The Word Edition rd May 2014 Having been on annual leave last week I was disappointed not to have been able to attend our first Nursing Recruitment Day which was held at the Haywood Hospital on Saturday 17 May. I was delighted to hear that there was a great turn out, positive reaction to the career opportunities on offer and enthusiastic feedback received from candidates about training and development opportunities open to our staff. Well done to everyone involved in organising the event and I am particularly pleased that we were able to conduct interviews and support applicants to apply for posts during the day itself. Community hospitals offer a huge range of opportunities for nurses and I am very pleased to hear that the appointment process is now underway and I very much look forward to welcoming our new recruits. (Read more about the Open Day on Page 3) Before going on leave I joined senior managers from across the Trust for a new leadership event to look more closely at how we can better support staff to clear blockages in our processes and systems that may be preventing positive service development. The event was also a helpful opportunity to offer the challenge to leadership teams to ensure that communication is the best it can be and that staff are supported and empowered to drive change and improvement from the frontline. Earlier this week I had the opportunity to spend time with a local family who have received support for many years from the Trust s Children s Airway Support Team to help them care for their daughter who has several complex conditions and disabilities. The family were full of praise for the skill and compassionate care they receive and it was very clear that an important and supportive relationship has developed with our staff which meant a very great deal to the family. I was personally very struck by how significant the continuity of long term care is in helping people to feel confident and reassured about the services they access. This family s story is an excellent illustration of the vital role community health and social care services have at the heart of people s daily lives. They have also kindly agreed we may share their experiences with our partners and the wider public to help us showcase the breath of services and support the Trust offers. Thank you for the positive feedback on our new feature in The Word Your Board Matters. It is important that staff are able to gain an understanding about the key decisions and business matters discussed by the Executive and Non Executive Directors and I hope this new feature will be useful to you. It is always very positive to see new starters, students and apprentices in attendance at our monthly Board meetings and I would like to remind everyone that you are all welcome to attend when convenient. This week the Trust Board has taken time out together to focus on the organisation s long term vision. In particular we looked at some of the key strategic challenges we face and improvements we want to make such as developing better partnerships in the future to enhance service development in the NHS. Stuart Stuart Poynor Chief Executive 1

Long serving health visitor Sukey Bek (pictured above), based at Balance Street Health Centre in Uttoxeter, recently retired after 47 years service in the NHS. Her colleagues say Sukey is a really well liked, well respected member of the team who is very hard working and has a great sense of humour. We will miss her and wish her a very happy retirement. The picture above was taken at Sukey s leaving do at Uttoxeter. She is shown in the picture with her health visiting colleagues, Sarah Harding community nursery nurse, Alison Beal health visitor, Sukey Bek health visitor, Sandra Butcher health visitor and Julie Ronson health visitor. Another very long serving member of Partnership Trust staff couldn t stay away and has come back out of retirement to work part-time. Staff on Broadfield Ward at the Haywood Hospital marked clinical support worker Sandra Calvert s 40th anniversary year in the NHS with a special celebration earlier this week. Sandra began her service at the North Staffs Royal Infirmary on Cicely Haughton Ward and spent twenty years in the intensive care department before transferring to the Haywood Rehabilitation Ward in 1995 where she has been based since. Ward manager Joanne Landers said, Sandra is a bubbly person with lots of energy and is a font of knowledge with her years of experience. She is hard working and enthusiastic even after 40 years! She loves her job hence retiring and returning. She is very committed to her work and she will be hugely missed when she does finally retire however we have no idea when that might be we may be doing another article for The Word when she celebrates her 80th birthday! 3 Sun Shines on Community Hospitals Recruitment Day On Saturday the hottest day of the year so far! nurses, service managers, matrons, admin and HR staff, training and professional leads colleagues welcomed nurses interested in career opportunities in community hospitals to the Partnership Trust s first Nursing Recruitment Open Day, held at the Haywood Hospital. Gemma Hall, HR Business Partner for Specialised Services who co-ordinated the event explained; Our aim for the day was to attract high calibre candidates to come and learn more about the varied career opportunities open to nurses in our community hospitals by showcasing our excellent services and facilities. We were very pleased with the turn out, especially on such a beautiful day, with well over fifty people coming through the doors. Prospective applicants and candidates were encouraged to come along to speak to our professionals, have a tour of the hospital, gather information about the Trust and we also helped many to apply for posts and be interviewed on the day. Thirty two candidates were interviewed from a range of backgrounds including a number of students. Feedback about the calibre of candidates was excellent and the appointment process has now begun. The advert for community hospital nursing posts has been reopened on for a short period (until Sunday 25 May) and can be viewed here - Work is now underway to review the day with the aim to hold further successful events and support recruitment campaigns for other services across the Trust. 3

