We will still deliver the same high quality services and strive to work hard to provide the best and safest care and support to the people who we serve. You will however, notice the establishment of new Managing Directors (MDs), who will be a key link for operational members of staff. There are a total of five MDs working across Children and Families, Specialist, Shropshire, North and South. MDs will be out and about over the coming weeks and months so please meet with them and learn more about the aims and aspirations which they have for the area which you work within. Ensuring that you feel like MPFT is the organisation which you belong to is really important to the Trust Board and I. Therefore all staff will soon receive new MPFT lanyards and ID badges and new addresses, which will come into affect from this afternoon and over the weekend. Please wear your lanyards and ID badges with pride as we begin our new journey to make life better for our local communities. As MPFT launches SSOTP and SSSFT cease and I appreciate that this brings change and adjustment for many people. I am aware that The Word has been a source of good news and information for staff throughout the existence of SSOTP so I hope that you enjoy the last edition, which is packed with good news from across the organisation. MPFT will continue to produce a staff newsletter so please continue to contact the communications team to share your stories as we become a new organisation. Finally, thank you for your support and determination to make SSOTP a Trust which is caring and compassionate; a legacy which each and every one of you should be proud of. The future is bright and I am delighted to welcome you all to MPFT. Neil Neil Carr Chief Executive 2
A Thank you Message from the Chairman As we move into the final phase of the creation of the new Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust now is an opportunity for me to give thanks and reflection. As my term as chair draws to a close I would like to begin by sincerely thanking each and every one of you for your tireless commitment to patients and the support given to our local communities. It has been a tremendous privilege to chair the Trust and represent you over the past two and a half years. It has also been humbling to hear the stories presented at our board meetings and other forums where patients and their carers have given first hand testimony regarding the difference you have made to their lives. A large organisation can only do this with the dedicated co-ordination between all of our teams whether clinical, social care, corporate or support services. One of the reasons I joined the Trust six years ago was the strength of the integration between health and social care; I believe passionately in the concept of integrated care and the benefits it can bring to the people which we serve. I am pleased that through our legacy as a Trust this will be further strengthened by the creation of the new organisation. acute sector and new emerging primary care services; the creation of the new Trust sees the culmination of the board s strategic direction. It was timely and very rewarding to receive such positive feedback from the CQC following their recent visit to the Trust, although we are awaiting the final report it was obvious that tremendous work has been undertaken to strengthen the quality of services. I wish to record my thanks to all involved but particularly Rose Goodwin and her team who co-ordinated our improvement plan. I also recognise that these improvements and the day to day care of our clients and patients has been delivered at a time of unprecedented change. I would like to thank you all for your professionalism and support during this period. I would like to record my thanks to my fellow board members for their support, challenge and wise council which has made the job of chairing the organisation easier and ensured a strong focus on people and securing the future for integrated services. Finally I want to wish you and the new Board of Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust all the very best for the future. Our Board has been committed to supporting the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) and our vision and strategy is to see the integration of services progress to include Mental Health services as this will enable seamless care co-ordination and support to the David David Pearson Chairman 3
Heroic Rebecca shows practice makes perfect as she saves man from choking A Public Health Advisor with the Our Health 5-19 team, whose role involves teaching CPR to schoolchildren, put her skills into practice while out for a family meal by saving a man from choking. Rebecca Platt, based at Meir Primary Care Centre, was out for a meal with her family at The New Florence pub in Lightwood on Friday 30th March, when she came to the rescue after a fellow diner began choking on a piece of meat. The 30-year-old Public Health Advisor leapt into action when she came across the man who was on the floor and in cardiac arrest, and put her resuscitation training to the test. She told The Word: I was in the play area part of the pub with the children and my phone rang and it was my brother s girlfriend who was in the bar area. All she said was do you do first aid and I just said yes and she said I need you quick. I went through to be faced with this chap on the floor who d had a cardiac arrest his colouring was shocking, he was gasping and foaming at the mouth. He was in a bad way. A member of the bar staff was trying to do CPR but I took over. I found out he d choked on a piece of meat so started CPR and after about