4 San Francisco General Hospital Foundation Why It Matters The mission of the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation is to promote excellence in research, education and care for all at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (The General). The Foundation plays a critical fundraising role, providing resources for high-impact initiatives that contribute to the excellence of the hospital, many which have potential to develop sustainable funding. The Foundation has raised over $60 million since its founding in 1994 to support hospital initiatives that directly improve the care and experience of patients at The General. The General is a City hospital, although less than 20% of its budget comes from the City s General Fund. The Foundation does not receive any funding from the UCSF Foundation. The long-standing partnership between The General and UCSF is focused on providing excellent clinical care to vulnerable populations in San Francisco. UCSF also operates its own hospital, the UCSF Medical Center. The care provided by The General and UCSF Medical Center is complementary. Each fulfills a unique role within the community, serving different patient populations and bringing different core competencies. Initiatives San Francisco General Hospital Foundation has supported include: RESEARCH The Orthopedic Trauma Institute has grown into a world-renowned center for innovative research, training and care in orthopedic trauma with seed money from the Foundation. The Center for Vulnerable Populations receives ongoing funding from the Foundation that allows it to conduct research to determine the best methods to prevent and treat chronic illnesses that affect those at highest risk. Psychiatric Emergency Services receives support for programs that help victims of violent trauma and their families break the cycle of violence. EDUCATION The Foundation receives support for fellowships for physicians including opportunities to enhance their training in working with underserved populations. The Foundation seeks support for the continuing education of nurses through the Dorothy Washington Scholarship Fund. CARE FOR ALL The Acute Care for the Elderly Program at The General was made possible in part with support from the Foundation. This program seeks to reduce readmission of elderly patients, which represents 40% of all inpatients at The General. Through the Foundation s efforts, The General is home to The Avon Comprehensive Breast Center, providing breast cancer early detection and support services to women from underserved populations. The Foundation provides funding for basic care items, materials to renovate spaces and for equipment to improve the care of all patients.
