All questions are compulsory and scripts are marked by external examiners which are appointed by NEBOSH. Unit IGC3 is assessed by one two hour practical examination carried out in a designated workplace and following a written report. The IGC3 assessment must be taken within 14 days of a written examination (IGC1 and IGC2). The practical examination is internally assessed by the local course provider and externally moderated by NEBOSH.

Examiners Reports (which include the relevant question paper) They do not contain model answers, but provide guidance as to what the examiners look for when marking scripts. Lecturing with the use of powerpoint presentations, audiovisual techniques, examples and analysis of case studies and exercises, group discussion, supplementary notes.
