6 CONFERENCE SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Professor Conor O Keane Chair, NOCA Governance Board Conor O Keane is the Chair of the NOCA Governance Board. He is a Consultant Histopathologist in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and Associate Clinical Professor of Pathology at University College Dublin. He is a 1981 graduate of University College Dublin Medical School. He obtained his pathology training at the Mallory Institute of Pathology/Boston University School of Medicine and subsequently was appointed there on staff from He was Clinical Director of the Mater Hospital from 2009 to His major interest is Quality Improvement in Medicine, particularly using Lean methodologies and is an inaugural graduate of the Diploma in Leadership and Quality in Healthcare from RCPI. He is currently the Mater Clinical Director for Quality and Patient Safety and member of the hospital s Executive Management Committee. He also serves as a Director of Bone Bank at Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pathology and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Pathology, RCPI and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCPI). Mr Kenneth Mealy Vice President, RCSI & Clinical Lead, NOCA Mr Kenneth Mealy is Clinical Lead for NOCA. He is a General Surgeon with a special interest in gastrointestinal (GI) surgery and is based at Wexford General Hospital. Mr Mealy has an active interest in surgical training and held the post of Chairman of the Dublin Region Basic Surgical Training Committee from 2001 until 2006 and has been Chairman of the National Basic Surgical Training Committee since then. He also held the position of President of the Surgical Section of The Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland (RAMI) in Dr Philip Crowley National Director, HSE Quality Improvement Division Dr. Philip Crowley, National Director of Quality Improvement is a doctor who trained as a GP and worked for five years in Nicaragua. He worked in the NHS to tackle health inequalities. He also trained in public health medicine and has worked with the IPH, and the ICGP on refugee and asylum seeker health. Philip worked for 6 years as Deputy Chief Medical Officer with the DoH, he continues to work as a GP Dr Sarah Hare National Clinical Lead, National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) Dr. Sarah Hare is a Consultant Anaesthetist and National Clinical Lead for the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit at the RCOA. The National Emergency Laparotomy Audit has been collecting data on over patients annually since Data is fed back to hospitals in the form of annual reports, and also as realtime quality improvement dashboard that provide instant comparison of local vs national data. NELA is now entering it s 4 th year of data collection and aims to improve QI as well as providing robust, transparent QA. 7 CONFERENCE SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Dr Brian Creedon Clinical Lead, National Audit of Hospital Mortality (NAHM) Dr Brian Creedon is a Consultant Palliative Medicine Physician who works in University Hospital Waterford (UHW). Dr Creedon is the Chair of the NAHM Governance Committee. Brian is on the National Clinical Programme for Palliative Care Working Group and is the regional lead for HSE South. In May 2016, he was appointed a Senior Fellow in Palliative Medicine. Dr Creedon was appointed a senior lecturer with University College Cork (UCC) in 2014 and was instrumental in establishing UHW as a new UCC teaching hospital. He also holds a clinical senior lecturer role with the Royal College of Surgeons. Dr Brian McCullagh Consultant Respiratory & General Physician, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Graduated from Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (RCSI) 2002 M.B., B.Ch.,B.A.O. LRCP&SI (Hons). Received General Professional Training accreditation and Membership of Royal college of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI) Awarded Newman Fellowship in translational medicine research at University College Dublin in 2008 with completion of MD thesis in the field of Pulmonary Hypertension. Received Certificate of Completion of Higher Specialist Training (CSCST) in Respiratory and Internal Medicine 2012 before departing to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) to undertake a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship. Returned to Mater Misericordiae University Hospital 2015 as consultant respiratory and general physician with special interest in pulmonary hypertension and Ms Susan Mitchell Health Editor, Sunday Business Post Susan Mitchell is Health Editor at The Sunday Business Post. Susan regularly contributes to radio and television programmes on current affairs and the health service. Her work includes in-depth reports on the HSE, the pharmaceutical sector and the politics of health. Susan has won numerous awards for her work including Feature Writer of the Year for the national newspaper awards (NewsBrands Ireland) in Mr Peter Clarke Patient Advocate Following a career in industry spanning 30 years, which encompassed the spectrum from craftsman to marketing director, Peter Clarke returned to university and graduated with a Masters in Organisational Psychology. He became a consultant and director with Cadwell Consulting and Training Limited. Peter delivered significant strategic change projects to a variety of clients for 15 years in areas of HR, Marketing and Sales, Production and Administration. Peter also made a difference to managers at all levels from supervisor to CEO through an Executive Development Coaching Programme in both the government and NGO sectors. He set up his own consulting business in In 2006 Peter