four sets of compressions and breaths he did appear to start breathing, so I put him in the recovery position and gave him some back thrusts, and then he went again, so I continued with the CPR. A few minutes later the paramedics arrived, so I continued doing compressions while they set up the defibrillator around me. He started breathing after my second lot of compressions. The obstruction was low down inside the man and the paramedics were initially unable to get it out. An air ambulance then arrived and eventually the medics managed to remove the blockage and take the patient to Royal Stoke Hospital. Rebecca was contacted later in the day by the police to be told the man was doing well, awake and talking, and was thankful for Rebecca s swift actions. The 39-year-old man, who had been dining at the pub with his young daughter when the incident happened, was discharged from hospital the next day with no lasting damage and the paramedics told Rebecca if she had not have been there it could have been a very different story. It doesn t seem real if I m honest, Rebecca said. I don t feel like a big hero I just wanted to give him a good chance. I talk a lot about it in my job as part of my role is teaching CPR in schools across Stoke. We do a practical session with the kids, so they have a chance to do it themselves. If they can just learn the basics from it, at least you re giving someone a chance. I ve been first aid trained for over nine years but this is the first time it s ever been put to use in a real-life situation. I knew how to do it but I didn t know how I d react in the situation but I just got on with it. When I saw him initially I thought that s it I can t see him coming back from this as he looked terrible. So I m just so grateful he came through it and can spend his life with his daughter and enjoy it. 4
Service Showcase Brighton House This month we showcase the service at Brighton House, a short stay nursing and rehabilitation facility opened by the Trust in December 2017 to support demand on capacity in the local health and social care system. The 25 bed unit is managed by Carol Lawton with deputy manager Sophie Snape, who took The Word on a tour of the facility and spoke about what the service offers and how the first six months have been for the team. Sophie said: One of the things we focus on is 24/7 rehabilitation and setting goals for the patients which are followed by all members of the team around the clock. Patients can come from community beds or from the acute Trust and sometimes that can be emergency patients who need care before being discharged home but don t need to be an inpatient in the acute hospital, releasing some much-needed capacity there. We also have a GP based on site and have a weekly Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting where we set the estimated date of discharge for the patients and discuss therapy plans. We have had some fantastic rehab results with our patients and we have had some excellent feedback from our patients which we have been really delighted to hear. Brighton House offers a range of facilities for patients to aid in their rehabilitation and make it feel more homely than the typical hospital ward. Sophie added: We have a family room where we can have meetings with patient s families and rehab areas, including a small flight of stairs and a room with kitchen appliances where we can work with patients to identify if they are fully independent or require rehab or care support at home. On top of that we have a day room with comfy chairs and a television and a lovely outdoor area which we hope to make good use of in the summer months. Dining area Day room Rehab room 5
Service Showcase Brighton House What the staff think I have worked here since December and have found it to be a brilliant team it has been a real team effort from day one and you can see the difference in the patients. It s fantastic. Anna Walley, Domestic Team I came from another trust in January and can honestly say I ve loved every minute. We have a fantastic manager in Carol and the staff are all really hard working and caring, from the domestics to the therapists. The support everyone provides is amazing and we all help each other out. I ve really enjoyed working here. What the patients think (Feedback from User and Carer Experience Surveys) Pat Jackson, Healthcare Support Worker Everybody was supportive and kind. Nothing was too much trouble and all the staff encouraged me to achieve things I didn t think I could do and I did it I feel great! I had the best Christmas in many, many years and it made me feel special. You changed my life and gave it back to me. Patient, Philip Excellent I would recommend to everyone, from the nursing staff to the tea lady, nothing was too much trouble for them. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and the management is excellent. Patient, George Ranjith, Physiotherapist The Team MDT meeting 6
