1 Clinical Nurse Specialist Alumni and Student Newsletter April 2016 Indiana University School of Nursing Farewell and Thanks! Pat Ebright PhD, RN, CNS, FAAN, Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Graduate Programs will be retiring from the IUSON May 31 st, 2016 after 16 years with the school. She completed her undergraduate and graduate masters education at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing and Health, and her PhD at Indiana University. Her healthcare experience includes 46 years as a registered nurse, with the first 28 years working as staff nurse, nurse manager, and clinical nurse specialist in acute care hospital settings. For the past 18 years she has taught in undergraduate and graduate nursing education programs. Pat s research focused on healthcare provider decision making in the context of actual care situations, and toward increasing understanding of the influence of work complexity on patient safety, quality of care, and the implications for system design and nursing education. She was a member of the first Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship class sponsored by the National Patient Safety Foundation, and completed a one-year informatics fellowship with the VA in Indianapolis. She continues to participate in research with the VA on transfers of care, and with Simon Cancer Center for patient and caregiver decision making regarding treatment options using cognitive task analysis interview techniques for data collection and analysis. Pat is looking forward to spending time in Indianapolis with her daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons, as well as in Glen Arbor Michigan playing more tennis, reading more novels, hiking, biking, and hearing about the much anticipated and wonderful accomplishments of nursing colleagues and graduates of the IUSON. 5 For more information about CNS program enrollment, contact Lisa Thompson Financial Resources for Graduate Students Students pursuing a graduate degree from the Indiana University School of Nursing can take advantage of a number of resources to help fund their education. Scholarships are available for graduate nursing students. The IUPUI Office of Student Scholarships offers an online resource for scholarship information and applications. Students can access details about campus-based scholarship awards as well as helpful tips on searching for external scholarships available through other agencies and organizations. Visit the IUPUI Office of Student Scholarships. The Indiana University School of Nursing also awards over $700,000 in scholarships each year to current undergraduate and graduate students. Review detailed information about available awards. In addition to institutional and private scholarships, students can also explore scholarships from national nursing organizations. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing and Johnson & Johnson are excellent resources for information about national nursing scholarships. Federal student loans, including the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan and Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan programs, are also available for graduate students. These loans offer affordable interest rates and flexible repayment plans to assist students in covering their tuition, fees, book costs, and other educational expenses. For students interested in teaching, the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) provides loan funds to help registered nurses complete a graduate education to become qualified nurse faculty. Participating IU School of Nursing students who agree to complete a core component of education-related courses in a qualifying program can receive NFLP funds to help cover the costs of their tuition, fees, and books. Following graduation, students who secure employment as full-time nursing faculty at an accredited school of nursing are eligible to receive a low interest rate, deferred repayment, and partial loan cancellation. Students maintaining full-time faculty employment for 4 years after graduation can have 85 percent of their loan forgiven. Many graduate students also utilize alternative financial aid resources to help fund their graduate education. Veterans and members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their dependents may be eligible to receive financial assistance for their education. Visit IUPUI Office for Veterans and Military Personnel for additional information. Many of our students also take advantage of tuition assistance or reimbursement through their employer. For answers to your questions and information about available financial resources for Indiana University School of Nursing graduate students, please contact Nathan Lohr, Assistant Director of Student Financial Services, at American Assembly for Men in Nursing AAMN is the only professional organization for nurses that has improved gender inclusion in nursing profession by offering an environment of belongingness and collective learning for its members to excel in the profession.