Working Together to Improve Complex Discharge Process Integrated Local Care teams in East Staffordshire are working with colleagues at Burton Hospitals NHS Trust to review complex discharge processes. The Complex Discharge Project Team based at Queen s Hospital, Burton is pictured with Pete the Patient whose bed is covered with all the documents that need to be completed in order to get him discharged. The project will aim to redesign discharge pathways for patients with complex needs; minimise the length of stay where clinically appropriate and reduce the amount of time required to complete paperwork and increase time spent with the patient. Updates about the project will be provided in the monthly Transformation Bulletin. New MSK Service for Stafford & Surrounds and Cannock Patients in Stafford and Surrounds and Cannock Chase are to benefit from a new integrated Partnership Trust service offering high quality, effective and timely advice, assessment, diagnosis and treatment for musculoskeletal, pain management and rheumatology conditions. The contract award for the service is an exciting opportunity for our highly skilled clinicians to build on existing experience and to work together to deliver patient centred pathways that will make a positive difference for people with such conditions. The service will focus on optimising the quality of life for people, enabling them to self manage more independently with their care managed in the community. The newly designed service will be up and running by October, supported by a formal launch, and much work is now underway involving front line staff to develop clinical pathways. The Trust appreciates this is a significant and important transformational change, therefore the implementation of the new service will be project managed by Jacqui Williams. Jacqui has significant experience of managing large programmes of transformation and is really looking forward to the challenge and working in partnership with clinicians. For more information please contact Jacqui at Edric House in Rugeley or jacquline.williams@ssotp.nhs.uk 5

Arthritis UK Accolade for Haywood Nurse Congratulations to Nurse Consultant in Rheumatology Sarah Ryan, who was recently awarded the Arthritis Research UK Nursing Silver Medal Prize at the National British Society Rheumatology meeting in Liverpool on May 8th Sarah, who works in the Rheumatology Centre at the Haywood Hospital, received the award in recognition of her research project exploring what knowledge and skills people with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis would want nurses to have to care effectively for their health needs. Sarah says of the project My research involved conducting two focus groups with people who have rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis from across the United Kingdom. It was a wonderful opportunity to discover patients experiences of health service and to explore their aspirations as to the care they would want to receive from rheumatology nurses. The findings from this research will help to influence the content of educational programmes for rheumatology nurses. I was delighted to receive an award which raises the profile of nursing research Welcome Back to Oak Ward Well done to staff at Bradwell Hospital for their hard work in preparing for the reopening of Oak Ward to patients on Monday following essential infection control works and ward improvements. Matron Julie Cumberlidge photographed the team enjoying a well earned cuppa and says, "Staff and support services colleagues have worked tirelessly to ensure the ward is clean and set up ready to operate. Thanks to everyone and well done. 6

Bike Bus Visiting Stafford for Work Out at Work Day Another innovative exercise opportunity is available to staff in and around Stafford to mark Work Out at Work Day on Friday 6 June. In addition to this, there will be a led ride from Greyfriars Therapy Centre where the smoothie bike will also be available for staff to cycle while they blend a healthy refreshing smoothie! Cath Jenkinson, Staffordshire County Council Connectivity Officer (Cycling) has kindly agreed to work with the Partnership Trust on Work Out at Work Day and will be following this up with some visits later on in the year. On Friday 6 June the Bike Bus will be at: Rising Brook Health Centre from 7.30am until am and at Greyfriars Therapy Centre from 11.00am until 2.00pm For more information about the Bike Bus please see: staffordshire.gov.uk/transport/stafford/cycling/the-bike-bus.aspx The Bike Bus is is a mobile bike hub staffed by a qualified, experienced and enthusiastic team of cyclists to offer the following services: Dr Bike check ups specific for your bike Local cycle route information to support and promote cycling Confidence and commuter training for adults Try a bike NHS Get Young People into Work with The Prince s Trust Fifteen young people from Stoke-on-Trent have been given the opportunity to join the NHS workforce to build their skills and enhance their career opportunities in partnership between The Prince s Trust, the Partnership Trust and University Hospital of North Staffordshire. The Get into Health and Social Care Programme is a four week course providing work ready young people aged 16 and 25 years with vocational skills, giving them the opportunity to meet potential employers and find jobs in the health and social care sector. Participants then spend two weeks in the workplace across the Partnership Trust and UHNS gaining practical experience. Joanne Hancock, organisational development facilitator at the Partnership Trust said: The Prince s Trust s initiative helps participants to improve their chances of getting a job with employability skills but also focuses on the clinical skills which are required in caring roles in local NHS Trusts. Callum Cumming, 21 from Stoke, took part in the programme in April 2013 on a work placement in the organisational development team and was offered a full time apprenticeship position in August Speaking about how the programme helped him get into work, Callum said: Without the programme I wouldn t have been given the opportunity to build my skills or confidence. None of this would have been possible without The Prince s Trust. 7

Thank You Kelly Walker, Social Care Assessor for Community Intervention Service Community Hospital Team has been sent a very kind thank you by a relative relating to her mother s stay on Saddler Ward, Leek Moorlands Hospital. I would like to say how grateful my brother and I are with Kelly Walker s handling of our mother s care package and the way in which she has explained the step by step care mum will receive when she is discharged next week. Kelly has answered clearly our many questions with understanding, respect, dignity and professionalism, and made herself available to answer any concerns we might have. She exudes a very caring persona and is obviously in the right job and who, I m sure is a very valued member of your team. Staff at Brighton House, the Trust s reablement home in Newcastle under-lyme, have received a lovely letter of thanks and appreciation from a local person who recently stayed there. I wish to commend staff at Brighton House; the patience, kindness and care shown by the entire staff was exemplary. Nothing was too much trouble, the atmosphere was warm and friendly, the building clean and attractive with no trace of the all too typical care home smell so often present in these places. In addition, the food was excellent. I can t speak highly enough of the entire team. children s physio Angela (unfortunately no surname was supplied). Hi Angela, it was amazing to see my daughter in the chair. Her face was a picture. It looked so comfortable and appropriate. Thank you so much for pushing this forwards. It made my day. Hello Angela.