STAFF SURVEY Building the right organisational culture for Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) is going to be vital to make it a success. With this in mind, we want to provide staff with the right level of engagement, transparency and opportunity to shape our organisation. Most importantly, in response to the National Staff Survey across both organisations, we want to ensure our focus is on empowering frontline staff, and responding to feedback. To enable this to happen, we need to understand how things feel right now, ensuring that there is effective communication between senior management and staff, in the right language. We want staff to feel listened to, at all levels, and evidence that feedback is taken seriously within MPFT and that it is acted upon. As a first step, from Monday 18 June 2018 through to Friday 6 July 2018, colleagues across MPFT will be encouraged to take part in the Pulse Check. The Pulse Check is a 15 question survey that will take around two minutes to complete, questions of which will let you give your feedback on how you feel about working here. Responses are completely anonymous, and you can complete the survey online, on a paper copy or by scanning the QR code. The Pulse Check will provide an honest and detailed view of how safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led every speciality is from your point of view. At the same time, a Leadership Audit will be sent around to leaders identified. These two surveys will be available from the 18 June so please watch out for communications in many forms during the build up to this. The Pulse Check will also allow you to share up to three ideas of your own that could improve patient care or make life easier for staff in your area but please be specific and also realistic, we would love to double staffing levels and parking however, we do need to think differently, so what s achievable be creative with suggestions! As the Pulse Check and Leadership Audits begin to come to a close, a series of Conversations will commence, venues are at present being scoped but dates will be available from the 6 July to 19 July 2018 across multiple locations within MPFT. Communications will be sent around detailing this in the coming weeks, so again, as above, look out for these! These conversations will enable staff to remove blockages, think differently, creatively and honestly shaping improvement together. It s vital that as many staff as possible respond to the survey and also attend a Conversation so please don t hesitate have your say in a no risk way and shape MPFT as frontline staff. Colleagues may start to hear LiA (Listening into Action) attached to the pulse check, which is a successfully embedded method of staff engagement within SSSFT, putting staff at the centre of improvement. The Pulse Check supports and provides a measure of the success of this engagement. Lots of interesting, creative and innovative communications will come out to staff across MPFT, from June, which will explain more in stages, around what this will bring; all in response to staff feedback so please look out for this. If you have any questions or would like to find out more please contact the OD Team - Kelly Woods on or Kelly.woods@sssft.nhs.uk or Lisa Whitehouse lisa.whitehouse@sssft.nhs.uk 7
The Standard of your Records Reflects the Quality of your Care Record keeping is an integral part of health and social care practice and a legal requirement. Good record keeping is fundamental to providing high quality care. All staff have a responsibility to adhere to The Care Record Keeping Policy as well as following professional bodies standards. Why keep records? There are many reasons for keeping records in health and social care, but two stand out: to compile a complete record of the service user s journey through services to enable continuity of care for the service user both within and between services What do good records look like? The records we keep in healthcare need to be clear, accurate, honest and timely (meaning they should be written as near as possible to the actual time of occurrence of the events they describe). Different means of record-keeping are used in health care settings. Some workplaces use hand-written records, others have moved to computer-based systems, and many use a combination of both. The principles of legible, attributable and timely record keeping apply to electronic and paper records. Completing the quarterly record keeping audit is a good way of refreshing the principles of good record keeping. Are your records personalised? Record keeping should form an integral part of the care you deliver, articulating the service user s journey for all who need to see. If someone else was to look at your records, ask yourself what they would need to know about the service user? Do your records tell the story of the service user s journey? Useful Links It is good practice to discuss record keeping at supervision and team meetings to promote good standards of practice. The Care Record Keeping Policy was reviewed and ratified in January 2018 The top tips for record keeping remind staff that record keeping is an integral part of the care we provide The On the Record campaign articles produced by the Care Records group form a valuable resource for teams Remember: Care record keeping training is available on ESR for all staff and is essential for new starters. 8
Staff Profile Sheron Wilkinson, Advanced Nurse Practitioner To celebrate International Nurses Day 2018 on 12 May, the Trust asked members of staff from the various nursing roles in the organisation to tell us more about what they do, why they love doing it and what they are most proud of. These profiles have been shared with the general public on the Trust s website and also via social media. To view the profiles, please click here. One of those profiled was Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Sheron Wilikinson, who we focus on this month. My nursing career is now in its 33rd year and I can reflect on my progression from a shy pupil nurse to qualifying as an Enrolled Nurse. I completed my conversion course to become a Staff Nurse whilst having my family and from there became a Senior Staff Nurse on a busy orthopaedic ward. I moved into the Community Rehabilitation Team where I promoted to Ward Sister on a