was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin s Lymphoma. Following intensive treatment, he received a stem cell transplant which delivered long-term remission. His sister was his matching donor. Peter returned to his consulting practice specialising in the NGO sector. In addition, he became a peer support volunteer with the Irish Cancer Society. In 2017, he became the Irish Cancer Society s patient representative on the Specialty National QI Programmes Steering Committee of the RCPI. Over the years, Peter has written poetry and is a member of Bealtaine Writers, who were part of the recent Acorn Project, initiated by President Michael D. 8 CONFERENCE SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Ms Collette Tully Executive Director, NOCA Collette Tully was appointed the NOCA Executive Director in June Prior to this, Collette was the Operations Manager for Medical Validation Ireland (RCSI), a consortium of the main Medical and Dental Training Bodies in Ireland, working on international projects. Collette worked for a number of years as a management consultant with Deloitte Ireland, where she was responsible for change programmes across multiple sectors including banking, health insurance and the public sector. Collette also has significant international experience working with the Department for Education England, BHP Billiton Australia and JP Morgan London. Collette is a qualified accountant with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountancy (CIMA) and Association of Project Management Ms Joanne Matthews Head of Improvement and Safety, Improvement Hub (ihub), Healthcare Improvement Scotland Joanne Matthews joined Healthcare Improvement Scotland in April 2013 as Head of Safety for the Scottish Patient Safety Programme following a career spanning a number of years in the South of England. A nurse by background, Joanne trained and worked in Scotland before moving to England carrying out a number of clinical roles across acute care and NHSDirect, with her final clinical role as lead nurse for Kent, Surrey and Sussex within NHSDirect. Following this, Joanne moved to the Primary Care Trust (PCT) in Brighton to lead service improvement across community and acute services before taking on a Strategic Commissioner and Joint Commissioner (Adult Social Care) role across acute and community care for adults and children. During this time, Joanne also participated within the Department of Health, Long Term Conditions Quality Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) leading the Sussex Programme. Before returning to Scotland, Joanne successfully led the clinical commissioning group s authorisation process for Brighton and Hove PCT and the close down of the PCT in line with the recent changes to the NHS in Dr Conor Deasy Clinical Lead, Major Trauma Audit (MTA) Conor is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine working at Cork University Hospital, Deputy Medical Director of the National Ambulance Service, Senior Lecturer in Emergency Medicine at University College Cork and Associate Adjunct Professor at the School of Primary Care, Monash University, Australia. He is Clinical Lead for National Office of Clinical Audit s (NOCA) Major Trauma Audit in Ireland, Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Irish Association of Emergency Medicine (IAEM), Chair of the National Ambulance Service Research Committee, a member of the Irish Committee for Emergency Medicine Training (ICEMT) and an examiner for the College of Emergency Medicine. Conor completed his higher specialist training program in Emergency Medicine in Ireland before moving to Australia where he worked as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Alfred Emergency and Trauma Centre, Melbourne. While there he completed a PhD at the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Monash University in collaboration with Ambulance Victoria. 08 IN ASSOCIATION WITH RCSI CHARTER WEEK

9 CONFERENCE SPEAKER Ms Eilísh Hardiman Group CEO, Children s Hospital Group Eilísh Hardiman is Group Chief Executive of the Children s Hospital Group, appointed in Nov This Hospital Group consists of Our Lady s Children s Hospital, Crumlin; Temple Street Children s University Hospital and the National Children s Hospital at Tallaght Hospital, in partnership with all academic institutions in Ireland providing paediatric healthcare education and research. The remits of the Children s Hospital Group Board is to oversee the integration the three existing children s hospitals into a new single legal entity well before transitioning to the new Paediatric Outpatients and Urgent Care Centres at Connolly and Tallaght Hospitals and the new children s hospital at St. James s Hospital, developing an effective corporate and clinical governance structures for the Hospital Group, developing a services integration/reconfiguration plan for paediatric services in the Greater Dublin Area and to act as client for the new children s hospital capital project, the largest capital investment in healthcare. The new children s hospital is also planned as the first Digital Hospital in Ireland. Eilísh has over 25 years acute academic teaching hospital experience, 15 of which at senior corporate management level, including CEO of Tallaght Hospital, both Deputy CEO and Director of Nursing of St James s Hospital, as well as, CEO to the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board. Dr Rory Dwyer Clinical Lead, National ICU Audit Dr Rory Dwyer is the Clinical Lead for the National ICU Audit. He is a Consultant in ICU and Anaesthesia in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin and Senior Lecturer in the RCSI Department of Anaesthesia. He is currently President of the Intensive Care Society of Ireland. He has previously been Chairman of the Training Committee of the College of Anaesthetists and the Clinical Lead for Transport of Critically Ill Adults. Dr Brian Marsh Clinical Director - Directorate of Critical Care, Anaesthesia, Elective Surgery & Theatres, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin. She completed her PhD at Trinity College in Acute Traumatic Brain Injury and has published widely in the areas of TBI, ACS and Syncope. She has been appointed as clinical lead in a new programme of clinical effectiveness at St James s Hospital and has co-led the implementation of an integrated care pathway for hip fracture care with Mr Tom McCarthy, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at St James s Hospital. 