Project9_2nd run :Layout 1 27/11/ :50 Page 1 Our innovative academy for newly-qualified nurses Effective leaders Valued and engaged staff Enhanced care Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, substance misuse and learning disability services across Norfolk and Suffolk. Our nursing academy provides newly-qualifying staff with the opportunity to progress through the first stage of their professional life with enhanced support, setting them up for a successful life-long career.
Project9_2nd run :Layout 1 27/11/ :50 Page 2 Great for care organisations that are well led, safe and effective Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation NHS Trust (NSFT) wants to enhance its regional and national profile as a preferred employer. This is important to attract all staff groups, roles and professions, and for newly-qualified nurses, the academy will provide an incentive for them to start their careers with a safe and effective organisation. NSFT has a robust talent management and leadership Jane Sayer. Director of Nursing, framework that works closely NSFT with the NHS Leadership Academy. Newly-qualified nurses will be supported in the very early stages of their careers to access the NHS Leadership Academy. It is expected that within six months, all members of our NSFT Nursing Academy will have commenced the Edward Jenner Programme. 2 nursing academy NSFT Designed for newly-qualified clinicians, this programme leads to an NHS Leadership Academy award in Leadership Foundations. By investing early on, we aim to support new graduates to become our change agents and leaders of the future. Focusing on leadership skills at this early stage encourages people s confidence in their own style, empowers them to speak out and promote themselves and our services, and allows them to professionally challenge current practice with innovation.
Project9_2nd run :Layout 1 27/11/ :50 Page 3 Great for responsiveness to Service Users and Carers needs Our Trust is investing in its newly-qualified nurses some of its front-line staff to ensure our service users receive innovative care from people empowered to deliver their best. Service users and carers are the experts by experience, and with a Trust that covers such a wide geographical area and provides such a wide range of services, we need front line staff who are able to respond in an individualised way. The academy will support newly-qualified staff to consolidate skills and knowledge gained from their pre-registration training and help them to translate these in a flexible way, at a time when they are likely looking for their own philosophy and practice beliefs. 3 nursing academy NSFT Going forward, the Academy will work closely with the Recovery College and the Trust User Groups to ensure that they are fully involved in all future initiatives and programmes, giving service users and carers a chance to be part of the development of our future NSFT nursing staff.
Project9_2nd run :Layout 1 27/11/ :50 Page 4 Great for the graduate Your first nursing post after leaving the university can be a daunting experience. We want to build a virtual community where success, ideas, skills, values and beliefs can be shared and where worries can be alleviated, so that our new graduates can grow into independent client centred professionals. 4 nursing academy NSFT Research shows that formalised programmes have a positive impact on clinical skills development and allow a successful transition from student to registered practitioner. We also want to offer targeted opportunities for all that support existing frameworks of preceptorship, but also enhanced pathways for those showing potential to be the NHS leaders of the future.
Project9_2nd run :Layout 1 27/11/ :50 Page 5 Great for professional development NSFT aims to recruit the highest level of newly-qualified staff, on a local and national basis. The Nursing Academy is the first of its kind in the UK and will provide an opportunity for newly registered nurses to continue their learning and development in the first year, post qualifying, in a supported learning environment. The aim is to provide a natural stepping stone in a graduate's continued professional development, and supports our Trust's talent management framework to develop staff to their full potential. 5 nursing academy NSFT Retaining staff, as they grow their skills and experience within the organisation, is also a key expectation of our Trust. Valuing and engaging staff and supporting their ongoing development is key in this process. The Nursing Academy will support a graduate's preceptorship programme and shape their first appraisal and further development during their first year of professional development.
Project9_2nd run :Layout 1 27/11/ :50 Page 6 Great for NSFT employees Working alongside excited new staff, with fresh thoughts and ideas, who are encouraged to become change agents, can motivate existing staff in a supportive way. We hope that by investing in our nursing graduates we will have a more far reaching effect. One of the Academy s aims is to engage the newly-qualified nurses engaged staff think and act in a positive way about the work they do, the people they work with and the organisation that they work in. This positivity has the potential to be infectious. The Academy also gives an opportunity for our existing staff to become involved in the development of the new graduates and to support them in their first year of employment. Graduates and staff have the potential to have a richer experience through increased networking and access to skills, experience and knowledge. 6 nursing academy NSFT
Project9_2nd run :Layout 1 27/11/ :50 Page 7 The Nursing Academy will provide newly-qualifying staff with the opportunity to progress through the first stage of their professional life with enhanced support, setting them up for a successful life-long career Jane Sayer (Director of Nursing, Quality and Patient Safety) The Nursing Academy is a new and exciting development that demonstrates our Trust s commitment to you, on both a personal and professional level as newly-qualified practitioners. We support you to become the practitioner you aspire to be. Michele Allott (Deputy Director of Nursing and Patient Safety) I think it is a fantastic idea Gemma Oxbury (Newly Qualified Nurse) The Nursing Academy offers a fantastic, supportive, developmental opportunity for NSFT's newly registered nurses. This important and innovative Trust initiative values both the potential and the important contribution of these nurses, as they progress in their new roles at an exciting time in their careers. Jane Blowers (School Director of Engagement & Pre-registration Programmes Course Director Pre-registration mental health/ Professional lead mental health), UEA Just to reiterate I think the academy initiative is a really good idea and will really provide a really positive introduction to the profession and in the consolidation of skills. Paul Driscoll-Evans, Director of Workforce Development, Faculty of Health and Science, University Campus Suffolk The Nursing Academy year includes: All classroom statutory and mandatory training done as a group Master classes and action learning sets A webpage (internal) and chatroom Access to leadership courses Specialised training DICES Risk Assessment and Health Records on Trial 7 nursing academy NSFT