rehabilitation ward in a community hospital, and from there to the Matron role which I held for complex discharges. I now work as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner within the Home First Team. First and foremost what I love most about this role is the patient contact and interaction I have every single day. As part of the Home First Team our priority as Advanced Nurse Practitioners is to work with the care homes within our geographical area, review and treat patients where appropriate inside the care homes and to avoid, if possible, an admission into hospital. Most of the patients I see have a level of dementia so our priority is to treat them in the place they are most familiar with. As nurses we understand that for those with any form of mental health problem it can be very detrimental to remove them from their normal place of residence. I find my role most rewarding when I have been able to see, treat, and re-assure patients, staff and relatives alike, enabling them to remain in the care home where they feel at home and safe. After 33 years, I am most proud of the fact that I remain a dedicated and passionate nurse, and always aspire to do my very best for my patients. International Nurses Day was celebrated by teams across the Trust. Among those marking the occasion was Jackfield Ward at Haywood Hospital, pictured here with their Nurses Day display. 9
Trust Representatives Attend Ceremony to Celebrate the Life of Florence Nightingale Rose Goodwin, Director of Nursing and Quality, with representatives of nursing staff from the Partnership Trust travelled to London on Wednesday 9th May to commemorate the life of Florence Nightingale at an annual service at Westminster Abbey. HRH Princess Alexandra, the Honourable Lady Ogilvy, was in attendance and although walking ceremoniously down the aisle, managed to chat to various nurses both towards the altar and on returning back up the aisle at the end of the ceremony. The service was conducted by the Dean of Westminster and included the procession with The Florence Nightingale Lamp which was carried through the Abbey by Joanna Poole, Florence Nightingale Foundation Scholar, and escorted by student nurses and midwives from the University of Plymouth. Our nurses said it was fabulous to be part of the pomp and ceremony which is usually seen from afar. Nursing was represented from across the United Kingdom, NHS, Armed Forces, the Commonwealth and the private sector. On leaving the Abbey, the bells were ringing in celebration which rounded the day off fabulously. Rose said: It was a special service for me as I have attended the service with a group of nurses since the formation of SSOTP, so it was very special to be able to attend with a larger group. Rose thanked all those who were able to attend, and everyone who made their attendance possible. 10
Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy staff, along with their nursing colleagues on Sneyd Ward, the specialist Stroke rehabilitation unit at the Haywood Hospital, are embracing a national initiative supported by OT Professional Lead Faye Pryce. NHS Improvement are promoting a national 70 day challenge to #EndPjParalysis. The aim is to achieve a total of 1 million patient days of people being up, dressed and moving in their own clothes rather than hospital gowns or pyjamas. The challenge is running from 17th April 26th June 2018, to finish in time for the NHS 70th anniversary celebrations on 5th July. Data is being gathered via an app each day and members of staff have been asked to answer how many patients are dressed in day clothes at midday and how many more have mobilised to the toilet/ shower/walked around the bed. A publically accessible dashboard has been created to show the bed day total, percentage bed days and comparisons between specialities. On Sneyd Ward, Lydia Shaw Occupational Therapy Assistant, has spoken with patients about their feelings on getting up and getting dressed and has designed a display in the dayroom incorporating their feedback. Patients have reported physical and psychological benefits of being dressed and moving about. Advanced Occupational Therapist, Laura Baggaley, has emphasised the inter-disciplinary ethos of the Ward where there is an immediate focus on collaborative working from day one of admission. The majority of the therapy team start their day on the early shift with their nursing colleagues to incorporate bed mobility, bed exercises, transfers, mobility, personal care and cognitive aspects of recovery into the functional task of getting up and getting ready for the day. 11
User/Carer Experience In April 2018 the Partnership Trust received 2,491 Service User and Carer Experience surveys and comment cards for real time reporting about their experience of the treatment and care they received. There is a great deal of hard work involved from all staff to ensure we can collect this feedback. The Experience Team would like to recognise the teams from April s award scheme. GOLD is awarded to Meir ILCT District Nursing For the completion of their monthly target sample of Service User and Carer experience surveys Achieving a Friends and Family Test score of 100% of respondents who would recommend the service SILVER is awarded to Seisdon South District Nursing For the completion of their monthly target sample of Service User and Carer experience surveys Achieving a Friends and Family Test score of 100% of respondents who would recommend the service BRONZE is awarded to Newcastle North Social Care For the completion of their monthly target sample of Service User and Carer experience surveys Achieving a Friends and Family Test score of 100% of respondents who would recommend the service Congratulations to each of the teams. 