10 CONFERENCE SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Ms Dorothy Hosein Former CEO, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust Dorothy Hosein is currently the Managing Director of Mid Essex NHS Hospital. This is an interim role to support the hospital optimising its efficiency, performance, and clinical sustainability as it enters into a merger with two other Essex hospitals. Prior to this role she was the CEO of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kings Lynn. When she took up this role this was one of the most challenged hospitals in the UK. Through her ability as an inspirational, dynamic leader she provided the vision, methodology and frameworks to not only lead the organisation out of the low assurance designation Special Measures, but also to achieve all performance targets including financial commitments. She has extensive private sector experience holding senior board positions in many industries, including manufacturing, food, not for profit and management consultancy. She joined the NHS in 2008 as she wanted to use her sound business acumen and customer focused skills to improve patient experience and outcomes. She has added huge value over the last ten years to many other NHS Trusts including Barking Havering and Redbridge, The Royal Free, Barnet and Chase Farm, and North Middlesex holding a range of roles including strategy, operations and transformation. As a Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma she is always looking for the opportunity to teach others how to improve efficiency, take out waste and drive up value. She is described frequently by both staff and stakeholders as the person who not only gets it in terms of what needs doing, but also gets things done. Her engaging style, visible leadership and role modelling on high standards have been her tool kit for success in her executive management roles. Her mantra of every patient s experience matters has become part of daily business, and she is recognised as a change Prof Sean Tierney Dean of Professional Development and Practice, RCSI Professor Tierney trained as a Vascular Surgeon in Ireland, the UK and the United States. In 2000, he was appointed a Consultant Vascular Surgeon in Tallaght University Hospital, Dublin. In 2008, RCSI appointed him Professor of Surgical Informatics and in 2011 he became the first RCSI Dean of Professional Development and Practice. He is the clinical lead on the RCSI Professional Competence Scheme, chairs the Forum of Irish Training Bodies sub-committee on Professional Competence and is former chairman of NOCA. Mr James Cashman Joint Clinical Lead, Irish National Orthopaedic Register (INOR) Mr James Cashman is the Joint Clinical Lead for the Irish National Orthopaedic Register (INOR). He is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Mater Private, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital. He graduated from University College Cork in Having undertaken his postgraduate training in Trauma and Orthopaedics under the auspices of the Irish National Orthopaedic training programme, he completed a hip and knee reconstructive fellowship at the Rothman Institute, Philadelphia, USA. He then completed a fellowship in the Young Adult Hip at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, London. He has published numerous peer reviewed articles in basic science and clinical orthopaedics, as well as texts on hip and knee arthroplasty. His interests include primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. He also has a further subspecialty interest in the Young Adult Hip, performing hip arthroscopy, pelvic and femoral osteotomies. 10 IN ASSOCIATION WITH RCSI CHARTER WEEK

11 CONFERENCE SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Dr Peter McKenna Clinical Director, National Women and Infants Health Programme Dr Peter McKenna qualified from UCD in He worked as an Intern in St Vincent s Hospital and then in the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street where he worked in both Obstetrics and in the Neo-natal Unit. Following this, he went to England for five years where he worked in Birmingham and Sheffield in a number of hospitals, all delivering obstetric and gynaecological services. On returning to Ireland in the early 80 s, he worked as a lecturer in Trinity which involved clinical duties in the Adelaide Hospital and Rotunda. Following this he was a Senior Registrar and Assistant Master in the Rotunda and was appointed to Jervis Street Hospital and the Rotunda as a Consultant in Prior to the closure of Jervis Street, he moved to the Mater Hospital and has been a Consultant there and at the Rotunda since He was Master in the Rotunda from He was appointed to the Rotunda and Mater Hospitals until September 2017 and he has a wide range of interests in general obstetrics and gynaecology and in particular, maternal illness such as cardiac disease in pregnancy. In March 2017, he was appointed as National Clinical Director for the National Women and Infants Health Programme.