13 6Cs Challenge Award Stone Rehabilitation Team Congratulations to members of the Stone Rehabilitation Team, who have successfully completed the 6Cs Challenge Award recently. The team were presented with their certificate of achievement by Non Executive Director Elizabeth Jarrett along with the Professional Lead for Physiotherapy Panos Sarigiovannis, who commented that the team s application clearly demonstrated that they deliver high quality and fully integrated care. Campaign Launched The #LegsMatter campaign was launched at the Tissue Viability Society Conference in April. Every day, thousands of people s quality of life is devastated by the lack of support and advice on the prevention of lower leg and foot conditions and the failure to correctly diagnose and treat them. The Legs Matter campaign is determined to change this and the Trust s Tissue Viability Team fully welcome and support the campaign. The team plan to work locally with teams, service users and the public to improve awareness, understanding and treatment of lower leg and foot conditions. The campaign is calling on all health professionals to: Recognise the signs of symptoms of lower leg and foot problems Talk to patients about their lower leg and foot health Ask for additional training if you need it For more information and top tips visit the Legs Matter website 13
Thank You Cannock s Adult Social Care Safeguarding team received thanks from the manager of Marlyn House for the support given to a resident in the last month of her life. The team provided her with outstanding care. She could be noncompliant with care, very difficult to manage most of the time and along with family dynamics to contend with, the staff coped extremely well and provided her with the care she needed until she passed away." has been amazing and they should be extremely proud of having you with them. Love from the family. The District Nursing Service in Newcastle received a compliment form the husband of a patient who called to thank the whole team for looking after his wife's leg ulcer. He stated that he cannot fault the care she has received. The Occupational Therapy East team received thanks from a service user: Thank you so much for everything you have done for me. My life has been made a lot easier and I feel a bit more self-sufficient. Please accept my gratitude." The Home First Care and Support Service in the Moorlands received praise from a service user s brother, Mr S, who called the team to convey his thanks to all of the staff, in particular to the lady who completed the 7am call. Mr S stated that he appreciated all that they did for his sister and spoke of the team s professionalism and the care that was shown. The Community Intervention Service in South Staffs received positive comments from a service user: All of the nurses have been excellent, especially the Seisdon team who treated me at home. The Matrons based in Codsall, Perton and Bilbrook Integrated Local Care Team received thanks from the daughter of a service user: "My mum would not be here if it wasn't for everything you have all done and continue to do. The care is fantastic." The Chatterley Ward at Haywood Hospital received a number of compliments this month, including thanks from a recent patient: Would you please pass on my grateful thanks to all your staff, not only for what they did for me but also how they did it, with smiling faces, which made a big difference to my stay. Thank you again. A member of the Falls Service based in Stafford received a card that reads: "Just a little token of our appreciation for everything you have arranged for dad. Everything you have said you would do has been done so promptly. Your team ESP, a member of the Rheumatology MSK service at Haywood Hospital received a compliment from a patient s daughter: You were wonderful in clinic. Cheerful, with a positive attitude and a great way of explaining things clearly. She also stated that ESP gave her Mum dignity; as she is in her 90s people do not take the time to listen to her, as she can be slow to find her words or they speak too quickly so she does not hear what has been said, but ESP was calm and took the time to speak directly to her. He listened to what she had to say without interrupting her and without her feeling pressured she was taking too long. ESP explained everything slowly and clearly ensuring her Mum had understood what was said. She went as far as to say, that if she could have bottled him, she would have taken him home! The Trust received an from a service user s parent regarding his excellent experience when taking his little boy for assessment by the Speech and Language Therapy Team in Stafford: "We were incredibly impressed by the level of professionalism and expert advice we received. The therapist at Stafford Clinic had clearly reviewed his case in detail prior to the appointment. She tailored her approach to get the best out of our son and made him feel at ease for what could have been a very scary experience for him. The staff member equally took the time to speak with us and answered all our questions very comprehensively around the way forward. A truly great service and an individual who is a credit to the Trust." Staff can now log their own compliments on the Safeguard database. Please click here for a guide on entering compliments from patients/service users. When forwarding compliments please ensure specific details of the message are included so that all messages can be passed on, and credit can be given, to the correct teams.
